Leveraging our worldwide network, we draw upon global resources and expertise to solve problems requiring any specialist skills in the Philippines.

On the cover St Francis Shangri-La Place, Pasig CityThe highest residential development in the Philippines standing at 217m. To reinforce the structure, the building used the Arup Damped Outrigger System, a series of revolutionary viscous dampers, which act as energy absorbers dampening vibrations.

East La Mesa Water Treatment Plant, Quezon CityThe water treatment plant has a capacity of 150,000m3/day plus a 40,000m3 storage reservoir. Using new intake structures in La Mesa, the plant provides clean water to more than 1 million residents in Metro Manila. Arup undertook a feasibility study and reference design for the plant, significantly optimising the site arrangements to provide longer term operational efficiency. We also project managed the work through the design and construction period.

Grand Hyatt Metrocenter, Taguig CitySoaring at 226m, the 66-storey office and hotel development will be the tallest mixed-use complex in the country. This building houses the Grand Hyatt hotel with a high-end residential tower adjacent to it. It employs Arup’s Damped Outrigger System which reduces wind and earthquake induced sway vibrations in tall buildings. The concrete outrigger walls are built into the Hyatt’s two mechanical floors in order to optimise structural size and leave more space for aesthetic design.

Glorietta Redevelopment District Cooling System, Makati CityArup helped the client to deliver the first District Cooling System in the Philippines which aims to tackle fuel poverty and promote local economic development through renewable and energy efficient technologies. We looked into system efficiency between centralised and decentralised chiller plants, and reviewed different schemes by integrating on-site renewable technologies such as CHP and solar thermal energy.

Shangri-La Boracay Resort & Spa, AklanWith 36 villas and suites, the 12ha development is one of the first five-star international resorts on Boracay Island. Arup was responsible for the geotechnical, civil and structural design of this project. As the resort is located in and around natural habitat of interesting and rare wildlife species, Arup performed site investigation and geotechnical assessment to identify areas of construction with minimum impact on the lush hillside surroundings.

Malampaya Concrete Gravity Structure, Offshore PalawanConstructed in a purpose built casting basin at Subic Bay and installed in 43m of water 80km west of Palawan Island. The Malampaya Concrete Gravity Substructure was designed and installed to service Malampaya Deep Water Gas to Power Project for the Philippines - the first of its kind in South East Asia. Involved from the project outset including initial feasibility studies and a Front End Engineering Design (FEED), multidisciplinary teams from Arup worked closely with alliance members to ensure project success.

Transaction advice on investing into a local utility firmWe worked with an overseas investor to look into the viability of buying into a major local utility. To help the client understand the related and commercial risks, we undertook a technical due diligence study of the utilities management structure, operational assets and capital project portfolio. We assessed the delivery against international and regional standards and identified key risks that needed to be managed moving forwards. Our recommendations were accepted by the investor’s board.
