Dear Friends, This weekend’s liturgy is unique in that the 4th week of Advent is really only a

matter of hours. Given that fact, I wanted to dedicate this little letter to the Gospel reading of the 4th Sunday of Advent. The Gospel reading recounts the Annunciation. This day, Christianity begins, perhaps the turning point in history. Since the fall, , for all ages that would follow there has been no set of words of greater value: “Be it done unto me according to your word.” Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum. From this Gospel account, I would like to identify two things that we can learn. We can learn about God and how we are to respond to Him.

Today’s Gospel recounts the moment in which God has entered the world; it begins

to show us the way of God and He is consistent. God chose the way of humility. The Son of God chose as His mother, not someone influential, rich or powerful, but a humble, modest, young woman, Mary of Nazareth, who is radically obedient to God’s command. As Fulton Sheen poignantly describes: In the filthiest place in the world, a stable, Purity was born. He, Who was later to be slaughtered by men acting as beasts, was born among beasts. He, Who would call Himself the “Living Bread descended from Heaven,” was laid in a manger, literally, a place to eat. . . . There was no room in the inn, but there was room in the stable. A stable would be the last place in the world where one would have looked for the Son of God to be born. Divinity is always where one least expects to find it.” (Life of Christ, Fulton Sheen) This humility would be a mark that God would exclaim throughout His whole life, even to His humiliating death.

God abased Himself in order to elevate us. This is the path He takes and invites us

to travel. Therefore, we can look to Mary’s example to consider our “response” to God’s plan. Mary’s response to the angel’s message is simple: fiat, “Let it be done.” She is courageous, she is simple, knowing and trusting that God’s will is her greatest good. She abandons herself to God’s will, not with sad resignation, but with joyful openness, even though she was troubled at what was said to her. “She was troubled, but not alarmed.” says St. Bernard, “Her being troubled was a mark of modesty; her not being alarmed of courage; while her keeping silence and meditating was a mark of prudence.”

There are two characteristics that we can highlight in Mary’s response: her

consistency and her constancy. After saying “yes” to God’s will she orders all things to this end – bringing Christ into the world. In her life, there is no separation between what she did and what she believed. She had a consistency in faith and every other dimension of her life. We may ask, do I lack consistency in my life? Am I conforming my will to the will of God in some areas but not others? Usually it happens that we are wont to yield to God’s plan in certain areas of our life.

Secondly, Mary’s constancy is exemplar. How often have we made spiritual

commitments or resolutions and held them for one or two days and then left them aside? Holiness and virtue are found in being constant to that commitment, day after day, week after week. Are there any resolutions and spiritual practices that I am being called to be more constant? Mary’s constancy brought her all the way to the foot of the cross.

Mary is semper fidelis, always faithful, she always leads us to the deepest realities

and the most important reason for any season – her son Jesus Christ. May we, through her intercession, find our hearts ready and well-prepared for this Christmas season which may have already begun (depending upon when you read this). Merry Christmas!!

Fr. Brian
