India overtook Japan to
become the second-
largest steel producer in
the world after China in
2016, according to data
released by the
International Stainless
Steel Forum (ISSF).
India’s stainless steel production rose to 3.32
million tons for 2016 showing an impressive
growth of about 9% over 3.0 million tons
achieved in 2015.
Petroleum Minister co chairs India OPEC
Institutional Dialogue at Vienna
The Minister of State (I/C) for Petroleum and
Natural Gas, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan visited
Vienna, Austria to co-chair the 2nd India-OPEC
Institutional Dialogue at the OPEC headquarters.
The meeting took place two days prior to the
OPEC Ministerial meeting that is scheduled
from 25th May.
Pradhan held a one-to-one meeting with the
Secretary General of OPEC Mr Mohammad
Sanusi Barkindo.
It was agreed that India will host the next
meeting during 2018.

Countries (OPEC) is an intergovernmental
organization of 13 nations as of 2017, founded
in 1960 in Baghdad by the first five members
(Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela),

As of 2015, the 13 countries accounted for an
estimated 42 percent of global oil production and
73 percent of the world's "proven" oil reserves.
As of January 2017, OPEC's members are
Algeria, Angola, Ecuador, Gabon, Iran, Iraq,
Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia (the
de facto leader), United Arab Emirates, and
Venezuela, while Indonesia is a former member.
Mohammed Barkindo is the Secretary General
of OPEC.
3rd RCEP Inter-sessional Ministerial Meeting
Commerce and Industry Minister Smt. Nirmala
Sitharaman led the Indian delegation to the 3rd
Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership
(RCEP) Inter-sessional Ministerial Meeting on 21-
22 May 2017 in Hanoi in which Trade Ministers of
15 other RCEP countries participated.
Trade Minister and Industry Minister of
Philippines Mr Ramon Lopez, was the Chair of
the Meeting as Philippines is currently holding
the Presidency of ASEAN this year and Minister
of Industry and Trade of Vietnam, Mr Tran Tuan
Anh, as the host extended a warm welcome to
the delegates.
So far 4 Ministerial Meetings, 3 Inter-sessional
Ministerial Meetings and 18 Rounds of the Trade
Negotiating Committee at the technical level
have been held.

(RCEP) is a proposed free trade agreement

Thailand, Vietnam) and the six states with which
ASEAN has existing free trade agreements

RCEP negotiations were formally launched in

Japan to build war museum in Manipur
Japan is going to build a war museum at the hillock
at Maiba Lokpa in Bishnupur district, Manipur,
where a Japanese camp was located during World
War II.
The Japanese ambassador to India, Kenji
Hiramatsu, said about 70,000 Japanese soldiers
had died in battles from March to June 1944 in
Imphal and Kohima.

Indians issued maximum work visas to UK in
2016
Indian nationals were issued the maximum number
of skilled work visas to live and work in the UK last
year, according to statistics released.
Indians accounted for 58 per cent of the total
skilled work visas granted last year -- 53,863 of
a total of 93,566.
Americans were the second largest community
with 9,255 visas.
Mumbai, Kota among world's most crowded
cities
Two Indian cities - Mumbai and Kota - have been
named among the world's most crowded in a list
topped by Dhaka, said the World Economic Forum
(WEF), citing UN-Habitat data.
With a population density of 44,500 people per
square kilometre, Dhaka, the capital of
Bangladesh, is the most crowded city on the
planet, followed by India's financial capital
Mumbai, home to 31,700 people per square
kilometre at the second place.
Kota in Rajasthan with 12,100 people per square
kilometre was ranked seventh.
G7 Summit begins in Italy
The two-day G7 Summit, that will focus on issues
surrounding security and growth, began on 26
May in Italy.

Indo-Thailand Siam Bharat 17: HADR
Indo-Thailand Humanitarian Assistance and
Disaster Relief (HADR) Table Top Exercise 2017 is
in progress at Chiang Mai, Thailand from 22 May to
26 May 17 between the Indian Air Force and Royal
Thailand Air Force (RTAF).
This is second such exercise to be conducted
between the two Air Forces.
The aim of the bilateral exercise is to evolve
SOPs for planning and executing relief missions
during unforeseen natural calamities like
Tsunami, earthquakes, cyclones, floods etc.

India has announced
a $500 million line
of credit to

countries resolved to

The two countries also signed a maritime

A total of four agreements were signed after the

The European Extremely Large Telescope (E-

The External Affairs Ministry hosted the 'India-
Pacific Islands Sustainable Development
Conference in Suva, Fiji, on May 25-26.
The conference was held under the framework of

India participated in global disaster risk
reduction meet in Mexico
India has participated in a five-day long Global
Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR)
summit held in Mexico.
An Indian delegation led by Minister of State for
Home Kiren Rijiju went for the summit.
The summit, held at Mexico’s Cancun between
May 22 and 26, was attended by over 5,000
delegates comprising heads of state, ministers
and CEOs.
The GPDRR is a global forum for strategic
advice, coordination, partnership development
and review of progress in the implementation of
the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk
Reduction (SFDRR) 2015-2030 which was
adopted at the 3rd UN World conference on
disaster risk reduction held in March 2015 in
Sendai, Japan.
43rd G-7 summit held in Italy
The 43rd G7 summit was held on May 26–27, 2017
in Taormina, Sicily, Italy.
The 43rd G7 summit was the first summit for
British Prime Minister Theresa May, French
President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime
Minister Paolo Gentiloni, and U.S. President
Donald Trump.
It was the first time since 1987 that the G7
summit held in Italy was not hosted by Silvio
Berlusconi.
Points to Remember
The Group of 7 (G7) is a group consisting of
Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the
United Kingdom and the United States. The
European Union is also represented within the
G7.
In March 2014, the G7 declared that a
meaningful discussion was currently not
possible with Russia in the context of the G8.
Since then, meetings have continued within the
G7 process.
Next G-7 Summit will be held in Canada in
2018.

In its India Development Report released recently,
the World Bank said the country had one of the
lowest female participation in the workforce,

Jobs for Indian women remain primarily in the
agriculture sector.
The share of women in services and industry is
less than 20%.
Mumbai is the world’s busiest single-runway
airport
The GVK group-run Mumbai airport has become the
world's busiest amongst the single-runway facilities
by handling 837 flights a day or one in 65 seconds
on an average in fiscal 2017, taking over London's
Gatwick airport that had 757 flights a day.
In terms of the number of passengers also, the
city airport tops with 45.2 million people flying
in and out in fiscal 2017 as against 44 million at
Gatwick airport.
Notably, no other large city in the world is
served by one airport, that too with a single-
runway.

India second most attractive renewable energy
investment destination: EY
India has overtaken the US to become the second-
most attractive country after China for renewable
energy investment, according to a report by UK
accountancy firm EY.
In an annual ranking of the top 40 renewable
energy markets worldwide in terms of allure,
China was ranked at the top, followed by India.
The US slipped to the third spot from the first in
the last year's ranking, EY said.
India was ranked third on the last year's EY
renewable energy country attractiveness index
(RECAI) behind the US and China.
Japan world leader in life expectancy: WHO
Australia is one of the "world leaders" for life
expectancy, ranked only behind Japan, Singapore

Organisation's (WHO) latest world health check.
The data was taken from 194 WHO members,

India's Healthcare Ranks Below Bangladesh And
Sri Lanka: Study
Despite making giant leaps in medicine, India
continues to be at the bottom in the ranking of
countries in terms of quality and accessibility of
healthcare.
According to the new Global Burden of Disease
study published in the Lancet, while South
Korea, Turkey, Peru, China and the Maldives
have seen some of the greatest improvements in
healthcare access and quality since the 1990s,
India has failed to achieve most of the healthcare
goals.
India ranked at 154 with an score of 44.8 in the
list of 195 countries.
China is far ahead of India ranking at 82 with a
score of 74 on the index. Sri Lanka has scored 73
on the index, whereas Brazil and Bangladesh
have score 65 and 52, respectively.
Andorra scored the highest score (94.6) while
Central African Republic had the lowest (28.6).
Rank of India Improves in International Tourist
Arrivals
As per the UNWTO definition, International Tourist
Arrivals (ITAs) comprises two components namely
Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) and Arrivals of
Non-Resident Nationals.
The UNWTO in its barometer ranks countries in
terms of their ITAs.
So far only the figures of FTAs were compiled
in India. However, now India has started
compiling the data arrivals of Non-Resident
Indians (NRIs), also.
As per the latest UNWTO Barometer for March
2017, Rank of India in International Tourist
Arrivals in both 2014 and 2015 is 24 as against
the previous rank of 41 and 40 in the year 2014
and 2015, respectively.
With this inclusion the share of India in the ITAs
has also increased from 0.68% (based on FTAs)
to 1.12% in the year 2015.
Jordan’s Azraq refugee camp becomes first to
run entirely on solar energy
A refugee camp in Jordan has become the first in the
world to be powered by renewable energy.
About 20,000 Syrian refugees living in the
desert camp of Azraq will be able to
use electricity generated by a solar plant.
The new $9.6m two-megawatt solar plant was
built by the Ikea Foundation’s Brighter Lives for
Refugees campaign and is expected to save
$1.5m a year, which the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees will be able to use
to improve sanitation, shelters and organise
activities around the camp.

India Ranks Third Highest Globally In Internal
Displacement Numbers: Report
Nearly 2.4 million people in India were internally
displaced due to conflict, violence and disasters in
2016, the third highest number globally, a new
report by a UN monitoring centre said.
The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre
and the Norwegian Refugee Council released a
new report which ranked India third among
countries most affected by displacement related
to disasters followed by China and the
Philippines.
It said that conflict, violence and disasters
caused 31.1 million new internal displacements
in 2016.
The highest displacements were recorded in
China with 7.4 million people getting impacted,
followed by the Philippines (5.9 million), India
(2.4 million) and Indonesia (1.2 million).

Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

India hold festival in Egypt to mark
Rabindranath Tagore's birth anniversary
India is organising a cultural festival in Egypt to
mark the 156th birth anniversary of the famous
Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore.
Tagore Festival which is being organised by the
Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture
(MACIC), the cultural wing of the Indian
Embassy in Cairo, from May 8-12 will feature a
dance show, film screening, a play and painting
competition.
On May 8, the movie 'Kabuliwala' directed by
Hemen Gupta will be screened at the Hanager
Cinema, Opera House Complex.
The movie is based on a novel written by Tagore
about an immigrant from Kabul who forms a
bond with a young girl in India who reminds him
of his daughter in Afghanistan.
The Tagore Festival is organised in cooperation
with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, Cairo
Opera House, Cultural Production Sector,
Dancers’ Guild and the Indian Community
Association in Egypt.

Jordan, US launch ‘Eager Lion’ military exercise
Jordan and the United
States kicked off
Eager Lion, an annual
military exercise with
about 7,400 troops
from more than 20 nations taking part.
US and Jordanian officials said the manoeuvres
would include border security, cyber defence,
and "command and control" exercises, to bolster
coordination in response to threats including
terrorism.
A statement by the Jordanian army said troops
from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Arab Gulf
region are taking part in the exercises which run
to May 18, including from Britain, Japan, Kenya
and Saudi Arabia.
India unanimously elected to head UN-Habitat
India has been unanimously elected as the President
of the UN-Habitat, an organ of the United Nations’
Organisation (UNO) that promotes socially and
environmentally sustainable human settlements
across the world, after 10 years.
UN-Habitat reports to the United Nations
General Assembly.
Further to election, Minister of Housing &
Urban Poverty Alleviation M.Venkaiah Naidu
will chair the four day meeting of the 58 member
Governing Council of UN-Habitat in Nairobi,
Kenya.
Naidu will preside over the deliberations of the
Governing Council of UN-Habitat for the next
two years.
Since the UN-Habitat came into being in
1978, It is only the third time that India has
been elected to lead this important organization
after 2007 and 1988.
India, Australia bilateral naval exercise next
month
India and Australia will hold their second bilateral
naval exercise next month off the coast of Western
Australia.
The first-ever such exercise, called AUSINDEX,
was held in September, 2015 in the Bay of
Bengal.
Australia's High Commissioner to India
Harinder Sidhu, during an interaction with
journalists, also emphasised that bilateral ties
have seen a "steady upward trajectory" and

29th India- Indonesia Co-Ordinated Patrol
(Corpat) Commences
The 29th series of India–Indonesia CORPAT is
scheduled from 09 – 25 May 17 with the opening
ceremony being conducted from 09 -12 May 17 at
Port Blair under the aegis of Andaman and Nicobar
Command.
The Indonesian Naval Ship KRI Sutedi
Senoputra has arrived at Haddo Wharf, Port
Blair to mark the commencement of the 29th
series of IND–INDO CORPAT.
The closing ceremony of the CORPAT is
scheduled at Belawan, Indonesia from 22 – 25
May 17.
Under the broad ambit of this strategic
partnership, Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) and the
Indian Navy have been carrying out coordinated
patrolling twice a year since 2002 near the
International Maritime Boundary Line to keep
this part of the Indian Ocean region safe and
secure for commercial shipping and
international trade.

Bengaluru Tops List of World’s Most Affordable
Tech Cities
Bengaluru has been named the world’s most
affordable tech city in the new Savills Tech Cities
Index.
The Indian technology hub is the most affordable
out of 22 cities that were graded on different
parameters.
While the per-week rent is $236 (roughly Rs
15,000) in the city as compared to the global
average of $368 (almost Rs 24,000), the city
ranked 20th overall, losing points on time taken
for commutes.
The city which ranked first overall was Austin,
Texas while New York ranked as the best in
“business environment”.

anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth) of each

China to organise OBOR summit on 14 May
China is organising a grand two-day summit from
May 14 to showcase its plans to build a network of
trade routes—One Belt, One Road (OBOR)—that
will connect Asia, Africa, the Middle East and
Europe.
Nearly 65 countries are taking take part in the
summit though only 20 heads of state will attend.
China plans to issue a joint statement at the end
of the two-day summit to showcase a wide
approval of its ambitious project.
India and Japan have shown reluctance to attend
the summit. While Japan will send a delegation,
India has refused to send any representative.
Indian mission, Vedanta adopt UJALA scheme
in UK
The Indian High Commission in London and metals
tycoon Anil Agarwal led Vedanta Group will be
among the first to adopt India’s UJALA scheme of
replacing all their old lamps with energy-saving
LED bulbs in the UK.
Minister of state for power, coal and renewable
energy Piyush Goyal presented them with their
first set of LED bulbs during the launch of the
Energy Efficiency Services Limited’s
(EESL) expansion plans in the UK, which have
been branded as ‘UK Joins Affordable LEDs for
All’ (UJALA).
The National LED programme was launched by
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2015.
Under this scheme, consumer can buy five LED
bulbs at the rate of Rs 20 each by showing
monthly electricity bills or ID cards.
Over 100 countries affected by WannaCry
ransomware so far
The Wanna Cry ransomware attack - one of the
largest ever cyber attacks - appeared to be slowing
around 24 hours after it wrecked havoc and shut
down tens of thousands of computer systems across
104 countries.
The slow down happened soon after
'MalwareTech', a Britain-based security
researcher, accidentally discovered a 'kill switch'
to halt the Wanna Cry attack.
Russia was the worst affected with Avast telling
that 60 per cent of all infected computers were
located in that country.

WannaCry, is a form of ransomware that affects
Microsoft’s Windows operating system.
When a system is infected, a pop up window
appears, prompting you to pay to recover all your
files within three days, with a countdown timer
on the left of the window.
It adds that if you fail to pay within that time, the
fee will be doubled, and if you don’t pay within
seven days, you will lose the files forever.
Payment is accepted only with Bitcoin.

India will give Rs 35 crore to Bangladesh in the
next five years
India will give Rs 35 crore to children of freedom
fighters in Bangladesh in the next five years under
the new 'Muktijodha scholarship' scheme.
All freedom fighters are now eligible for five
years multiple entry on Indian visa and 100 of
them will be provided free medical treatment in
Indian hospitals every year.

India initiated the Muktijodha Scholarship
Scheme in 2006 for descendants of the 1971
Freedom Fighters. Until now, more than 10,000
scholarships worth Tk 150 million have been
disbursed.
Under the new scheme, students at a higher
secondary level will get a one-time grant of Tk
200,000 (Rs 1,53,700) and those at the
undergraduate level will get Tk 50,000 (Rs
38,430).

AIIB grants $160 mn for Andhra Pradesh Power

Bank (AIIB) today approved USD 160 million loan

project.
• The AIIB, in which India is the second
largest shareholder after China, has approved
the project with the objective to strengthen
the power transmission and distribution
system in Andhra Pradesh.

Govt approves abolition of Foreign Investment
Promotion Board
The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister
Shri Narendra Modi has given its approval to the
phasing out of Foreign Investment Promotion Board
(FIPB).
The proposal entails abolishing the FIPB and
allowing administrative Ministries/Departments
to process applications for FDI requiring
government approval.
Henceforth, the work relating to processing of
applications for FDI and approval of the
Government thereon under the extant FDI Policy
and FEMA, shall now be handled by the
concerned Ministries/Departments in
consultation with the Department of Industrial
Policy & Promotion(DIPP), Ministry of
Commerce, which will also issue the Standard
Operating Procedure (SOP) for processing of
applications and decision of the Government
under the extant FDI policy.
In addition, Foreign Investors will find India
more attractive destination and this will result in
more inflow of FDI. The move will provide ease
of doing business and will help in promoting the
principle of Maximum Governance and
Minimum Government.
Currently around 91-95% of FDI inflow happens
through the automatic route, adding that there
are only 11 sectors (including defence and retail)
needing government approval.
The FIPB was initially set up under the Prime
Minister's Office following the economic
liberalisation in the early 1990s.
It shifted under the DIPP in 1996, and then in
2003 to the department of economic affairs in
the finance ministry.

morning' squads to monitor and

state.
These squads will comprise representatives of

A government resolution issued said these
squads have been asked to keep an eye on the
areas where this practice is prevalent and to
ensure that locals have access to toilets there.
BSNL launches satellite phone service
State-owned BSNL has started satellite phone
service through INMARSAT which will be initially
offered to government agencies and later opened for
others citizen in phased manner.
The service will cover areas where no networks
are present and will be provided by INMARSAT
which has 14 satellites.
Construction Of India's First Underwater Rail
Tunnel Finishes
Boring of India’s first underwater rail tunnel running
under the Hooghly river has finished before its
scheduled deadline of July.
The tunnel is 16.6kms, 10.8kms of which runs
underground. And of 10.8kms, 502 metres under
the water and the whole thing connects Howrah
to the west and Salt lake to the east.
It will have 12 stations and six will be
underground. Estimated cost of the entire project
is Rs 5,000 crores.
Government launches 'e-Sanad' for digital
attestation of documents
The government has announced a service to digitise
the process of attestation of documents for those
going abroad, so that they are spared the trouble of
visiting government offices for the purpose.
'e-Sanad', an initiative of the Ministry of
External Affairs (MEA), in association with two
other ministries -- will initially be hosting school
leaving certificates with the help of Central
Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
In subsequent phases, the portal will also host
documents from central universities.

has become the first education board to partner
with the Ministry of External Affairs to
implement e-sanad.
IIT-KGP signs MoU with MP for measuring
happiness
IIT Kharagpur's Rekhi Centre of Excellence for the
Science of Happiness has signed an MoU with
Madhya Pradesh government to collaborate on the
development of a Happiness Index for measuring the
well-being of the people of the state.
IIT-KGP will develop the index and analyse data
collected by the state government to assess the
level of happiness and chalk out
recommendations that can be used to enhance
happiness.
IIT-KGP will also develop an online screening
and assessment system in order to screen and
identify suitable volunteers from the database of
more than 30,000 people.
Dhola-Sadiya bridge named after Bhupen
Hazarika
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday
inaugurated the country's longest river bridge — the
Dhola-Sadiya bridge.
Spanning 9.15 km, the bridge is built across the
Lohit river which is a tributary of the
Brahmaputra river.

The Dhola-Sadiya bridge will reduce the travel
time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh
from six hours to just one hour as the distance
will shrink by 165 km.
After inaugurating the Rs. 2,056 crore bridge at
Sadia in Assam’s Tinsukia district, Mr. Modi
walked a short distance over it.
The Steel Authority of India Limited has
supplied around 90 per cent, or around 30,000
tonnes of steel, including TMT, structurals and
plates, for the construction of the bridge.
The construction of the bridge began in 2011
under the public-private-partnership, which is
3.55 km longer than Mumbai’s Bandra-Worli
Sea Link, making it the longest bridge in India.
WHO confirms India's 1st Zika virus cases in
Ahmedabad
India's first three cases
of the Zika virus were
reported between
February 2016 and
January 2017 in
Ahmedabad, the
World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed in its
disease outbreak bulletin.
It said the Centre confirmed the three cases, in
two pregnant women and in an elderly man, on
May 15, 2017.
However, the detection and confirmation of Zika
cases wasn't made public by the state
government, apparently because it came in the
run-up to the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investment

Haryana announces pension scheme for

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar

The Manipur government has declared Dailong
village of Tamenglong district as a Biodiversity
Heritage Site of the state.
Dialong village, covering an area of 11.35 sq km,
has been declared as Biodiversity Heritage Site
under Section 37(1) of Biological Diversity Act,
2002.
The declaration was made after the
recommendation of Manipur Biodiversity

India to be first in world to run all government
ports on green energy
All 12 major domestic ports will soon switch to
renewable energy to meet their entire power
requirements, making India the first country to have
all government-owned ports running on solar and
wind energy.
The government plans to install almost 200
megawatt solar and wind power generation
capacity at the ports by 2019, officials said.
Almost 150 mw of this will be solar power and
50 mw wind power generation capacity.
The capacity could be ramped up to 500 mw in
the next few years.
India emerges as world's third largest aviation
market
The central government said that India has emerged
as the third largest aviation market in the world with
a passenger traffic of over 10 crore reported for
2016-17.
This was stated by Minister of State for Civil
Aviation Jayant Sinha at a media event on the
achievements of the Ministry of Civil Avation on
the completion of three years of the NDA
government.
Sinha said that government's key scheme in the
sector regional connectivity scheme (RCS-
UDAN) will allow India to have 200 plus
airports in the next 10-15 years.
The minister added that there are currently 496
aircraft in operation with domestic airlines, and
another 654 planes are under purchase orders.
Delhi Police launch bicycle patrol

Plastic Park to be set up in Panipat
Union minister Ananth Kumar has said that a plastic
park will be set up over a 75 acre land in Panipat at
a cost of Rs 1,500 crore, while a pharma park will be
set in over a 100 acre land in Karnal.
The plastic park to be set up in Panipat will
generate employment opportunities for 30,000
plastic engineers and technicians, Kumar said,
adding the pharma park in Karnal aims make the
country self-sufficient in terms of medicine
production, and would help reduce production
cost by 30 per cent.
The Union government will provide all general
facilities in the Pharma Park, he said.

India will set up 7000 mw of indigenous nuclear
power plants, power, coal, renewable and mines
minister Piyush Goyal said.
The Union Cabinet has approved the scheme that
will promote energy self sufficiency, clean,
carbon free sources of power and place India
high among nuclear power countries, he said.
He said the decision will lead to Rs 70,000 crore
domestic orders for pressurised heat water
reactors and create 33,400 direct and indirect
jobs.
Once completed, the 10 reactors of 700 MW
each will give much needed fillip to the domestic
nuclear industry.

seeks to set up the Institute on 587 acre of land

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister
Narendra Modi has given its ex-post facto approval
to the Faculty Exchange Agreement signed between
the National Defence College, New Delhi and
National Defence College, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The objective of the Agreement is to
institutionalize regular exchange programs and

NITI Aayog holds the first Samavesh meeting

Country's 1st ornamental fish park in Chennai
by August
India's first Aquatic Rainbow Technology Park
(ARTP) will be set up in Chennai within three
months.
The park, an ultra-modern exclusive facility for
ornamental fish equipped with multi-species
hatchery and live feed culture units, will fulfil a
major requirement of the industry for mass
production of high value aquarium fish.
Fisheries College and Research Institute,
Ponneri, will develop the facility.
Tamil Nadu is the second largest exporter of
ornamental fish after West Bengal.
IIEST creates India's first smart grid project
The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and
Technology (IIEST) has successfully created the
country's first smart grid project, which will generate
power from renewable sources of energy.
The project will soon be inaugurated by
President Pranab Mukherjee, IIEST Director
Prof Ajoy Kumar Roy said.
The smart grid will be synchronised to generate
power from solar, wind and vegetable waste
resources, depending on the weather conditions
and availability of waste products.
It is the first of its kind in the country.

Indian Army gets M777 howitzers 30 years after

After a 30-year wait for new artillery guns since the
Bofors scandal, the Indian Army has received the
first two ultra light howitzers from the US as part of

The M-777 A-2 ultra-light howitzers (ULH),
having a maximum range of 30 km and
manufactured by the BAE Systems, were being

deal with the US in November last year for
supply of the 145 howitzers at a cost of nearly Rs
5,000 crore.
India to host annual meet of AfDB

35. Turbo Megha Airways first private airline to
get UDAN licence
Turbo Megha Airways has become the first private
airline to get a licence to fly under UDAN, the
government scheme for subsidized regional flights.
Turbo Megha Airways which is also called
TruJet, is one of the five operators who have
been awarded a total of 128 routes under the
UDAN scheme.
The airline will use three ATR-72 aircraft, and
will add more planes later.
Bengaluru Airport to Go green
The Bangalore International Airport Limited
(BIAL) inaugurated solar farms at the Kempegowda
International Airport premises.
The first project of 440kW has been installed in
the car park area in front of the BIAL corporate
office, and the second project of 2.5MW solar
panels at the airside.
Both projects - jointly - will reduce carbon
emission by 3125 tonnes per annum (3075
tonnes of carbon dioxide emission per annum at
the airside and 550 tonnes at the car park area).

PM Narendra Modi lays foundation stone for
993-crore projects of Kandla port

related to development of Kandla port.
The projects for which foundation was laid
include a convention centre named after

Modi also suggested that the Kandla Port Trust

Other projects include two cargo berths, a road

facility at the port.
Odisha to introduce boat ambulances in four
districts
Odisha will introduce boat ambulance service in four
districts where people face difficulties in getting
health service.
The boat ambulance service will be available in
the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri, Kendrapara
and Kalahandi where people face problems in
availing 108 ambulance service due to
intervening large water bodies in the form of
rivers and dams disrupting road communication.
The state government has sanctioned six boat
ambulances for these areas out of the state funds
and these will be part of the 108 ambulance
service.
This is part of an MoU signed between the State
Government and the Ziquitza Health Care.

Calcutta High Court judge C S Karnan be
immediately sent to jail for 6 months for committing
contempt of court by his scandalous remarks.
This is the first time that a sitting judge has been
sent to prison.
Justice Karnan had levelled allegations against
several judges of the Madras High Court and the
apex court and stubbornly refused to take the
allegations back.
To make things worse, he had passed orders
against the seventh judge bench, which was
hearing his contempt case.
SC has also banned media from publishing
content of orders passed by Karnan.
Railways to acquire EoTT system to run trains
without guards
The Indian Railways will float global tenders worth
over Rs 100 crore for acquiring sophisticated
equipment to run 1,000 trains without guards.
The End of Train Telemetry (EoTT) equipment
is used to establish communication between the
locomotive driver and the last wagon of the train
to ensure that the train is running with all
coaches/wagons as a complete unit.
The equipment is designed to do the guard’s job
by giving indication to the loco driver in case of
parting of coaches or wagons from the rear side
of the train.
Each set of EoTT device is estimated to cost
approximately Rs10 lakh.

litigation in all courts, which in the first phase
promises paperless filing of appeals in the Supreme

Justice Khehar said the idea of court records
digitisation came to him immediately after

minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who had pointed
out that the government had sanctioned Rs 2,130
crore for the e-court mission mode project for
2016-17.

Union Agriculture Minister said that people can

Army brings back CASO as part of counter-

Aadhaar not mandatory for PAN, ITR in J&K,
Assam, Meghalaya
The Revenue Department has exempted residents of
Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, Meghalaya, and
citizens above 80 years from mandatory quoting of
Aadhaar to obtain PAN cards and file tax returns.
A notification in this regard has been issued by
the government.
This comes at a time when a case challenging
mandatory use of Aadhaar for PAN (permanent
account number) and filing income tax return
(ITR) is pending in the Supreme Court.
The Finance Ministry notification gives the
exemption to “an individual who does not
possess the Aadhaar number or the enrolment
ID” who is residing in Assam, Jammu and
Kashmir and Meghalaya.
The exemption is also for persons of 80 years or
more, non-residents and non-citizens.
Kerala tops, Bihar last in public affairs index

have secured first and second rankings for the

(PAI) in governance in States
Poll-bound Gujarat gained two positions rising
from five in 2016 to three.
Karnataka slipped from third position in 2016 to

There was no change in the last four positions

Real Estate Act Come Into Effect From 1 May
2017
The Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act,
2016 (RERA) will finally give India’s real estate
sector its first regulator from May 1, 2017.
However, only 13 states and Union Territories
(UTs) have so far notified rules.
The act was passed by parliament last year and
the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban
Poverty Alleviation had given time till May 1,
2017, to formulate and notify rules for the
functioning of the regulator.
RERA seeks to bring clarity and fair practices
that would protect the interests of buyers and
also impose penalties on errant builders.
Points to Remember
The Real Estate (Regulation and Development)
Act, 2016, was passed by Parliament in March
2016.
States were given a year to set up this framework
— namely, the Regulatory Authority and the
Appellate Tribunal. From May 1, 2017, the Act
has come into force in its entirety.
At the level of the state, the Regulatory
Authority and Appellate Tribunal must dispose
of cases within 60 days. Appeals to the High
court can be made within 60 days.

New Delhi to NDRF included 'E-Nasika', a

handed over to NSG an equipment called
'OTL-300', It can instantly detect partially
camouflaged optical elements, such as
telescopes, binoculars and night vision
devices.

New Premier Train for the Mumbai-Goa route

Railways will unveil a new premier train service
between Mumbai and Goa in June with state-of-the-
art facilities, called the Tejas Express.
• Comprising executive class and chair cars,
Tejas coaches will be equipped with 22 new
features, including fire and smoke detection
and suppression systems and the improved
aesthetics.
• After the Mumbai-Goa run, the Tejas
service, which was promised in the budget,
is likely to be pressed on the Delhi-
Chandigarh route.

Transport Department of Haryana and

(WRI) to take the project to 10 districts of the

• While addressing the workshop, the chief

vision to achieve target of "zero deaths in
road accidents".
Madhya Pradesh changed Financial Year as
January- December
Madhya Pradesh has become the first state to switch
to the January-December financial year from the
existing April-March , with the state cabinet
endorsing the move.
• The move breaks a 150-year tradition as
India started adopting the April-March
financial year from 1867.
• The decision comes close on the steps of
Prime Minister Narendra Modi making a
pitch for shifting the fiscal year to January-
December period during NITI Aayog's
governing council meet in the national

Indore ranked cleanest city in India, Gonda in UP
the dirtiest
Indore has been ranked as the cleanest city in India

dirtiest among 434 cities, a government survey has
found.

included 45% marks for cities becoming

Govt declares entire Assam as 'disturbed' area
The Centre has declared the entire Assam as a
"disturbed" area under the Armed Forces (Special
Powers) Act -- the AFSPA -- for three more months,
citing various violent activities by insurgent groups
ULFA, NDFB and others.
• In a gazette notification, the Home
Ministry said the entire Assam, besides
bordering areas of Meghalaya, have been
declared "disturbed" under the AFSPA
for three months with effect from May 3.
• The ministry said there were 75 incidents
of violence in Assam in 2016 in which 33
people, including four security
personnel, were killed and 14 others
were abducted.

Haryana government said it has decided to open

Rubella measles and will start vaccination drive
from March 2018.

Israel signs $630 million arms deal with India
Israel and India penned a deal worth $630 million,
to provide India's navy with missile defence systems
following a record weapons sale between the two
countries last month.
The new contract will see state-
owned Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) supply
LRSAM air and missile defence systems for
four Indian naval ships.
IAI said the contract will be carried out
with India's Bharat Electronics Limited, which
will be the project's main contractor.
LRSAM is an advanced air and
missile defence system, jointly developed by
IAI and India's Defence Research and
Development Organisation.

IOC is India's most profitable PSU
The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has overtaken the
Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to become
the country’s most profitable state-owned company.
IOC, which has for decades been India’s biggest
company by turnover, posted a 70% jump in net
profit to Rs 19,106.40 crore in the financial year
ended March 31, 2017.
Reliance Industries retained the crown of being
India’s most profitable company for the third
year in a row, posting a net Rs 29,901 crore in
financial year 2016-17.
India to grow at 7.2% in 2017-18: World Bank
In its latest India Development Update, the World
Bank said India’s economy will grow 7.2% in fiscal
year 2017-18.
GST, the report said, would lead to higher tax
collection, greater digital financial inclusion and

This $500 million credit is Exim India’s first

New Re 1 notes to be circulated soon by RBI
New one rupee notes with a multicoloured look will
soon be put in circulation by the Reserve Bank of
India, the RBI announced.
"The colour of One Rupee currency note shall be
predominantly pink green on obverse and
reverse in combination with others," it added.
Elaborating on the design of the note, the central
bank said it will bear the signature of Economic
Affairs Secretary.
"The numbering shall be in black at right hand
bottom portion of the note," it said.
On the reverse side, the year '2017' is mentioned.
Amul inks MoU with ISRO for fodder acreage

AP ropes in Singapore firms to develop start-up
area in Amaravati
Singapore-based Ascendas-Singbridge Pvt Ltd and
Sembcorp Development Ltd were awarded a
contract by the Andhra Pradesh government to act as
the master developer for a start-up area, spanning
1,691 acres, to be built in the upcoming capital city
of Amaravati.
The Rs528 crore project will be completed in
three phases over a span of 15 years.
Ascendas-Singbridge and Sembcorp will form
the Amaravati Development Partner (ADP)
along with the Amaravati Development
Corporation (ADC).
ADP will undertake the master development of
the start-up area, which will be built along with
the development of the 900-acre Government
Core area in Amaravati.
For speedy implementation of the project, a
high-level joint implementation steering
committee (JISC) will also be formed.
India Ratings downgrades IDBI Bank
India Ratings and Research downgraded State-run
IDBI Bank to AA from AA+ and gave a negative
outlook due to challenges arising out of stressed
assets and weak capital position.
The rating agency also downgraded various debt
instruments of the bank.
The Reserve Bank had recently initiated ‘prompt
corrective action’ for the bank on account of
higher NPAs and negative return on assets.
GST rates announced; milk, cereals to be
exempted
The meeting of the 14th GST Council was held in
Srinagar marking participation of Union Finance
Minister, Mr Arun Jaitley, Finance Ministers of all
the states, Finance Secretaries and other taxation
officials from the states and union territories.
The Goods and Services (GST) Council has
agreed on the fitment of almost all commodities
in the various tax slabs under the new indirect
regime to be rolled out on July 1.
Milk, cereals (unpackaged and unbranded), and
jaggery will be exempt from any GST, while
sugar, tea, coffee (except instant), and edible oil
will be taxed at 5%.
Common use items such as soap, toothpaste, and
hair oil, which currently attract a tax rate of 22-
24%, will be taxed at 18%. Coal, which is

currently taxed at 11.7%, will attract a GST rate
of 5%.
Consumer durables will come under the 28% tax
bracket, down from the current 30-32% rate.
Capital goods and industrial intermediaries will
be taxed at 18%.
Small petrol and diesel cars will be taxed at 28%
with small petrol cars attracting a cess of 1% and
small diesel cars 3%.
Luxury cars will attract a 15% cess in addition to
28% GST.
350 cc bikes will attract a cess of 3%.
25% of new bank branches to be opened in rural
areas: RBI
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has mandated that
25 per cent of the total number of 'banking outlets'
opened during a financial year should be located in
unbanked rural centres.
The RBI mandated this in its notification
"Rationalisation of Branch Authorisation
Policy- Revision of Guidelines".
"Domestic scheduled commercial banks (other
than RRBs) are permitted to open, unless
otherwise specifically restricted, banking outlets
in tier 1 to tier 6 centres without having the need
to take permission from RBI in each case," the
central bank said in the notification.
According to the revised policy, RBI has defined
“a banking outlet” for a scheduled commercial,
a payments bank or a small finance bank as a
fixed point service delivery unit, manned by
either the bank’s staff or its business
correspondent, where services of acceptance of
deposits, encashment of cheques, cash
withdrawal or lending of money are provided for
a minimum of 4 hours per day for at least five
days a week”.
Those outlets which do not meet this criteria will
be called “part-time banking outlet.”

India to grow at 7.7% in 2018-19: IMF
India’s growth is expected to rebound to 7.2% in the
2017-18 fiscal and 7.7% in 2018-19 after disruptions
caused by demonetisation, the IMF said.
According to the report, growth in Asia is

India to grow 7.5% next year on higher infra
spending, says UN
The Indian economy will grow 7.5 per cent next year
by virtue of consumption revival and higher
infrastructure spending, says a report by the UN
Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the
Pacific (ESCAP).
For 2017, India's economic growth is projected
stable at 7.1 per cent before catapulting to 7.5 per
cent going into the next year, the regional
development arm of the the United Nations said.
While, the Manila-headquartered Asian
Development Bank sees the growth jumping to
7.4 per cent in 2017-18 and 7.6 per cent in the
next.
RBI restricts loss making IDBI Bank from hiring,
opening branches
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has initiated
'prompt corrective action' on IDBI Bank which will
restrict bank from hiring, opening branches and
giving big ticket loans.
The directions from the RBI is aimed at ensuring
that the bank takes measures to cut down its
losses by reducing expenses and recovering
problem loans.
The bank had suffered historic loss of Rs 2,255
crore in the December quarter 2016 as it had to
make huge provisions for bad loans.
The 'prompt corrective action' is triggered when
a bank's bad loan is above 6%, it reports losses
for two consecutive years and it falls short of
minimum capital prescribed by the regulator.

Sebi allows subscription to MF schemes through
e-wallets
Securities markets regulator Sebi on 8 May
permitted subscription to mutual fund (MF) schemes
through e-wallets.
"With an objective to promote digitalisation,
MFs/AMCs (mutual funds/asset management
companies) can accept investment by an investor
through e-wallets, prepaid payment instruments
(PPIs)," Sebi said in a circular.

RBI puts restriction on Uco Bank's business
Reserve Bank of India has put restriction on Uco
Bank’s lending and branch expansion plans as the
state-run lender made net losses for the two
successive fiscal amid severe stress on asset quality.
There would be check on management
compensation and directors’ fees as well as the
sector regulator has invoked prompt corrective
action (PCA) for the bank, aiming to bring it
back on recovery path.
Uco has become the second lender to face
business restrictions after IDBI Bank after RBI
revised its PCA framework last month.
Base year of WPI, IIP revised to 2011-12
The government has revised the base year of
wholesale price index (WPI) and index of industrial
production (IIP) to 2011-12 from 2004-05.
WPI has been changed six times so far since

The SBI has bifurcated or separated its operations in

Cabinet clears Ordinance to tackle NPA

• The amendments could give the RBI an
explicit mandate to intervene on behalf of
state-owned banks when deciding on how to
deal with NPAs.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was
nominated by the Government of Ethiopia, and
will begin his five-year term on 1 July 2017.
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus will succeed
Dr Margaret Chan, who has been WHO’s
Director-General since 1 January 2007.
He will be the first health official from Africa to
serve as director-general.
Tedros is a former health and foreign affairs
minister from Ethiopia.

WHO honours Health Minister Nadda with

Union Health Minister J P Nadda has been honoured
by the World Health Organisation with the Director
General’s Special Recognition Award for his
leadership and commitment to advancing tobacco
control,
Health ministers of Maldives and Bhutan were
also among five individuals and institutions
from the WHO South-East Asia Region for this
year’s World No-Tobacco Day Award.
Nadda is also among the two recipients of the

Constantine Mitsotakis, Former Prime Minister
of Greece, Dies at 98
Constantine Mitsotakis, a former conservative prime
minister who engaged in fierce confrontations with
Greece’s liberal and socialist parties and tried to
political career, died on May 29. He was 98.
Mr. Mitsotakis was prime minister from 1990 to
1993.
He retired from active politics in 2004 but
remained honorary chairman of the center-right

Noted director and former Union Minister, Dasari
Narayana Rao breathed his last at a corporate
hospital. He was 75.
Dasari Narayana Rao directed 151 movies and

He holds Limca World Record for directing the
most number of films.
Dasari was elected to the Rajya Sabha in the

Actor Reema Lagoo passes away
Veteran actor Reema Lagoo, known for her

Mathunny Mathews popularly known as ‘Toyota’

passed away at his residence in Qadisiya in Kuwait.
He was 81.
Mathews had played a key role in the safe
evacuation of 1.7 lakh Indian nationals from the
Emirate after Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi forces
invaded Kuwait in 1990.
He came to be known as ‘Toyota’ Sunny
following his life-long association with the
leading automobile dealer Al-Sayer Group.
Mathunny Mathews was the inspiration for
‘Airlift’, a Bollywood movie in which Akshay

Renowned Pakistani sitarist Ustad Raees Khan has
passed away. He was 77.
Born in Indore in Madhya Pradesh in 1939 into
a family of musicians, Khan collaborated with
legendary shehnai player Ustad Bismillah Khan
on stage.
He also played sitar for film music composers.

Begum Yaman used to sing all forms of Indian
semi-classical music and was probably the only
female singer in India of Sufi style of music in
its purest form.
