It’s a little bit country. It’s a little bit rock ‘n’ roll. It’s a little bit Broadway, jazz, bluegrass, and some Mozart andBeethoven thrown in for good measure.

In 2019-2020, the Springfield Symphony is exploring the music of America. We’re painting a musical portrait ofour nation. We’re traveling our backroads and byways and our rivers and mountains with music that celebratesour great cities, our small towns, and our national parks. We’re examining our history, telling our stories, andsinging our songs. In music old and new, we will hear the spirit of America as it echoes across the miles andyears.

From a new oratorio that raises the voices of the Civil War to the jazz of Gershwin’s New York, from bluegrassfiddling to the Broadway of Rodgers and Hammerstein, and from purple mountain majesties to our gritty andbustling cities, we will hear America’s playlist. We will make music from the new world as we create asoundtrack worthy of our history and celebrating our world today.

Debbie Criswell was born in the American south in Columbus, Georgia in 1967. At 15years old, Debbie moved to a small farm in Fordland, Missouri where she found mostof her inspiration for her art. She was surrounded by many Amish farms and lovedpainting old fashioned farming scenes, with subject matter that included horses, cats, dogs and children playing. Debbie is a 100% self-taught artist and has beenpainting professionally since 2002. She currently resides in Florida where shecontinues to create wonderful art everyday. While living in New York, Czech composer Antonin Dvořák became interested in NativeAmerican music and African-American spirituals. His Symphony No. 9 - From theNew World, is a thrilling and poignant synthesis of American folk and indigenousmelodies woven into the traditional Western symphonic structure and is one of themost popular masterworks in the orchestral repertoire. We will introduce our audienceto Joan Tower’s Grammy Award-winning composition Made in America, which weavesAmerica the Beautiful into an intriguing and haunting tone poem. And in a nod to the“old world,” we will hear Beethoven’s delightful and charming Violin Concerto, performed by our very own Concertmaster David Hays.

Mozart’s music has been used to sell

cars, Nikes, pancakes, instant

coffee, iPods, cable service—even

dog food. It has appeared in such

wide-ranging films as Batman, Alien,

The Shawshank Redemption, Elvira

Madigan, The Bonfire of the Vanities,

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and

There’s Something About Mary,

among countless others. Mozart has

proved his enduring power not only in

the concert hall but in how many

times his music has been used in pop

culture. This concert will feature

Mozart’s pieces that have taken on a

new life in American popular culture

and are familiar to everyone, even

those who have never set foot in a

concert hall.

We are pleased to present a powerful new oratorio by

Missouri composer Stefan Freund, The War Amongst

Families and Neighbors: The Civil War in Missouri.

This moving, large-scale work for orchestra, chorus,

and soloists includes Civil War-era songs, as well as

letters, editorials, and battle reports. We will be

joined by local university choirs and soloists for

this work that will bring alive the voices from this tragic chapter in

Missouri’s history.
