Albert D. Horner, landscape photographer, spots a newborn fawn on the side of the dirt road — near where its mother had been seconds before. Nestled in forest debris with legs splayed, the newcomer looks like it is trying to evade detection. Its wide-open eyes are un- blinking. “She just gave birth to that thing,” says an astounded Horner, who thinks it was born that day or perhaps the previous one. This is one face of the Pinelands, a vast, verdant and diverse region that takes in about one-fifth of the state. A different one emerges just up the road, in Wharton State Forest, near the tea-colored Batsto River. There, a sign is unambiguous: “No motorized vehicles. No litter- ing or dumping. No alcoholic beverages.” It is sum- marily ignored. Large ruts from off-road vehicles, illegal on state- owned lands, scar the sandy soil. Tracks gouge the beach along the water. BATES @TODDBBATESAPP ARE NEW JERSEY’S PINELANDS See PINELANDS, Page 4A Yup, it appears to be official — Gov. Chris Christie is running for president. On Saturday, the Associated Press re- ported that Christie’s political team had just gone live with a presidential cam- paign website on behalf of the Republi- can: https://www.chrischristie.com. As late as Thursday, Christie had been coy about his presidential ambitions — despite multiple reports that he plans next week to add his name to the long list of candidates who will seek the GOP nomination for president in 2016. “There’s been absolutely no final de- cision made by me,” Christie said on New Jersey 101.5 FM on Thursday night. “There’s lots of people speculating about lots of things, and I can’t be held to ac- count for every bit of speculation that’s in the press.” Christie made that statement Thurs- day even though he is expected to an- nounce his presidential bid in his child- hood hometown of Livingston Tuesday. The website itself was absent of any detail, but the governor’s campaign slo- gan appears to be “Telling it like it is.” There were no position statements on the site, just a home page at this point with a hazy photo of Christie in a suit — his back almost to the camera, micro- phone in one hand, gesturing with his other, against the backdrop of an Amer- ican flag. Scroll down and there’s a red button to make a campaign contribution and a blue button to sign up to volunteer on the Christie campaign. The website includes the required notice, “Paid for by Chris Christie for President, Inc.” Erik Larsen: 732-682-9359 or [email protected] Gov mum, but website up and running ERIK LARSEN @ERIK_LARSEN What’s new for this year’s Macy’s fireworks?
