CitiesVietnam’s rapid urbanisation is driving the need for innovative and sustainable solutions due to the increasing challenges posed by economic development, climate change, and population growth.

From the tallest tower to the deepest basement in Ho Chi Minh City, Arup delivered some of Vietnam’s most iconic projects. Arup has also participated in building resilience in major cities, and continues to offer sustainable masterplans, resilient solutions, as well as total design and engineering for various developments.

We shape a better world

Vietnam experienceArup has been working in Vietnam since the 1980s, and in 2008 we established a local operation in Ho Chi Minh City. Our knowledge of global standards and local regulations and codes ensures the quality and smooth delivery of projects.

We have a track record of excellence in private and public sectors in the country. Our portfolio includes the country’s tallest building Landmark 81, the iconic National Convention Centre in Hanoi and the Van Don Integrated Resort located in Quang Ninh. We also advised the government of Ninh Thuan Province to develop a strategic masterplan for the province’s sustainable development.

Total design in the digital age Arup draws upon skills and capabilities from diverse disciplines to seek ever better ways to imagine, design and shape a better built environment.

Engineering is central to human progress – almost nothing is invented without it – and our founder, Sir Ove Arup, was an extraordinary engineer who was deeply concerned with that progress. His vision for the role of engineering in design and of design in engineering was shaped by humanistic, rather than simply technical, principles. This breadth of vision has inspired generations to pursue the art and science of Total Design in our firm.

The purpose of the firm founded by Ove has remained constant over the ensuing 70 years. Today, by uniting design, engineering and technology under the ‘Total Design’ philosophy, we continue to transform and shape a better world.

Restructuring bus network in HanoiWe are working with the World Bank providing transport advisory services including bus network planning and accessibility analysis as part of their significant infrastructure improvement scheme in Hanoi. We are helping to identify the highest priority corridors for near-term implementation and will restructure the bus network to better complement the bus rapid transit system and planned metro lines to provide an efficient feeder system.

Empire City MU 4, 7, 8, Ho Chi Minh CityArup provided multidisciplinary design services for the first plots of the development – luxury residences accommodated in a mix of medium-rise towers and shop houses. Working in a predominantly international team, Arup delivered a sophisticated engineering solution which contributed to one of the most sought-after developments in the City.

Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network (ACCCRN) Our work with the Rockefeller Foundation has led to the creation of the ACCCRN, a network that spans India, Vietnam, Thailand, Bangladesh, Philippines and Indonesia. We are working in over 20 cities to generate practical examples of how cities in fast urbanising, low and middle-income countries, can build urban resilience to the various impacts of climate change. Ultimately, this initiative will help catalyse action within cities to build climate change resilience, and influence funding streams towards this agenda.

Times Square, Ho Chi Minh CityThe 164m tall building houses a five-star hotel, top quality serviced apartments, office facilities and retail space. Arup carried out total design on the project – including architecture and SMEP services – working with the Client to enhance an original design to increase its efficiency and effectiveness, while also reducing construction cost.

Vincom Building, Ho Chi Minh CityThe building comprises 26 floors of office and residential space. Within the podium levels are retail and commercial activities and the first three levels of the six-storey basement are dedicated for retail. The remaining basement levels are for car park. The building features the deepest basement construction in Vietnam, in what is some of the most challenging soil conditions throughout the country.

National Exhibition Centre, HanoiThe new National Exhibition Centre is the centerpiece of a 128ha multi-function cultural complex in Hanoi. The design of the 180,000m² main building resembles an open lotus – Vietnam’s national flower, featuring 110m long column-free exhibition space formed by prismatic steelwork trusses.

Hong River bulk water supply project, HanoiTo provide safe drinking water for Hanoi’s ever-expanding population, Arup’s water experts are working on one of the city’s largest ever water infrastructure projects. It will see the construction of a major new surface water treatment plant capable of extracting and processing 300,000m3 per day from the Hong River. The project also includes18 km of large diameter transmission mains that will connect to the city’s drinking water distribution network.

Fulbright University Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh CityFulbright University Vietnam is the country’s first independent, nonprofit institution of higher education. Designed by SHoP Architects, the first development phase of the flagship campus is now under construction in Saigon High Tech Park, with the aim to provide a new home for students by 2022. Arup delivered multidisciplinary services for both the masterplan and technical design via our offices in New York City and Ho Chi Minh City.

Van Don Integrated Resort, Quang NinhThe Van Don Integrated Resort is one of the first large-scale casino developments in Vietnam with a GFA of 185,000m². The project, including three hotels and ancillary facilities, is located on a currently-undeveloped site. Arup delivered multidisciplinary design solutions to achieve the ambitious fast-track construction programme.

Ninh Thuan MasterplanArup worked as the first international consultant to develop a strategic masterplan for Ninh Thuận province in the South Central Coast region. Our integrated approach targets the sustainable development of social, economic and environmental aspects, including economic integration, quality of life and infrastructure, ecosystems and heritage, clean energy and climate change resilience.

Friendship Tower, Ho Chi Minh CityLocated in the centre of Ho Chi Minh City, the Friendship Tower is a LEED certified Grade-A office building with high-level flexibility in configuration. Arup designed MEP solutions for the 21-storey tower, including a centralised chilled water system and a 2000kVA diesel generator system.

Ho Chi Minh City MRT Line 2MRT Line 2 will be approximately 10.6km long with 11 stations and a 1.1km link to a new depot with 12 three-car trains to operate the line. The line will facilitate public transport connectivity and access in six central districts of the city, as well as being an integral part of the public urban transport system to support the Urban Transport Masterplan. Arup supported the Management Authority of Urban Railways to ensure sufficient management and technical expertise in the procurement of consultancy services.

Westlake Iconic Towers, HanoiArup has been working alongside a team of international consultants providing structural and geotechnical engineering services to bring the sophisticated mixed-use development to the shores of the West Lake in Hanoi. With a GFA of 295,000m2, the development comprises 9 towers ranging from 16 to 40 storeys with an elevated skybridge that links the two tallest towers at the upper level.

Vinpearl Wheel, Nha TrangVinpearl Wheel, the largest Ferris wheel in Vietnam is also recognised as one of the ten highest wheels in the world. Arup carried out the foundation design of the wheel to suit geologically challenging conditions. The project was successfully delivered within eight months through an accelerated design and construction programme.

Hoiana Integrated Resort, Hoi AnThe tourism development of Hoiana is expected to comprise seven phases in the Central Coastal region of Vietnam. Arup has been providing various consultancy services for the phase one development, including an integrated resort complex with entertainment, retail and residential areas, as well as associated civil infrastructure.

Cao Lãnh BridgeThe cable-stayed bridge is 650m long with 350m main span over the Tien River, forms part of the Central Mekong Delta Region Connectivity Project. It is designed to improve the road system that traverses the Mekong Delta Region to the west of Ho Chi Minh City. Arup provided independent analysis and professional advice for the river crossing as a constructive third party.

Waste to energy facility feasibility study, Da NangTogether with the Asian Development Bank, Arup has been working on a feasibility study to assess technical options and review the financial model of a proposed waste to energy facility, looking into the public-private partnership (PPP) framework as a way of deploying private sector capital and know-how expeditiously.

Urban transport improvement project for Ho Chi Minh CityWe carried out improvement works along three strategic road corridors with a total length of 22km, and improved 200 junctions with a new traffic circulation arrangement for a central city area covering 5km2. We were also responsible for the design, specification and preparation of documentation for international tender in accordance with the World Bank procedures for the Area Traffic Control system.
