LAKEWOODAdmitting that thousands of non-public school students began the year withouttextbooks, school district officials say that asmuch as 20 percent of the books have yet to be or-dered.
During an emergency meeting of the Board ofEducation on Wednesday, Lakewood school offi-cials said the delays in buying textbooks, as well asin hiring nurses and special education teachers forthe private schools, were the result of the districttrying to follow state purchasing guidelines.
As a result, much of Wednesdays meetingturned into a blame game between district offi-cials and board members.
District officials said the delays are the fault ofnonpublic school administrators who failed tocomply with new protocols, while several Board ofEducation members questioned whether the ad-ministration had done enough to advise the non-
public schools about the changes or whether stateofficials had been clear enough about whatchanges Lakewood needed to make.
Board President Issac Zlatkin, who called forthe meeting, said a district official told him that asof Aug. 29 only a couple of days before the startof the school year as much as 70 percent of thebooks had yet to be ordered.
I believe its an outrage, said Zlatkin, who alsoquestioned why thousands of children in privateschools do not have access to nurses or special
education teachers because the adults in townhave yet to reach an agreement.
According to the state Nonpublic School Text-book Law, school districts are required to buy andloan textbooks to private schools that are locat-ed within its boundaries. Districts are reimbursed
