For Manhattan-based fashion designer Mariana Lira, it’s all about making a woman feel beautiful, confident, and of course, sexy. With a focus on evening wear, including cocktail and red carpet, as well as custom made and bridal pieces, the 27-year-old, raised in Southampton, has accomplished quite a lot in her young life. With several high profile fashion shows as close as NYC and as far away as China, plus a successful business, Mariana Valentina, (that she started just a year and a half ago), already under her belt, this young designer is just getting started.

What made you want to be a fashion designer?

I have been a creative person all my life and I wanted to have some kind of outlet to express my feelings and emotions, and so because of my love for the art and fashion world, I started making my own clothes. I started out making pieces only for myself and my friends because I was bored of seeing the same clothing everywhere and watching everyone wear the same thing. I enjoy creating something unique and seductive while keeping a classic yet elegant appeal. There is something mysterious about my work. I think that reflects my personality.

What inspires you? There are a million things that can

Local Designer Takes On World, One Dress At A Time

inspire me- my mood, traveling, the weather, a song, a movie, an art show, the beach, the ocean, my love life.

I was originally inspired by the ballet, which is where I began creating. I danced in a ballet company for many years where I was making my costumes for the performances. This was truly my first inspiration. If I wasn’t designing, I would be dancing.

I’m also motivated by foreign films from the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s. There is something about the way that the films are dramatized with emotion and passion from that time that I love, as well as the costumes and styling.

Being from Southampton, has where you grew up influenced you and your work at all?

Growing up as a child and teenager in Southampton certainly has had an impact on me and my work. I began attending social gatherings and events at a very young age, where I was surrounded by high society people. I was always aware and entertained by what everyone was wearing and what was trending that season. I was also always an hour away from New York City and spent the majority of my time there- I was easily bored during the long winters in Southampton. By the time I was 17 I got an apartment there for myself and began attending school, continued working, and still

visited the Hamptons every summer. My love of the ocean and its calmness away from the city also helps me work.

What is it you want as the end result for your pieces?

What I want for the end result is simple- a beautiful piece of art that is wearable, comfortable, unique, sexy, and timeless that will make a woman feel powerful and confident.

You had shows at Nolcha Fashion Week and recently did a show in China. What were those shows like?

I have put together four collections since I started my business. Since then I have had two runway shows and two presentations as well as several events during fashion week in New York. I also just did a show in China during their fashion week this past December. Showing my collection to such a big audience and watching my creations come to life on the models with the music and the lights is one the most exhilarating feelings I’ve ever had.

What have been some of the main differences you’ve noticed between each show you’ve done?

One of the differences I notice between each show is the audience- it is really important who attends the shows, whether it’s good press, editors, buyers, etc. The models you choose also make a huge difference when putting a show together- you want someone who can show the pieces well and walk confidently- someone who can really “strut it”.

How do you see yourself in the future? What are your goals?

In the future I see myself working from my Atel ier in Paris and continuing to spread my vision and inspiration throughout the world. I want to be sitting in a restaurant in a far away country and watch a beautiful woman walk by me in one of my creations.

Motown yielded some of America’s finest music, and the hippest and most suave cat of all the great performers from that era might well be Smokey Robinson.

The word legend is tossed around too loosely; it should rightfully be reserved for the rare individual whose life influences a generation and who will be remembered forever. Robinson fits the bill.

Born William Robinson, Smokey’s willowy, soulful voice has been a staple on the radio for five decades. He was a natural singer – born to become a star. Though he was a gifted student and star athlete in high school, he formed a doo-wop band early on that became well known in Detroit. By 1955 the Chimes morphed into the Miracles and Robinson was not only the lead singer but produced the band and wrote its material.

Robinson hooked up with an aspiring entrepreneur, Barry Gordy, two years later. Gordy was impressed with Robinson both as a singer and a songwriter; Robinson realized Gordy was a visionary and urged him to start his own record company. Motown Records was born and in 1960 Robinson penned the company’s first release, “Shop Around.” It soared to the top of the charts and Motown, Robinson, and Gordy were off and running.

For the next five years Robinson penned hit after hit for the Miracles including “You Really Got A Hold On Me,” “I Second That Emotion,” and “Tears Of A Clown.” More impressive, he was the house writer for Motown and simultaneously turned out hits for the stable of acts Gordy signed. He wrote “You Beat Me To The Punch”

Today’s Birthday: Smokey Robinson, 1940

and “My Guy” for Mary Wells. He wrote a string of hits for The Temptations including the classic “My Girl” and “Get Ready.” He wrote hits for The Marvelettes and the young Marvin Gaye, who later used Robinson as an inspiration to launch his own writing career.

Robinson continues to tour and record today. He is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and has an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Robinson has published over 4000 songs that have sold over 100 million units.

New To Theaters

Adult World ( R ) The plot, reminiscent of Frances Ha, revolves around a young college poet (Emma Roberts) who becomes obsessed with an obscure older poet (John Cusack). The movie has none of the charm of Ha, and Roberts is no Greta Gerwig. Cusack does his best, but with a character named “Rat” he was doomed to fall short. It’s pretty disheveled and doesn’t really go anywhere.

Coming Soon

300 Rise Of An Empire (R ) The original spawned a new genre, and now the stampede begins: scantily clad muscular men slice and dice the living crap out of each other. Hey, someone’s gotta

do it.

New On DVDEnder’s Game Sci-fi movies are

getting better and better, thanks

to the amazing technology being developed. This effort, ably directed by Gavin (X-Men: Origins) Hood, features old hands Ben Kingsley and Harrison Ford, who ably fight off aliens bent on destroying the world. Young Asa Butterfield, though, is the real hero. Viola Davis co-stars. This is a fun ride for the whole family.

Now Playing

The L ego Mov i e ( PG -13 ) Improbably, it’s a smash. Take the kids, despite the rating. Chris Pratt is the voice of a perfectly ordinary, well, piece of plastic, who gets drafted into an improbable journey to stop an evil tyrant from destroying the world. Yes, think Lord Of The Rings.

Pompei (PG-13) Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil) tries his luck with the old Gladiator theme wherein a slave turned gladiator fights to save his true love. Hint: Mount Vesuvius erupts during the movie. Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix) and Kit Harrington (“Game of Thrones”) star.

Labor Day (Pg-13) This was supposed to be an Oscar vehicle for Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin, but it had to be re-tooled and missed the deadline. Still, the story, about a boy and his mother who take in a stranger, tugs on the emotional heartstrings and the actors perform admirably. In the end, though, the writer/director Jason Reitman (Up In The Air, Juno) dials up the sappiness to overdose level.

Ingredients (serves 6)

1/2 c whole garlic cloves1/3 c olive oil

1 tbsp Dijon mustard1 lb button mushrooms

2 large carrot (peeled and shredded on a box grater)

1 white onion (diced)3 tbsp picked fresh thyme

2 tbsp white balsamic vinegar2 heads of broccoli

1/2 c rolled oats (ground to a flour like consistency in food processor)

1 lemon1 can of chickpeas (drained &

rinsed)1 head of celery (washed trimmed

& diced)1 c cooked brown rice

1 red pepper1 yellow pepper diced

1 c vegetable stock 1 tbsp chili powder1 tbsp ground cumin

salt and pepper to your liking

MethodBegin by placing the garlic cloves

in a small pot with the olive oil. Let that simmer on low heat for about 45 minutes or until the garlic becomes soft and turns a light golden brown color.

Homemade Veggie BurgerBegin peeling the vegetables you

will be dicing, any peels or scraps can go in a small pot filled with two cups of water to make the vegetable stock.

For the broccoli, take a sharp knife and gently run it over the florets basically shaving off the green tops of the broccoli floret then save them for later use. For the stalk of the broccoli, cut it into small pieces and give it a rough dice. When all the vegetables are processed, the garlic is roasted, and the oats are ground we can start cooking.

Take two tbsp of the roasted garlic olive oil and begin to heat it over medium heat in a large sauté pan. Add the onion, celery, peppers and broccoli stalks to the pan and cook over medium heat until the onions become soft and translucent, seasoning as you go.

Add in the rough chopped mushrooms, picked thyme, and seasoning. Cover for five minutes to allow the mushrooms to release some liquid. Stir occasionally.

After five minutes, remove the lid and deglaze the pan with the white balsamic vinegar and the juice from half the lemon. Allow the liquid to reduce by half in the pan then drain the cooked vegetable mixture.

Add the liquid to the vegetable stock and set the cooked vegetables aside for a minute.

Using some of the vegetable stock and some of the roasted garlic oil, make a homemade hummus. Use some as a binder in the veggie burger recipe and save the rest. Put the drained chickpeas, 1/4 cup of the vegetable stock, the zest of the lemon, as well as the juice from half of it, and three tablespoons of the garlic oil into the food processor and blend until smooth.

You may need to add a little bit extra garlic oil or stock to achieve the consistency you want.

Now you have all your ingredients ready. Put half of the cooked vegetable mixture in the food processor with

three tbsp of the homemade hummus, 1/2 cup of rice, the Dijon mustard, the drained roasted garlic, and all of the ground oats. Pulse that mixture until a thick paste like consistency is achieved.

Fold in the rest of the cooked vegetables, 1/2 cup rice, the shaved carrots, and the tiny broccoli florets for texture. At this point you can portion and form your vegetable patties.

Lay them out evenly on a tray lined with parchment paper and freeze the patties for an hour before you cook them. Cook them on the grill or in a skillet with just a little bit of oil. Toast a bun and garnish with your favorite burger sides and enjoy.
