On Sunday December 2, 2012,the descendants of Florien andAnnaise Sanchez Bourgeoisheld a family reunion at the St.Amant Park. They were married in 1923 and becamethe parents of seven children.

her death she still had twoteenagers living at home. Thetwo boys moved in with theirsisters and their husbands;Bernard with Helen, and Raoulwith Agnes until their subsequent marriages. Theirdescendents are numerous andmake up one of the largest fam-ilies in Ascension Parish.

The family members enjoyed a

fun-filled day with over 300 relatives attending the event.Former World ChampionJambalaya Cook, Joey Cornettand his father, Peanut providedthe meal. One of the character-istics of the family is that theyare blessed with musical talent. The crowd was entertained by ahost of musicians representingseveral local bands and many ofthe younger generation who are

proving to have inherited the music genes from theirancestors.

Annaise’s sister, Audrey SanchezWatts was a special guest and atreat for everyone. She is theonly surviving sibling ofAnnaise. That means that thereare six generations of the familyin existence. This is a rare situation indeed.

The reunion committee members Earl “Peanut”Cornett, Sue Bourgeois, Randyand Paula Bourgeois, ArleneBrignac, Cecilia Lambert, BarryBourgeois, Gail Lavigne,Beverly Lambert and JaniceTullier are asking all familymembers to mark Sunday,December 1, 2013 on their calendars for the next reunion.

PrenatalChiropractor & MassageTherapist Joins SmithChiropractic"40 years ago I would never haveeven considered going to a chiropractor. Simply put, I was askeptic!" admits Dr. Smith.

"As a child and teenager my lifegoal was to be an orthopedic surgeon. In high school I suffered

a football injury to my lower backwhich eventually caused me to suffer from severe bladder infections which did not improvewith conventional medical care. Asa last resort, after years of suffering,I gave chiropractic a try and forthe first time I started to get better. This altered my goals andtransformed my life so that Ibecame a chiropractor."

Dr. Smith is a wellness expert andsought after speaker (especially onnutrition and staying young as youage), and a strong promoter ofnatural health care for people of allages. He is an accomplished pilot, active member of Civil Air Patrol, enjoys playing golf, fishing, exercising and believes in a healthydiet and positive mental attitudefor optimal health.

Dr. Raquel Parker is a highlytrained prenatal chiropractor. She is certified in the WebsterTechnique. The WebsterTechnique is a specific chiropracticanalysis and diversified adjustment. The goal of the adjustment is toreduce the effects of sacral andpelvic dysfunction during pregnancy.

The adjustment restores neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis.

Common symptoms treated during pregnancy include (but are not limited to) low back pain, sciatic neuralgia, and symptomsassociated with sacral subluxationand/ or SacroIliac joint dysfunction.

Stevie Baez is a licensed massagetherapist certified in prenatal massage. Licensed therapists havereceived training beyond thenational standards for massagetherapists, and know how toaddress specific pregnancy needsand sensitive areas of the body.Stevie has been practicing prenatalmassage for more than 5 years. She has worked with many womenover the years seeing themthrough each trimester of theirpregnancy and even assisted somethrough labor for natural child-birth using massage, breathing andrelaxation techniques.

Prenatal massage is therapeuticbodywork that focuses on the special needs of the mother-to-beas her body goes through the

dramatic changes of pregnancy. Itenhances the function of musclesand joints, improves circulationand general body tone, andrelieves mental and physicalfatigue. The gentle, noninvasiveapproach of prenatal massage canease discomfort associated withpregnancy, help the mother-to-be

prepare for labor and give her nurturing emotional support.

Many women have experiencedsignificant reduction in sciaticnerve pain during pregnancythrough regular chiropractic careand massage. Studies indicate thatmassage therapy performed duringpregnancy can reduce stress andanxiety, relieve muscle aches andjoint pains, increases circulation, and improve labor outcomes andnewborn health.

Scalp Hype? The latest push in the beautyindustry is all about creating ahealthy scalp for thick, lustroushair. I thought my scalphealth was fine, since I didn’thave dandruff. I guess that’snot true. It makes sense thatafter using all the sprays, serums, conditioners and othermiscellaneous hair products myscalp would be a plugged up mess.

I’ve tried everything under thesun to make my hair look andfeel thicker. I’ve even had hairtracks, weaves, extensions andof course those trusty clip inextensions. So, I thought theremight be something to this

healthy scalp movement, so Idecided to check it out. The Invati (Invati means invigorate) hair thickening system claims to give the userthicker, healthier hair through a revitalizing botanical system. This system by Aveda includesan exfoliating shampoo, thickening conditioner and thescalp revitalizer. They say thesystem has been shown toreduce hair thinning by 33%.The entire three piece systemruns about $108.

The Invati shampoo cleansesthe hair. It uses salicylic acid toremove buildup of sebum andproduct residue that can clogpores preventing hair health. Italso has moisturizing elementsthat helps your hair and scalp

maintain a moisture balance. The conditioner uses soy protein to increase the elasticityand strengthen the hair grapeseed derivative to help thicken hair.

The scalp revitalizer, made with turmeric, increases circulation of the scalp, energizing hair growth.

The system smells great as allthe AVEDA products do, butthe only downfall is you have touse the scalp revitalizer twice aday. You can feel the revitalizerworking. It makes your scalptingle and it feels really good.

Of course I haven’t seen atremendous change in my hairyet, but most people using the

entire system for a while haveclaimed less hair loss, lessbreakage, more volume, greaterfullness and bounce.

Don’t want to splurge on theInvati system, Clear Scalp andHair Therapy, is a new lineavailable at Wal-Mart and localdrug stores and those productsaverage about $5 each.

I think the key to scalp health iscirculation, so Here are a fewgood pointers for a nice scalpmassage, which will increase circulation and stimulation ofthe scalp.

• Try to use an invigoratingessential oil in eucalyptus or mint• Apply moderate pressure• Start at the front of the head and move to the back of the neck • Rotate your fingers on thescalp in small circular motions• Run your fingers throughyour hair and scratch the scalp

If thinning hair is somethingyou’re self-conscious about, goby your local AVEDA salon andrequest a free sample of theInvati system. It can’t hurt. What do you have to lose, except less hair?

ACVI think the first time I purchased apple cider vinegar(ACV) I was told that I could

Page 13: ASC APRIL DOCUMENT 07 - Ascension Magazine...invigorate) hair thickening system claims to give the user thicker, healthier hair through a revitalizing botanical system. This system

drink it after a meal that washigh in sugar to help decreasethe glycemic impact. Ok, somaybe I can have that extracookie this Christmasseason…just kidding.

Since my initial purchase ofapple cider vinegar, I’ve doneresearch on apple cider vinegarand it’s benefits. Now, youcan’t just buy regular ole’ vinegar. You’ve got to boy (Iprefer organic) raw apple cidervinegar. Clear, regular vinegarhas NONE of the benefits ofraw vinegar. Raw vinegar has a“mother” in it. The “mother”is living nutrients and goodbacteria for your body. Youactually see the mother in thebottom of the bottle when youpurchase it.

According to Paul C. Bragg, the Father of the health move-ment in America, some benefitsof apple cider vinegar are: itdetoxifies the body (some evensay it clears up acne!), cleansesthe scalp and hair shaft leavingyou with healthy, shiny hair, aids in digestion, it restoresyour body to its proper PHbalance (processed and pack-aged foods are often very acidic

which leads to disease), fightsoff viruses and bacteria, andeven helps reduce the glycemicimpact of high calorie or highstarch meals.

I try to drink one 10 oz. glassof water with one to two tea-spoons of ACV at least twice aday. If I have to have some-thing sweet, I try to follow itup with another glass of ACVtreated water, to lower theglycemic impact.

At first the taste was a littleshocking, but after a while, Icame to love it. If you likelemon water, this is an easyswitch. Give it a shot.

We AllHave aVoice.I recently went on an outreachin for the homeless in northBaton Rouge, and I came backhome a changed woman.Weeks leading up to the outreach , as we gathered extraclothing, and purchased extrafood, I couldn’t help but con-

tinually think about the peoplewe would help.

I was afraid of the way I wouldfeel when I saw them, butwhen we arrived, we saw people that were grateful.Everyone was grateful for thebasics, like clothing and food, but most importantly a listening heart.

I had several homeless encour-age me. Several people hadkicked a bad drug habit coldturkey and said it was only bythe grace of God. That’sinspiring to me. Those same

people are now looking forwork. I can’t imagine thecourage that must take.

One girl, about my age, losther job two years ago. She hasno family here, and had noother option. I sat there withher crying in my arms. I trulydidn’t want to leave.

When it was time to go, theyasked when we’d be back.“We’ll be back in a month,”our group said. That justwon’t be soon enough.

New Years resolution to

get out of pain,Trigger PointDry Needlingmay be rightfor you

TRIGGER POINT DRYNEEDLING (TDN) is a treatment technique offered byChase Roy, DPT that utilizesthin, solid filament needles todeactivate and desensitize trigger points in muscles.Knots in muscles (myofascialtrigger points) can cause pain, decreased flexibility anddecreased muscle function. Dry needling performed by acertified physical therapist is aneffective method of releasingthese trigger points, especiallywhen other manual soft tissuetechniques have failed.

HOW DOES TRIGGERPOINT DRY NEEDLINGWORK?

TDN is a treatment for muscular tightness and spasm, which commonly followsinjuries and often accompaniesthe degenerative process.Small, thin needles are insertedin the muscles at the triggerpoints causing the pain. Whena needle tip hits a trigger point,a “local twitch” in the muscle is noted by the therapist andthe patient. Dry needling stimulates certain neurologicalsensors in the body, whichmodulate pain signals. Once thetwitch response is elicited, itmay mechanically disrupt thecontracted nature of the triggerpoint, which in turn, promotespositive local biochemicalchanges and results in increasedblood flow to the area.

WHAT TYPE OF PROBLEMSCAN BE TREATED BY TDN?

Muscle dysfunction can be the primary or secondary contributing factor to manyconditions. Some conditionsthat have been effectively treated by using the DRYNEEDLING treatment include:

• Repetitive stress injuries

IS THE PROCEDUREPAINFUL?

Most people do not feel theinsertion of the needle. Thelocal twitch response may cause a very brief cramping orreproduce symptoms directly inthe muscle being treated. Thisis a good and desirable reactionbecause it confirms a possiblesource of dysfunction.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKEFOR THIS PROCEDURE TOWORK?

In some cases, decreased painand improved function areimmediate. Usually, it may takea few treatment sessions for alasting positive effect.

WILL TDN BE AN OPTIONTO HELP YOUR INJURY ORCONDITION?

If you have had problems with acondition that TDN may help, please feel free to contact ouroffice for a consultation orinform your physician about thistreatment option. Incorporatingthe treatment technique withother manual and rehabilitativemethods is proving to be veryeffective in treating variousinjuries and conditions.

As the new year approaches, you may be considering making some home improvements. Ask yourself if you need a pro. If theanswer is yea or maybe, hereare 9 rules to guide youthrough your search.Remember, not all contractorsare created equal and it isimportant that you find theright one for the job orimprovements you are considering.

1. ASK AROUND - Thebest references usually comefrom family, friends, colleaguesand building professionals youtrust. Ask the contractor forproof of liability insurance, worker's compensation andprofessional license.

2. INTERVIEWPROSPECTS - Once youhave your list of contractors inhand, give each one of quickcall and ask the followingquestions:

A. Are they taking on projects of your size?B. Will they provide a list of clients and their contactinformation?C. How many other projectswould they be working on atthe same time as yours?d. How long have they beendoing this type work?

3. MEET THE CONTRACTORS - Basedon recommendations andphone interviews pick yourtop three or four to meet inperson. Verify references withconsumer protection agencyand Better Business Bureau tomake sure the contractors are in good standing withtheir clients..

4. ASSESS THE FACTS -Once you've narrowed yourlist, put all our research to use.Contact former clients to learnhow their projects turned out.If possible, visit a current job

site for a first-hand look athow the contractor works.

5. MAKE PLANS AND GET BIDS - Conscientiouscontractors may ask for theclient's expectations for theproject including a budget.Compare bids by asking eachprospect to break down thecost of material and labor if itis a large job or the cost ofeach item if it's a small job. Inmost cases, about 40 percentof the total cost is material.

6. SET A PAYMENTSCHEDULE - A paymentschedule is a good way to addincentive markers to gettingyour project done on time. A reputable contractor typically asks for 10 percent toget started on a large projectand three 25 percent paymentsspaced evenly over the duration of the project. Thefinal 15 percent is paid oncethe work has been completedto your satisfaction. When asmaller job is done, it is common for the contractor to ask for payment upon completion.

7. DON'T GO BY PRICEALONE - Most pros suggesteliminating the lowest bid, which can be an indicationthat the contractor is cuttingcorners or desperate for work.Even if the contractor meetsall technical requirements, trust your gut and go with theone you like best.

8. WATCH OUT FORCHANGE ORDERS - Anyvariation in agreed upon planshas big potential to increasethe price and the duration of the project. If plans have to be changed be sure to discuss this in detail with your contractor.

ENJOY YOUR TIME WITHFAMILY AND FRIENDS DURING THIS HOLIDAY SEASON. MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Diet and Oral HealthBy Calvin Bessonet, DDS,FAGD

Your body is like a complexmachine. The foods you choose asfuel and how often you “fill up”affect your general health and thatof your teeth and gums. Manydentists are concerned that theirpatients are consuming recordnumbers of sugar-filled sodas, sweetened fruit drinks, and non-nutritious snacks that affecttheir teeth. These items generallyhave little if any nutritional valueand over time they can take a tollon teeth.

Eating patterns and food choicesamong children and teens areimportant factors that affect howquickly youngsters may developtooth decay. When bacteria(plaque) come into contact withsugar in the mouth, acid is produced, which attacks the teethfor 20 minutes or more. This caneventually result in tooth decay.

Not sure you're getting thenutrients, vitamins and mineralsneeded by your body (and yourteeth and gums)? Check out theU.S. Department of Agriculture'sWeb site. The USDA oversees thenutritional health of the nation. The agency's dietary recommenda-tions are designed to promoteoptimal health and to prevent obesity-related diseases includingcardiovascular disease, Type 2

diabetes and cancers.The government's recommenda-

tions recognize that people havedifferent dietary needs at variousstages of life. They offer guidancefor children and adults based ontheir levels of physical activity.Your physician or a registereddietician can also provide suggestions for your daily food intake.

Foods that contain sugars of anykind can contribute to toothdecay. Almost all foods, includingmilk or vegetables, have some typeof sugar. However, they shouldn'tbe removed from our dietsbecause many of them containimportant nutrients. And they addpleasure to eating. To help controlthe amount of sugar you consume, read food labels and choose foodsand beverages that are low inadded sugars. Added sugars oftenare present in soft drinks, candy, cookies and pastries.

If your diet lacks certain nutrients, it may be more difficultfor tissues in your mouth to resistinfection. This may contribute toperiodontal (gum) disease, a majorcause of tooth loss in adults.Although poor nutrition does notcause periodontal disease directly, many researchers believe that thedisease progresses faster and couldbe more severe in people withnutrient-poor diets

What can you do?

• Maintain a healthy diet.• Make sure water is readily

available.• Limit the number of between-meal snacks. When you mustsnack, choose nutritious foods thatare low in sugar.• Brush thoroughly twice a daywith a fluoride toothpaste that hasthe American Dental Association'sSeal of Acceptance.• Floss or use another kind ofinterdental cleaner daily to removeplaque (a thin film of bacteria)from under the gums and between teeth.• Schedule regular dental visitsfor checkups and cleanings.• Keep a food diary for a week.Record every item you eat anddrink, including hard candies orchewing gum that contains sugar.Compare the diary to the foodPyramid recommendations.

How does the food youeat cause tooth decay?

When you eat, food passesthrough your mouth. Here itmeets the germs, or bacteria, thatlive in your mouth. You may haveheard your dentist talk aboutplaque. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria.

These bacteria love sugars foundin many foods. When you don'tclean your teeth after eating, plaque bacteria use the sugar toproduce acids that can destroy thehard surface of the tooth, calledenamel. After a while, tooth decayoccurs. The more often you eatand the longer foods are in your

mouth, the more damage occurs.

What are tips for betterdental health?

1. To get a balanced diet, eat avariety of foods. Choose foodsfrom each of the five major foodgroups:• breads, cereals and other

grain products• fruits• vegetables• meat, poultry and fish• milk, cheese and yogurt2. Limit the number of snacks thatyou eat. Each time you eat foodthat contains sugars, the teeth areattacked by acids for 20 minutesor more.3. If you do snack, choose nutritious foods, such as cheese, raw vegetables, plain yogurt, or apiece of fruit.4. Foods that are eaten as part of a meal cause less harm. Moresaliva is released during a meal, which helps wash foods from themouth and helps lessen the effects of acids.5. Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste that has theAmerican Dental Association Sealof Acceptance.6. Clean between your teeth dailywith floss or interdental cleaners.7. Visit your dentist regularly.Your dentist can help preventproblems from occurring andcatch those that do occur whilethey are easy to treat.

A New Alternativefor Long-TermCare-Granny PodsAccording to the National FamilyCaregiver’s Association, there areover 65 million Americans who aretaking care of an aging loved one. That statistic will continue to skyrocket as the older populationgrows. The costs can be staggeringand families are often faced with atough decision when it comes todeciding whether in-home care, assisted living or a nursing home isthe best alternative. Now there isanother option – granny pods.

While most people prefer to remainin their home with in-home care

provided by someone they know, often family or friends are unable tobe available 24 hours a day on anongoing basis. Additionally, if careis required 24 hours a day, the costcan be astronomical. Another disadvantage is that most homes arenot designed for health care servicesso it may not be practical to providethose services in the home.

Now there is another alternative, the“Granny Pod”. A granny pod is amini-home designed to be placed insomeone’s backyard. The dwellingsmay include a kitchen, bedroom, and handicapped accessible bath-rooms. The granny pod is connecteddirectly to the homeowner’s utilities. They can also be customized withfeatures like medical monitoringtechnology, air filters, and fall-prooffloors.

While the cost of a granny pod canbe expensive, the installation of onemay allow someone with a longterm care condition to remain outof a nursing facility by providing aplace where care can take place at alocation more convenient for thefamily. This may allow the family toprovide some of the care neededwhile hiring professional sitters during hours where they are work-ing or otherwise unable to care fortheir loved one. You can find outmore information on granny pods at

www.medcottage.com.

Regardless if care is provided in thesenior’s home, a granny pod, anassisted living facility, or a nursinghome, paying long-term care costscan easily deplete a family’sresources. Because of this, it isimportant to begin planning earlyfor the possibility you may one dayneed long term care. Long termcare is needed when you are nolonger able to perform activities ofdaily living.

Of course, for those who can affordit, paying out of their savings is anoption, but this is not usually thebest alternative. Another way to pay for long-term care costs isthrough insurance. Long-term careinsurance either reimburses you foryour long-term care costs or paysyou a monthly benefit if you areunable to perform at least 2 activi-ties of daily living due to physical orcognitive reasons. Most policies arelike other types of insurance. Youpay a monthly, quarterly or annualpremium and if you ever need care, the insurance it is available. Long-term care insurance may becombined with a life insurance policy or an annuity. Some preferthis type of plan as the insurance orannuity is still available if long-termcare is never needed.

For those who qualify, Medicaid orveteran’s benefits might be the solution to pay for long-term careexpenses. Both of these programsare based on income and asset limits. With proper planning,

however, many who think theywon’t qualify may be able to andstill preserve some of their assets tocare for themselves or their spouseor to leave to their loved ones upontheir death.

Long-term care planning can bevery confusing as it involves differ-ent government programs with different rules. Even long-term care insurance and reverse mortgages, although offered by private companies, are highly regulated by the government. Todetermine what type of plan is bestfor you and your family to addressthe need for future or current ong-term care expenses, you shouldseek the advice or professionalsfamiliar with these programs. Whilethere are professionals who may beable to help you with one of theseprograms or products, the best placeto start is usually with an elder lawattorney who is familiar with themany different options for fundinglong-term care and who is going toprovide you an unbiased opinionabout which of these options is bestfor your particular situation.

It didn't start off good forme. My camera man that wassupposed to film for my T.V.Show did not show up at 6:00a.m. He would not even returnmy call. I was really ticked offfrom the start. I finally decidedthat I would film the group ofrabbit hunters myself and leavemy gun behind. This was veryfrustrating because I was scheduled to work for the nextfive weeks without a day off and I really needed to produce a film.

It was 28 degrees when westarted with a strong east wind. The hunt got off to a ruggedstart with a missed shot and twoof the dogs running a herd offive Whitetails. In a shortamount of time we managed toget the beagle pack back together and the hunt continued. An east wind seemsto be the curse of death to mostdog hunters. Why? I don't thinkanybody knows. The day before, this same pack of dogs produced fourteen rabbits. Theowner of the dogs and the person that invited me on thehunt, T-Curt Rouyea, apolo-gized to me for the dogs'behavior that day. He needn'tdo so for I had been therebefore. After all I was having ablast, and I commented to himthat the hunters needed to dotheir part since by this time theyhad missed three or four morerabbits. After nearly getting run over by a doe deer and witnessing several more missedshots, the dogs really got linedout. During the next hour or sothe hunting party killed five rabbits. To me it was a greathunt and I managed to get agreat film for my outdoor show.

When it was all said and done, four of us were sitting at thecamp fire discussing jobs,

retirement, the future of hunting, old friends that havepassed away, past parties thatour teenagers have had at ourhouse and marriage problems inour lives. Believe me we all hada lot in common and it was avery interesting conversation.

It's a shame to say, but I don'tknow but a handful of truehunters these days. Most hunterswant to kill the biggest buck inthe world. It's crazy. The personthat invited me on this huntthat day is a true hunter. I love and respect those types of hunters, a person that understands what being awoodsman is all about. Eachyear after the deer season hasended, he takes off for a monthto rabbit hunt. For the pastthree years I have been trying toschedule vacation days to spendwith him at that time of year.Because of job obligations, Ihave not been able to do so. Allgood things come to an endand after a hug and a handshakeI was walking to my truck whenI heard him say, "Maybe nextyear we can get together" and Ireplied "All we gotta do is liveman". That in itself may be easier said than done.

Until next time,"Enjoy the moment"James "Goosie" Guice

Scene- A South Louisiana living room on Christmas Eve.

Characters- The Kids-all ages from 1-92

Uncle Bill- A disillusioned dream-er whose long repetitious storiesare a Christmas tradition. Butlately-because of acute brain celldepletion-his rambling accountshave become more confusing thana Les Miles “Give ‘em a big kiss- ifyou’re a girl” press conference.

Act 1Kids (excitedly)-Uncle Bill’s

here! Uncle Bill’s here! Cometell us one of your famousChristmas stories, Uncle Bill.

Bill- Ahoy, my little buoys andgulls. This year’s yarn is broughtto you by Barnacle Bill the Sailor-with a little help from CaptainMorgan and his “sugar canewhiskey”-a whale of a tale thatwould make Jonah jealous.

Kid 1- Is this one anything likethe one last year when Lester theJester helped vanquish Piyush ofthe Bayous to a watery grave?

Bill- Well, there is a black creature from a lagoon that is conquered by a band of heroes solet’s pile up under the mistletoejust in case some of those Sammy’sRein-Dears stop by. In fact, let’scall them by name-“On Ali andAsleigh and Bekah and Courtney,Now Kayla and Karlyn and Erikaand Julie…”

And maybe the taller ones likeHolly and Laressa can help put thelittle angels like Heather on thetop of the tree.

But in the meantime…”Just sitright back and you’ll hear a tale, Atale of a fateful fish, A poor, unlucky Drum he was, With a suicidal wish…”

This Sinbad saga begins a littlesouth of Houma in a fishing village called Dularge…

Kid 2- We learned a song aboutthat place in Sunday School-(singing) “Dularge, oh Dularge,oh do remember me…”

Bill- Uh, I think that was “DoLord” but there may have beenmore divine intervention in thisepic than when Charleton Hestonparted the Red Sea.

It was Sunday morning comingdown-the day after LSU hadsqueaked by Ole Miss-and most ofthe Master Mariners had risenbefore daybreak and headed out tosea-including the Social DirectorCatman who had finagled his way

onto the “A” boat of Captain Jim“Caribbean” Cruz and first mateFrench Fry Dennis.

Kid 3- Uncle-I mean-BarnacleBill, did everyone on this trip havea nickname?

Bill- We prefer “street names”and yes, everyone did, because theposse is getting closer all the time.

Even my shipmates, Skillet HeadLee and Maverick Martine, hadgiven me up for dead, leaving thelanding without me but taking mytrusty Zebco rod and reel withthem on the boat.

Kid 1- Zebco? Isn’t that thekind of tackle adults give little kidsto fish with?

Bill- Correct again, my littleangler. But it wouldn’t be fair forBarnacle Bill to have the bestequipment because no one elsewould catch any fish. So he has tobe handicapped in some way-sortof like the Handicap races at theFair Grounds.

Anyway, hungover and rodless, Iheaded for the canal across from

the camp to rid myself of some ofthe previous day’s poison when Ispotted Don-Boy, a.k.a. theMasked Marauder, staring pensive-ly across the briny.

Kid 2- Why was he called theMasked Marauder?

Bill- Because fearing he mightactually be forced to ride in a boatin the early morning chill, Donhad wisely brought a camouflagemask that protected his face andhis philosophic brain.

Without a hint of a good morning greeting, he turned andfacing me like an Easter Island formation and proverbially proclaimed, “Where there is water, there are fish.”

The next thing I knew, theMarauder had piled me into avehicle with another of the M&Mboys-Mackerel Mack-and we wereheaded for the nearest store backin Theriot.

Kid 3- Theriot? Didn’t hescore the winning run in theWorld Series?

Bill- To win his second championship ring in two years. But fate had a Grand Slam in storefor us that even Ryan would haverelished.

I’m not sure who was more surprised-Mack or the lady behindthe counter-when Don and Iplopped down a pack of frozenbait shrimp with our obligatorysupplies of beer, sunflower seedsand Slim Jims.

“I haven’t sold any of thosesince Charlie Sheen was sober,”she said.

“Well, what are they biting on?”we asked.

“Hell if I know,” she shot back.“I just make a living selling overpriced groceries and liquor tothose idiots that put in at the landing across the street.”

Undaunted, we returned tocamp, set up some folding chairson the edge of the canal andbegan fishing off the bank withsome rods Mack had rigged up forus. We put a Motown tape on theCD player and with theMarvellettes singing “Too ManyFish in the Sea” sat back with allthe comforts of home.

Don and I actually each had abite but the frozen shrimp refusedto stay on the hook-some even flying off during our expert casts. That’s when the Marauder cameup with another brilliant idea.

“Let’s have a beer and let theseshrimp thaw out a little bit. Ithink they’ll stay on better.”

That sounded like a grand planto me so I put Mack’s rod downon the ground beside me andpopped a top.

“Hey, look at the time,” I saidnoticing it was 11:55 on an NFLSunday. “I need to make some calls.”

Kid 1- You’re not still bettingon football, are you Uncle Bill?

Bill- Of course not, children. This was for-uh-my fantasy foot-ball team. I had forgotten one ofmy players had an open date.

What I didn’t have-thanks to abeer in one fist and a cell phone inthe other-was an open hand whenmy date with destiny occurred.

My rod and reel-which had beenlying quietly on the bank-baitedwith the remnants of the muchmaligned shrimp still in the water-began moving toward thecanal. Now I’m not talking aboutan inch at a time here. I’m tellingyou the entire rig was speeding

toward the water like LindseyLohan’s Jag down Rodeo Drive atthree in the morning.

Stunned into a catatonic state, Iwatched helplessly as the rod andreel disappeared beneath themuddy waters of the canal.

I glanced in disbelief towardDon to see if he had witnessed mydebacle. Apparently he hadbecause he had fallen out of hischair in a fit of hysterical laughter.Mack was also headed in ourdirection under the false assumption I had thrown his rodinto the drink in disgust.

All I could manage was to stammer, “Rod and reel pulled in.I’ll buy another…”

“Not to worry,” shoutedMackerel Mack, “I’ll fish it out.Which direction did it go, Don?”

The Marauder was still doubledup in laughter. “If this had been aTV sit-com, I would have said ‘notbelievable’, a cartoon-maybe mildly amusing. But having read‘The Old Man and the Sea’…”He couldn’t finish and just pointed toward a bunch of reedsacross the canal.

Now what did I teach you kidsabout odds and probability?

Kid 1- Eat with your gamblingmoney-don’t gamble with youreating money.

Kid 2- Life is always 8-5 against

you.Kid 3- The race doesn’t always

go to the swiftest, nor the battleto the strongest-but that’s the wayto bet.

Bill- Close enough. But theodds on Mack hooking that rodwith a random cast were roughlyequal to my winning the BostonMarathon next year.

But that’s precisely what he didon his third cast-catching the eyeof the rod with his hook andbringing back the entire rig-withthe fish still on it.

Now the fight was on. MackerelMack called over Practical Pudge-one of the famous Wattsboys-and together they cleanedthe reel of mud and slime.

Now I took over, putting all myField and Stream talent into use.Soon, just like the hard-luckSantiago in the Hemingway novel,I had landed the largest fish of my erotic career-a 26-pound black drum.

Kid 1- With all the help youreceived from the M&M boys andPractical Pudge, how can you sayyou caught the fish?

Bill- Hey, I checked the rules ofthe EASL Kids’ Rodeo and since Ihooked him and I landed him-Iclaimed him for my own.Moments later, the Marauderreeled in an 18-inch catfish in a

somewhat less-dramatic fashion.“All right, Barnacle Bill-we’re

even at one fish apiece.”I couldn’t argue with his

reasoning. We took pictures of the fish and

sent them out to our cohorts, slaving away on a faraway lake andput him in a Styrofoam ice chestwhich he filled up completely.Later, we found a good home forhim with some sheephead underthe Dulac Bridge.

Kid 1- Boy, that was someunlucky fish to get caught by you,Uncle Bill-almost as unlucky asyou (laughter).

Bill- Hey, Santiago went 84days without a fish before he land-ed his big marlin and they made amovie about him.

Anyway, I reluctantly went outthe next morning with Mack andthe Marauder despite protestinganything we could do would beanti-climactic. Don caught a couple specs and claimed leadership in our head-to-head competition. I argued I still had aweight advantage and we werealmost ready to call it a draw whenwe heard the gunshots.

They came from the directionwhere Bama and Redfish Randallhad been fishing earlier but noone could recall anyone everbringing a gun on this trip. In a

moment, a phone call explainedeverything.

“Bama and Randall are stranded,” announced Mack.“The battery in their boat blewup.”By the time we got there, some other boats had come to therescue and everyone was back atthe landing.

“It blew straight up in the air,”said Bama. “If I’d had a duckstamp, I could have got me a mallard.”

Kid 2- That would have beensome unlucky duck-almost likeyour fish, Uncle Bill. But speaking of unlucky, is the worldreally going to end on December 21?

Bill- No. The Mayans thoughtso but another great prophetNostradamus predicted the worldwould be saved if by some miraclehis favorite football team-NotreDame-would make the BCSChampionship Game. So theFighting Irish have saved theworld and Christmas will go on asscheduled.

Kid 1- They may wish theworld had ended when Alabamagets through with them.

Bill- Maybe so, but that’s whythey play the game. Now, let’ssettle down to a nice fish and duckdinner and wish everyone a MerryChristmas and a Happy New Year!

When ItRains ..It PoursAs a former baseball player I

am afflicted with the disease ofsuperstition. Ladders, baselinesand spilt salt spooks me to the core.

To me, it seems, lifes’ lessonsconfirm trends that are consistent. For example:Prepare for vacation and thelast days before you leave willturn into working nightmares, everytime. Right?

I was on a roll this pastmonth. I completed the magazine and had all my ducksin-a-row. One morning I wasmaking my final deliveriesbefore I headed on vacation fora week in the woods. I pulledin the parking lot of my lastdelivery and was preparing toexit when a van pulled in nextto me. Promptly a youngsteropen his door and, ‘BANG’ hehit my car. I got out of the carto observe the dent. As Ilooked and tried to rub thepaint mark off of the side of mycar. The father of the childcame around and looked at meand the mark. Before I couldsay a word he started speakingin a language that was foreignto me. Maybe Portuguese? Thekid was definantly getting abutt chewing as they headedinside the store and neverlooked backed. I was standingthere alone, with a dent and apaint mark, knowing I couldn’tspeak or communicate in thatlanguage so I’m stuck with adent.

I made my delivery and headed home to load up for thewell deserved hunting vacation.

I arrived at the camp and wasmoving my luggage in insideand bumped my table andknocked over the Tony’sChacherie’s. In my superstitionmine I thought, ‘Is Tony’s salt?’I didn’t throw any over myshoulder and moved on to my

hunting week.Bright and early I was in my

deer stand and waiting for sunrise. It didn’t take longwhen a deer presented itself. Iwas sitting in a chair on theground and was not very camouflaged. I took my timeraising my rifle when I realizedthe scope was fogged over. Icouldn’t see a darn thing. Iused my glove to wipe the condensation and took anotherlook. I could at least see movement and thought betterof pulling the trigger. I usedmy glove again to wipe themoisture. The game was now25 yards and glaring my way.I’m nervous and the scope nowhas about 30 percent visability. After determining I could seeclear enough I pulled the trig-ger. BOOM. I shot. The deerproceeded to look my directionand not waver to the fact that agiant gun had just been shot. Imissed. It then came closer. Iwent to wiping on the scopeand drew down and pulled thetrigger. It just looked at me andthen walked off. What thex$%#?

It was still early and I wasdown to one bullet so I wentback to the camp, reloaded andwent to another deer stand. Iwas sitting there licking mywounds from my earlier debaclewhen a deer walk out about ahundred yards from me. I havethe opportunity to redeemmyself so I took my time. Iused a prop and adjusted myscope. The cross hairs were onthe target when a bigger deerwalked into my scope. Myknees are starting to shake now.I began to talk to myself. I wasbreathing easy and concentrat-ing. I’m not going to mess this

up. As I began to squezze thetrigger a thought came to me,“You just missed twice from 30yards. What makes you thinkyou can shoot 100 yards?”BOOM. I made the shot and itis now history. I had missedagain. That means I missed 3shots in less than an hour. Iimmediatley went back to thecamp and threw my camocloths on the ground and puton some domestic clothing. Ibecame the camp cook for thenext 2 day.

I know what you’re thinking. My scope must be off. I had 2people shoot my gun and bothhit the bullseye. It was me orforces of nature happening. Ishould have treated the Tony’slike salt and threw some overmy shoulder.

I then went to town andwhen I pulled in the parking lota truck had message on it that Icould have used just a fewhours earlier. Written in big letters on its side was,’Killer for

Hire’. I had to talk to this guy.I asked him why would hename his business that. As apest control service he had anoncompete claus preventinghim from naming his businessafter his real name but he theninformed me his name was

Ronald McDonald. RonaldMcDonald Pest Control justdidn’t sound right so he wentfor the shock factor name.

It was certainly a strange dayand the rest of my vacation didn’t go much better. The badluck cloud stayed over me. Theducks disappeared, the deer disappeared and the dogcracked a tooth.

It finally came the day toreturn home. The bright side ofleaving the camp was I couldremove the bad luck cloud andstart over. It was a nice cool dayand a beautiful ride home. Itfelt good to get home andunload the trailer and relax andrest from a trying vacation.

As I started to off load my 4-wheeler I dropped the trailergate and lo-and-behold I busted a water line. It’sapproaching 30 degrees, thesuns going down and I’m onmy knees trying fix a water pipein the mud and dark.

Moral of the story is, Don’t

take anything for granted whenit comes to superstition and ifyou knock over the Tony’s,chunk some over your shoulder,or else.

CJ Parent The Musical RidgeRunner form the Bluff RoadWhen you first meet Clarence “CJ”Parent you wouldn’t think that hewould even get on a stage much lesssing and play guitar. CJ is a quietperson but he comes out of himselffor his music. Music is life to CJ.Shirley and I had a relaxing visitwith Lynette and CJ on their houseboat that CJ built himself in1985. By trade CJ was a surveyorbut the houseboat is a testament tohis carpentry skills. Compact andcomfortable the boat has all thecomforts of a land house with theadvantage of cruising the river if oneso desired.

The desire to play music startedearly for CJ but his nudge intomusic came from his father. Mr.

Kenneth (CJ’s dad) said he alwayswanted to play guitar so with a couple of box guitars procured fromMexico their musical journey began.CJ was sixteen and still in school soafter his homework was done heand his dad would practice. Thispriceless bond continued (not thehomework but the music) until his dad passed away about threeyears ago. CJ grew up on the Bluff Road inDutchtown. CJ’s dad worked inthe oil field all his life. They

obviously didn’t have television asCJ is one of nine children. Rosannaand Kenneth Parent are the proudparents of (oldest to youngest):Caroline Shook, Cathy Hatcher,Kenneth Jr., Claudia Helgett,Franky King, Clarence “CJ”,Charlie, Celeste Harris and Karla Metz.

CJ was a member of the last classto graduate from Dutchtown HighSchool in 1966. This is when hestarted playing music for the public. His first band was The RidgeRunners. This band was comprisedof: Pierre Curry-vocals, CJ-leadguitar, Billy Joe Berteau-rhythmguitar, and Ronnie Tircuit on drums.

We didn’t try to remember dates, that messes up most of us thesedays, but this is the list of bands CJ has been a part of for the last 44 years:

Lynn Landry &The Ram Rods:Lynn Landry-vocals and rhythmguitar, Gwen Landry-vocals, CJ-leadguitar, the late Cary Arceneaux-bass,Ronnie Bercegeay-bass, the lateHopson Arceneaux-drums.

Mike Broussard & the Drifters:Mike Broussard-vocals & rhythmguitar, CJ –lead guitar and harmony, the late Randy Babin-bass andDaniel Gautreaux on drums.

Southern Boogie Band: CJ–vocals, the late Randy Braud-lead,Randy Bourgeois-drums, CharlieMoran- Bass, David Miles-keyboard,Ruckels Gautreaux-trumpet, MikeLambert-sax.

Destiny: CJ – vocals & lead guitar,John Braud-vocals & sax, DonnyBercegeay-keyboard, Dale Hymel-bass, Sammy Myers-drums.

LA 1 Band: Robert Townsend-drums & vocals, CJ –lead guitar,Lane Swearingen-bass.About this time CJ played withHenry Broussard and his band.

Unfortunately we couldn’t remem-ber these guys either. Some parts ofgetting older really suck! (Look forthem in the article on Henry later inthe series).

The Reunion Band: SteveManseur-lead vocals & guitar, MikeKing-keyboard, Buddy Terrel-tenorsax, Kevin Terrel-baritone sax,Richard Leger-trumpet, CodyMarchand-drums, John Marchand-bass & CJ on lead guitar and vocals.

Cruzzin’: CJ –lead guitar & vocals,keyboard-Kit Duncan, Snag Hebert-drums & Randy Babin on bass.

As you can see CJ has been quitthe busy fella for the last 44 yearsand I’m just talking about hismusic! CJ was a surveyor for GulfStates Utilities until retiring after 25 years because of colon cancer. While fighting the cancer CJ triedto keep surveying but the diseasewas too much. CJ and Lynettehave been through three bouts ofcancer, 2001, 2007 & 2011. Hisbattle isn’t over as once again thecancer has reared its ugly head.Lynette has been there every step ofthe way for CJ. Lynette is anaccomplished musician in her ownright, not a surprise considering shewas a Bercegeay before she marriedCJ. She started playing music in themiddle school band on clarinet. Shealso played the baritone horn andtympani drums. She graduatedfrom East Ascension in 1968 gotmarried and moved to Morgan City. She has three children: DwainDupuis, Kristian Mayon, and SarahMayon. She and CJ are blessed

with 6 grandkids: Dustin, Keila,Lauren, Megan, Bylan and Blair. After her divorce Lynette movedhome and that’s when she met CJ.Her brother actually was playing inthe band with CJ at the time. Shewas encouraged to continue hermusic and got the chance to sit inwith the band on saxophone (not abig stretch from the clarinet). Shegot loads of encouragement fromband members and other sax players. (Musicians all seem eagerto help other musicians with theirart.) CJ was excited when Lynettestarted with the band since he wasalready “sweet” on her. He told ushe always wanted to kiss a sax player. We were glad he waited fora female sax player! Sax playing wasn’t her only attraction for CJ.Those eyes kept drawing him in!Not to mention her outgoing per-sonality, charm and strong character. They got married and remodeledthe houseboat. Lynette was actually

Cruzzin’s sax player until CJ gottoo sick to play. If you happen topick up a Cruzzin’ CD the title cut“Full Recovery” CJ wrote forLynette. A beautiful song be sureto get a copy of the CD.

Throughout CJ’s illness musichas been his stability and drivingforce. He really loves his music, youcan see it in his face when he talksabout it. Lynette was his ROCKalways there for him.

CJ and Lynette would like tothank all the family and friends whogave them support and prayersthrough this ordeal. Your thoughtfulness and prayers are moreappreciated than you will ever know.

Special thanks go out to the musicians that picked up CJ’s slackwhen he was too sick to fulfill hisgigs: Mike and Steve Broussard,Troy Dupree, Steve Manseur, BillBoudreaux and Jerry Acosta. Youguys are the best!

CJ is now retired and working onhis “honey-do” list and Lynetteworks for St Elizabeth Physicians inthe business office. CJ still playsmusic. You’ll see him at any number of benefits playing his guitar and singing. It is admirablethat he plays so many benefits. Idon’t think he has ever turned downa request to play at a benefit. Weare so blessed to have CJ andLynette in our community.

We had a wonderful time floatingon the river at the Parent’s. Theirplace is so peaceful it is always apleasure to spend time with them. Thanks to them for opening theirlives to us!
