A Word from the Pastor
I am just back from a Brennan family reunion in Ireland.
Some of you may remember that I was in Ireland last summer
with two of my sisters to honor the recent death of our father,
Thomas, who died at the age of 96. We had a wonderful visit to
our father’s homeland, and we visited a number of our relatives.
Little did we know that a family reunion was to take place the
following summer. When we returned from Ireland last summer
we received word that the last of my father’s 11 siblings had died
at the age of 95. Since now all 12 were deceased, one of my
cousins, John Byrne, said it was time for a family gathering to
make sure that our family connections remained strong. The
reunion was scheduled for July 12 and 13, 2017; so once again,
two of my sisters, Lori and Maureen, along with Lori’s daughter
Nellie, headed for Ireland.
A little background might be helpful. My grandfather, David,
was one of five boys who immigrated to Rochester, NY, from
County Mayo, Ireland, around 1890. One boy, Tobias, remained
at home; and when he died, David was called home in 1897 to
help on the farm. In 1905, David married my grandmother,
Annie, and they had 12 children, one of whom was my father,
Thomas, born in 1919. In 1936, my father went to England like
many poor Irish seeking employment and a future. When WWII
broke out, my father was conscripted into the British Army and
saw action in North Africa, Italy, and eventually Austria, where
he was part of the occupying forces after the war. It was there, in
Vienna, that my father met my mother, and they were married in
1947 in Klagenfurt, Austria. Once again seeking their fortune,
my parents came to the United States in 1948, to Portland, where
my mother had an uncle. Growing up, we knew little about our
Irish or Austrian relatives. My father had a brother who lived in
Louisiana, and he and his family would occasionally come to
Oregon. My mother’s family remained in Austria.
Since my father came from a family of 12 children, there were
many first cousins, some of whom I met while I was a student in
Rome in the 1970’s. But these cousins all married, and they had
children, and the family was soon scattered all over Europe and
America: in Ireland, England, Scotland, Canada, Spain, and
Germany. The family reunion a couple of weeks ago brought
together over 100 relatives, many of us meeting for the first time.
I had often wondered about my family, whether we looked alike,
whether our personalities were similar, and whether we could
hold together as a family despite our broad dispersion. Well, the
reunion answered many of those questions and gave hope that
the next generation of Brennans will indeed hold together. Most
of the first and second cousins are now united on Facebook, with
lively exchanges. As they say, blood is thicker than water, and
that gives hope for the future. I feel lucky to belong to such a
large and interesting family!

must be a culture of leisure as gratifica-
tion. To put it another way: people who
work must take the time to relax, to be
with their families, to enjoy themselves,
read, listen to music, play a sport.
