A COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE AFRICAN UNION AND THEGOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH

FOREWORD BY MINISTER OF ARTS AND CULTUREHON. NATHI MTHETHWA

THROUGHOUT the ages, culture has beena powerful force to bring us together and, ironically, to tear us apart. But over the years, we have learned to acknowledge and recognize its pivotal role in nation building, social cohesion and promoting better relations among people of the continent.

In fact, we have launched African Month – Festival of Ideas & Cultural Exchange to assert the role of artists and other cultural practitioners as the custodians of the soul of nations in the African continent. It is for that reason that we are proud to host the 4th Pan African Cultural Congress (PACC) in collaboration with the African Union for Social Affairs. This happens at a crucial time when South Africa celebrates 21 years of democracy and freedom.

We need to acknowledge and recognize that culture always has been and always will be an important instrument to build a united African continent that stretches from Cape to Cairo. The theme for this very important conference, Unity in Cultural Diversity for Africa’s Development is intuitively linked to the theme of the Africa Month festival of ideas and cultural exchange, that is, African Unity to promote peace and friendship from Cape to Cairo.

At present all African artists are called upon to mirror the soul of the continent in the fight against all forms of prejudice and stereotypes. It is through culture that we are able to articulate and reflect the wishes and aspirations of the peoplefor a united continent. Thus the 4th PACC provides a platform for intellectuals, academics and cultural practitioners from different backgrounds to explore issues of a common African identity. We believe culture can strengthen the ties that bind us. Essentially, it is intended to foster self-love and pride among the people of the continent.

As South Africa marks the beginning of the third decade of democracy and freedom towards radical economic transformation, we are proud to host this significant cultural conference.

For us, the 4th PACC is a bonus to the plethora of platforms to display and celebrate the best of African creative talent. It is in this context that South Africa has ratified the Charter for African Cultural Renaissance. In fact, we believe through this tool, we all can promote Pan–Africanism, cultural renewal and identity to champion the African Agenda. It is part of the efforts to create a better South Africa in a better Africa and thus ‘give the world a human face.’

For us, it is no accident that the Charter is strongly aligned to, the National Development Plan, the revisions to the White Paper on Arts, Culture and Heritage and the Mzansi Golden Economy Strategy.

As we celebrate Africa Month in the context of 21 years of democracy and freedom, let us be reminded of the important role that was played by the African Union and African states in the struggle for liberation in South Africa.

We are proud that the African Union first met on South African soil.

To support the implementation of South Africa’s work on the Charter, we have dedicated the entire month of May in 2015 to Africa Month henceforward. This is a month long festival of ideas and cultural exchange that features various arts and culture disciplines including Music, Literature, Dance, Literature, Film, Fashion, Crafts, Theatre, Visual Arts, Panel Discussions and Food Culture amongst others.

This, of course, also included the 4th PACC and a series of dialogues and seminars in a festival of ideas to forge African unity.

We are delighted that the people of Africa and the world are gathered in South Africa during this Africa Month as we take the celebration of Africa Day into greater heights. We believe that in this way we shall remain true to the vision of the Africa Agenda 2063.

God bless Africa!

FOREWORD BY H.E. DR MUSTAPHA SIDIKI KALOKO, AU COMMISSIONER FOR SOCIAL AFFAIRS

The African Continent is endowed with rich cultural diversity. Our knowledge, experiences, beliefs, rich cultural heritage, traditions and

shared-values form part of our unique cultural identity and self- definition. This unique cultural identity contributes to shaping the world we live in. As societies evolve, each individual contributes in diverse ways

to enrich our lives through the diversity of his/her culture.

Our commitment to promote and galvanize our cultural diversity is a pre-requisite to building a peaceful and prosperous Africa as well laying the foundations for an enabling environment for peace and stability and development in Africa and the world at large.

The African Union Agenda 2063, as the aspiration for the Africa we want in 2063, stresses the need to build a strong cultural identity, common heritage, shared values and ethics. This should be guided and inspired by the Pan-Africanspirit, our common history, destiny, heritage, respect for religious diversity and consciousness of African peoples at home and in the Diaspora.

The 4th Pan-African Cultural Congress (PACC4) is organized under the theme: “Unity and Diversity for Africa’s Development”, and it is taking place a few days after the celebrations marking the World Day for Cultural Diversity and Development on 21st May 2015. Let us join the world to dialogue on the ways and means to maximize our diversity as an essential instrument

for Africa’s development.

The dialogue on cultural diversity is higher on the international agenda and is critical for human security and a prime responsibility of our time. Let us use this auspicious moment and opportunity to contribute to this important dialogue with the hope of taking action to enhance peaceful cultural coexistence on the continent.

WE ARE AFRICA - CULTURAL PRGRAMME

The Pan African Congress gala dinner cultural programme is essentially variety show that celebrates Africa Month and underpins the narrative of Africa Unite For peace, friendship, development and prosperity from Cape to Ciaro.

This cultural manisfestation is sensitively choreographed < staged> through a series of stylized dance and performance metaphors that we hope will take our audience on a m journey of internalizing key messages heralding the true meaning of African Unity and Diversity through its foremost cultural expression music and dance. The project is a collaborative effort of South African and performers from West Africa, Senegal, Nigeria, Mozambique and the Mali.

Page 4: Web viewMokoena studied classical music playing the clarinet and flute at UNISA, Royal School of Music, Johannesburg Orchestra,

The music and dance sequences are timeless as they borrow from ancient anthems and folk music and modern urban Afri-pop and the Victor Ntoni jazz big band and chorus voices. This programme celebrates in many ways the essence and meaning to the importance of Africa Day, its origins present day relevance to-today African cultural expressions – it is therefore important that it should raise our consciousness through higher aesthetic creation but on the whole become an accesible feast of exuberant cultural ‘dikosha’ of music and dance celebration.

South African dance choreographer Greg Maqoma has put together a joyful programme that interweaves African dance forms throws excerpts from the Vuyani Dance Theatre work of extraordinary depth – weaving through the valleys and mountains of Africa in search of the Rain Queen.A metaphor of hope – The search of the Rain Queen sees us travel through the continent to release us from famine, disease and war. The Rain Queen is the symbol of hope, it is believed that that her discovery will bring back fertility, prosperity and unity within the continent of Africa. The Rain Dance is an African Song and Dance that will provide healing to the souls and bring a better understanding and appreciation of our own cultures and traditions.interlocked with jazz harmonies and voices of the Gauteng Music Development driven by Victor Ntoni’s repertoire under watchful eye and baton of Prince Lengoasa who has arranged most the music. The ensemble pays homage to its founder, Victor Ntoni, the late composer, arranger and contra bassist. The repetoitre is a retrospective from the South African song book incorporating the work of John Knox Bokwe’s Ntsikana’s Hym – JP Mohapeloa, Tymzashe and Moerane.

.The performance would not be complete without the participation of Mozambique’s new voice of African soul Isabella Novela’s sometimes egregious haunting melodies that bear witness to the new music out of Maputo but unmistakably pan-African beyond borders. The Princess of Africa Yvonne Chaka and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador graces this occasion her presence and her music symbolizes somebody who has for years made African Unity her primary motive and tour de force.

The 2015 World Music Grammy and SAMA award winner Wouter Kellerman joins the posse with a homecoming celebration of Winds of Samsara.

The anchor and driver of this programme is none other but Tumi Morake . Our script is tight but not tedious brings to the fore South Africa’s madam comedian par excellence . She comperes this program but holds no buts nor over the-top and seriousness as she gets her audience into stitches drives home the message of We Are Africa!.
