Student profile
Charlotte Baines PhD
In November 2008 Charlotte Baines was
elected as a councillor on the City of
Monash for a second term. She was also
elected Deputy Mayor at the age of 26. After
achieving a first class honours degree in Arts
(Sociology) and Law, Charlotte decided to
undertake a PhD in sociology. “I am studying
sociology because I am fascinated with the
study of society, and the way governments
represent religious interests. I particularly
want to learn how religion and state
relations can be improved under the Rudd
Labor Government. In Australia, politicians
and researchers are still learning how to get
the balance right. In the future I hope to use
my research to stimulate public debate on
the role of religion in federal politics, and
to improve the representation of religious
interests in policy and law.”

Student profile
Felix NobisPhD
“Having come to tertiary education quite
late, I had already established some
professional and personal interests
that would define my research. I began
undergraduate studies as a mature-age
student at University College Cork, Ireland.
Combining my professional interest in
performance with an academic interest in
history and language, I went on to write an
MA in medieval theatre.
I had worked several years as a professional
actor, increasingly in the field of storytelling,
and saw a unique opportunity to combine
my professional and academic experience in
the form of a PhD in medieval storytelling.
I chose Monash because it offered a
balance between the academic and
the practical sides of performance. I
was accepted on a Teaching-Research
scholarship and have been able to develop
my teaching skills while also receiving
the financial benefits of being a part-
time staff member. Certainly one of the
greatest considerations of full-time study
is financial. Over the last two years I have
twice interrupted my research to pursue
professional engagements. On both
occasions however, I have been able to
incorporate the professional work into my
research.
I enjoy the vibrant atmosphere in the Centre
for Drama and Theatre Studies. I enjoy
working with the students, and sharing that
balance between research and practice. For
me they are as important as each other, and
it is a balance I will seek to maintain after
graduation.”

Student profile
Sarah Pasfield-NeofitouPhD
After completing a Bachelor of Arts degree
in 2005, Sarah completed an honours year
and is now working on a PhD. Her honours
thesis was on language learners’ use of
internet chat and it was while researching
that Sarah uncovered a number of areas
she wanted to explore in more detail. This,
combined with the excellent supervision she
received, encouraged her to pursue a PhD.
In her current research, Language Use in
Internet Mediated Communication, Sarah
is exploring how students use a number
of internet tools in their second language,
and how this participation online impacts
their language learning. Part of her research
also involves the use of emoticons in text
messaging and the ways in which these and
abbreviations have crept into modern day
speech.
Sarah works as a sessional tutor at Monash
and enjoys the fact that she can gain
teaching experience in her area of interest
while studying.
She says the most rewarding thing
about doing a PhD is working in a field
that she is interested in, and developing
as a researcher within an exciting and
encouraging academic community.

Student profile
Marilyn JohnsonPhD
A keen interest in learning all she could
about research, coupled with a desire to
build skills that would allow her to work as
an active, collaborative researcher, were key
influences in Marilyn Johnston’s decision
to enrol in a Masters of Applied Social
Research at Monash.
Working full-time while studying presented
challenges but Marilyn attributes the
standard of excellence she achieved in her
course to extensive online resources, in
particular journal subscriptions, and the high
calibre of teaching staff.
“They understood the demands of time
management but they didn’t compromise
too much – they had high expectations and
confidence in my ability to produce excellent
work.”
Following her Masters, Marilyn worked
for the Parliament of Victoria as principal
researcher for the Inquiry into Pedestrian
Safety tabled in Parliament in 2006 and then
as a researcher with the Ethics Committee
in the Department of Justice.
She is the inaugural recipient of the Amy
Gillett Foundations’ Safe Family Research
Scholarship which has allowed her to return
to study as a full-time PhD student at the
Monash University Accident Research
Centre where she is working on ways to
improve cycling safety through a better
understanding of the interaction between
cyclists and other road users.

Graduate profile
Danny EdwardsBioethics
“I work as a policy manager at the Human
Fertilisation and Embryology Authority in
the UK. The HFEA is responsible for both
regulating and developing policy around
fertility technology and embryology.
A major part of the work I am involved in is
as a member of the secretariat of the Ethics
and Law Advisory Group at the HFEA.
As part of this work I recently presented
a paper regarding the ethical and public
interest issues that may arise during the
licensing of research involving genetically
modified human embryos.
When I first decided to take on postgraduate
study in bioethics this was exactly the sort of
career I had in mind. There’s an increasing
demand for bioethics graduates in the
health policy arena – in my department
alone there are five of us with Masters (or
pending Masters) in bioethics or health law
and medical ethics degrees.”

Graduate profile
Peter SawczakSlavic Studies
“My career path in the Department of
Foreign Affairs and Trade began at the
Australian Embassy in Moscow as Third
Secretary. The solid grounding in Russian
and Ukrainian language, literature and
culture that I acquired at Monash proved
indispensable in the complicated operating
environment of the former Soviet republics.
I’m currently on posting in Washington as
Political Counsellor, dealing mainly with
disarmament and non-proliferation issues.
Prior to this, I served in Brussels,
a challenging multilateral setting that hosts
the European institutions and NATO.
As widely as English is spoken, these
institutions continue to advocate pluralism.
Being able to speak German and French
proved invaluable, both personally and
professionally.
I had such fond memories of my time at
Monash that I took a mid-career break
from international arms control issues to
complete a PhD there on the nineteenth-
century author Nikolai Gogol.
Knowing one or more foreign languages
makes learning others easier. It also makes
different cultures and ways of thinking more
accessible – a vital advantage in the field
of diplomacy. The Department of Foreign
Affairs and Trade values language skills
highly – skills that Monash’s School of LCL
has a well-earned reputation for instilling in
its students.”

Graduate profile
Claire BaddeleyMaster of Arts (Museum Studies and Material Culture)
“The course consisted of course work and a
thesis, and was very interesting, stimulating
and diverse, providing a thorough and
broad-ranging knowledge, and offering
something for everyone, depending on
where your interests lay.
We had an interesting mix of guest
speakers/lecturers during the course from
within the University and externally and a
fieldtrip to Tasmania to visit many museums
and historic houses. Our supervisor was
very knowledgeable, looked after each of
her students and had a genuine interest in
our thesis topics, providing personalised
support and feedback on a regular basis.
After graduating from Monash, I was
appointed W R Griffiths Curatorial Assistant
at the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery and went
on to become Deputy Director, Public
Programs and Collections at the same
gallery. Returning to Melbourne, I worked
at the Melbourne Museum and undertook
a number of short-term contracts with arts
organisations before moving to Canberra in
2001 for the position of Curator, Art Section,
at the Australian War Memorial.”
