MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT & CEO CHRISTI SALAMONE

2015/16: A Changing Landscape

As the cornerstone of La Quinta Arts Foundation programming, La Quinta Arts Festival is certainly worthy of its many accolades — especially having commanded the Number One position on the national listings of fine art rankings for three straight years (2013, 2014, 2015). La Quinta Arts Festival 2016 was no exception – and it deserves high praise for continuing to be the catalyst and fuel in the creation of hundreds of success stories for artists and students alike. The sum of these achievements endorses LQAF’s continuing leadership role in the Coachella Valley’s arts and culture scene. Highlights: Initiated in 2014/15, LQAF’s salute to

American Craft Week grew from seven community partners to ten in its second year.

The Community Art Gallery was a new programming initiative in 2015/16 presented in partnership with the City of La Quinta, and Corporate Sponsor Rabobank in which three public art gallery exhibitions were installed at La Quinta City Hall running in succession from September 2015 through June 2016.

Celebrated by artists and patrons alike, Art Under the Umbrellas at Old Town La Quinta retained its status as the Coachella Valley’s most popular series of “Fun, Free, & Fabulous” Saturday art shows.

LQAF Visual Art Scholarship Awards reached a total of $1,190,002 to local students pursuing college degrees in the arts.

Over 120 local students benefited from LQAF student tours at La Quinta Arts Festival.

LQAF provided exposure and professional earning opportunities for 500 working visual and performing artists.

Since 1982, La Quinta Arts Foundation has enabled artists' livelihoods and nurtured their creative pursuits. We have supported students with classroom instruction, art experiences, and financial assistance. Each year, we engage over 50,000 Coachella Valley residents and visitors as active participants with enriching cultural programs and opportunities to join with family, friends and neighbors to give back and be part of a thriving society. The 2015/16 year in review, while very successful, was pivotal for La Quinta Arts Foundation. For each of the past two fiscal years, and for the upcoming 2016/17 season, La Quinta Arts Foundation was given Notice to Vacate Certain Parking Facilities by the City of La Quinta to make way for the Villas at Old Town development. Both past years, LQAF was granted a reprieve when development plans experienced delays. As Coachella Valley cities look to revenue generating alternatives from developer fees, transient occupancy tax and sales tax, to offset the loss of their Redevelopment Agency funds, it is clearly not a ‘business as usual’ environment. Continuing to present La Quinta Arts Festival at La Quinta Civic Center Campus does not align with La Quinta’s expansion vision, and, faced with budget shortfalls, it is likely the City’s financial support will be withdrawn or reduced. A November 2016 ballot initiative for a 1% sales tax increase, uncertainty of parking, lack of infrastructure, escalating production and

promotion costs, and competition for community support, resources and volunteers makes it challenging to continue producing successful events on the scale of La Quinta Arts Festival and Art Under the Umbrellas. For the past several years we have adequately adapted to the changing landscape, however, a year-to-year approach to address these looming issues is not a viable or visionary strategy. Thus the staff and board of directors are working to shape LQAF’s future, remaining committed to our mission of Promoting and Cultivating the Arts. Since 2007, LQAF has been involved with thought leaders of the Coachella Valley arts and culture community examining the needs of our region’s creative sector. These efforts resulted in a strongly expressed desire to organize and formalize toward increased advocacy, collaboration, and resource development for the creative sector. The Greater Palm Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau also recognized the vital role the creative sector plays in our region’s tourism economy. As a result, LQAF and CVB entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to advance the imperatives identified by the arts community, leading to the formation of an affiliated nonprofit, California Desert Arts Council (CDAC) in December 2015. Embracing the opportunity to serve our mission of promoting and cultivating the arts in an expanded capacity, CDAC will unify, promote and empower the arts and culture communities in the Coachella Valley region. As the valley continues to grow, it will be critical to create and sustain infrastructure and participatory support for the arts. Building and retaining a creative workforce will be vital to the valley’s lifeblood tourism industry. LQAF and CDAC have critical and prominent roles to play in the implementation of these efforts. We are counting on our loyal supporters to embrace the important work to come – we are up to the task! Our utmost gratitude is extended to the City of La Quinta, Corporate Sponsor Rabobank, as well as our loyal members, volunteers, sponsors, artists, local business, civic and charitable organizations and so many community partners who all join together to contribute dollars, goods, services and effort to ensure our continued success.

On behalf of the board of directors, I am pleased to present the La Quinta Arts Foundation Annual Review 2015/16.

As evidenced by our consistent presence at the top of fine arts listings, La Quinta Arts Festival is truly a world-class event. La Quinta Arts Festival is firmly established as a premier destination for arts and culture, primarily through our commitment to sustain the superb quality of work and general prestige that its patrons have come to expect from this show year-after-year. La Quinta Arts Festival 2016 proceeded with the same solid formula of aligning with the top artists in the country and affording them the ultimate amenities and opportunities to best showcase their original works of art on a spectacular art festival site to a demographically preferred audience.

Whether a factor of a contentious political climate, a devaluation in the exchange rate of the Canadian Dollar affecting our snowbird population, and somewhat adverse weather conditions, ticket sales (-16%) and art sales (-8%) declined in 2016. However total artist sales still managed to top out at a commendable $2.7 million mark.

By The Numbers Exhibiting artists: 224 artists selected from 1,129 applicants (31% = new applicants); 22 of the invited

artists were new exhibitors — 6% of these had never applied before.

Invited artists represent 35 states, Canada, and Argentina.

Ticket Prices: Single Day $17, Multi-day Pass $22, Children 12 and under free.

Engagement La Quinta Arts Festival is grateful to have the unwavering and continuing support of the greater Coachella Valley community – and we are also fortunate to be able to connect our offerings with cultural patrons from across the nation. Our ability to discern who is engaging with us, where they hail from, and what their interests are – improves each year. Data collected from La Quinta Arts Festival ticket and art purchases reveals 2016 attendees hailed from 44 US states & Washington DC. 44% of art sales recorded to addresses outside of California, while 56% were within California. Of the California purchasers, over 124 cities throughout the Golden State were represented. As usual there was strong participation from our Canadian seasonal residents representing over 4% of attendees.

34TH LA QUINTA ARTS FESTIVAL – MARCH 3-6, 2016

Featured Festival Artist Trés Taylor Trés Taylor’s original painting entitled “Citrus Monk” was commissioned as the image for the La Quinta Arts Festival 2016 commemorative poster. Taylor was the top selling artist at the 2016 Festival. A contemporary mixed media painter living in Birmingham, AL, Trés paints about spiritual seeking, love, Divine Love, peace, and joy. His subjects are usually monks, couples, and houses — but always the subjects are symbols of love. His medium is tarpaper and frequently uses layers of mud, sometimes

Alabama red clay, that give his paintings a rich and yet raw texture. Taylor has exhibited nationally and internationally; his work can be found in several significant collections including Dupont Pioneer of Des Moines, IA; the Hurn Museum of Contemporary Folk Art of Savannah, GA; and is publicly displayed at Children’s of Alabama, a hospital in Birmingham. In October 2014, Trés Taylor created a work to celebrate the historic visit of the Dalai Lama in Birmingham.

Artist Awards Reception La Quinta Arts Festival 2016’s Artist Awards Reception was attended by well over 500 invited guests on the Civic Center Amphitheatre lawn from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. Along with the Festival artists, special invitees to the Awards Reception were LQAF Friends and Patron Members, Home Hosts, Corporate Sponsors, Community Partners, and dignitaries from the City of La Quinta, Premier Sponsor for LQAF events. The awards reception was catered by donations from 12 Featured Festival Restaurants and Festival Sponsors.

ART UNDER THE UMBRELLAS

Art Under the Umbrellas (AUU) October 31 November 14 November 28 January 16 January 23 February 6 February 13 March 19 Art Under the Umbrellas is a series of eight six-hour events held on eight key Saturdays throughout the desert season set along the streets and lawn of Old Town La Quinta. Art Under the Umbrellas continues to be a destination for locals, snowbirds, resorts guests, and day-trip visitors. The free public events that feature over 80 artists, live music, and art demonstrations were attended by at least 25,000 patrons — a conservative estimate based on an average of over 3,000 per event. All parking lots in the Village area were routinely filled to capacity and Old Town’s shops and restaurants saw significant increase in traffic. The exceptional reputation of this show among artists was apparent in the long wait lists in place for each event, with far more applicants than booth spaces available.

AUU Marketing / Featured Artists: To amplify the marketing strategy for Art Under the Umbrellas, different artists were identified to be featured at each show through postings on the LQAF.com website and Facebook, LQAF e-blasts, press releases, and a series of feature articles in Desert Entertainer and Coachella Valley Weekly to accompany paid ads.

AUU 2015/16 Revenue Total art sales of 140 participating artists totaled $749,885 (down 13% from previous year’s sales of $861,899).

AUU Entertainment Entertaining at all events from 11 am to 3 pm were members of The Steve Madaio Band featuring Bobby O’Connor and Horace Miller.

All six of the 2014 ACW La Quinta participants returned to collaborate on the 2015 celebration: La Quinta Museum, La Quinta Historical Society, La Quinta Library, Friends of the La Quinta Library, Old Town Artisan Studio, and S’mart Studio.
