Good for seniors and people with physical ailments, back problems, carpel tunnel, arthritis, or anything that may have made you think you couldn’t do this! Make 3-dimensional scenes with paper engineering tricks; use paper, paint and modeling clay to make miniature environments (dioramas extraordinaire); and make your own alebri-jes, the folk art fantastical animal creatures from Mexico. 2D / 3D CREATE AND PAINT Mar 5-Apr 16 (no 4/2) 6 sessions Tuesdays Program #13SG14 Make paintings inspired by the wildly intricate and brightly colored ancient illustrations from Persian books of history, legend and poetry. Make fabric collages, arranging the pieces of fabric in decorative patterns or in a picture of an animal with a landscape background. Decorate boxes with paint and glossy paper mosaics. Create your own robot, machine, or animal from small boxes and wire along with odds and ends like buttons, caps, washers and more! Students will learn hand shaping and mold-ing in the creation of heads and sculpted figures - air dry clay medium. Helpful to know some drawing. Learn about multi-paneled pages, splash page and other comics concepts. Work on your own or collaborate with fellow students, either way your works will be featured in a final publication that will be distributed the last day of class. CHINESE ART & CULTURE - hands on Apr 17-May 22 6 sessions Wednesdays Program #13SG34 Learn about the ancient art of Chinese painting and then make your own Chinese animal paintings with authentic rice paper and bamboo brushes. Learn about and make your own traditional Chinese crafts such as tangrams, ancient shaped puzzles, Chinese knots and paper cut-outs. Learn the history and method of the writing of Chinese characters, learn a few characters and see how some of them are actually pictures of their meaning. We will even learn about combining some characters to create other meanings (such as “sun” and “moon” give you the character for bright). A $15 material fee is due to instructor at first class. MANDALAS: A BEGINNER’S EXPLORATION Apr 22-May 13 4 sessions Mondays Program #13SG35 Mandala, a Samskrit word that means “circle,” is a pattern that is used in many traditions—Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Native Americans, Aztecs, Tibet-an monks and many more—and is found in abundance throughout nature. Join us as we explore its ancient pattern and many uses as a vehicle to explore art, science, religion and life itself. A $10 material fee is due to instructor at first class. Age: 15–adult. Carroll Carvers 22nd Annual Fes val of Carving will be held Saturday,  April  13th  at  the  Robert  Moton  Center,  300  S.  Center  Street  in           Westminster.   The show  is open  to  the public at 10am; admission  is $3.00, children under 16 free when accompanied by an adult.  

The  show  features  all  types  of wood  carving  from  regional  carvers. There will  be  carving  compe on,  carving  demos,  door  prizes  and informa on about the club.  Come and see top area carvers and learn how you can get  involved  in this great art.   Tables are available on a limited  basis  to woodcarvers wishing  to  demonstrate  and  sell  their carvings.

Swimmers should be able to swim several lengths of the pool without assistance, and demonstrate com-fortable freestyle with rotary breathing, a competent backstroke, and the funda-mentals of breaststroke and butterfly. Swimmers continue developing their swim-ming skills and technique for improvement and conditioning and/or with the in-tent of joining a swim team. Age: 3–13. Program #13SG43 5/17 AND 5/19 An eight-hour course that meets the state requirements for boating and personal watercraft safety. In order to operate a motor boat or personal watercraft, persons born after July 1, 1972, are required by Maryland law to successfully complete this certification course. Class includes a review of chart reading, course plotting, marlinspike (knot tying). Age: all (under 13 must be accompa-nied by a paying adult). No early bird or senior discount. Muddy mayhem is back by popular demand! Don’t miss this unique event. First-timers to seasoned athletes and adventure racers, this run is sure to challenge you. This year the Mudrun travels to a new location. The race will start at the Carroll County Sports Complex leading runners onto the challenging terrain of Hashawha. Onerous obstacles, tricky terrain and plenty of mud awaits you on this 5-6K adventure run. Enter as an individual, team of 2, or team of 4 – costumed or non-costumed. Costumes are encouraged and prizes are awarded for the best costume is each category. Cash prizes for the first male and female finisher, first place 2-person team, and first place 4-person team. Place medals and finishers medals awarded. Registration opens soon so start rallying your teammates, planning your costume, and encouraging your friends and neighbors to register. Remem-ber, all proceeds from this event support the Carroll County Park Legacy Fund which raises money for park and trail related projects in Carroll County, MD. Also look for details on the Mini-Muddies Run for our younger adventure runners.

Equestrian Horseback riding offers everyone with a disability the opportunity to participate in a life sport, improve their fitness level, make new friends and participate in a safe environment. 4-H Therapeutic Riding of Carroll County offers group lessons in Westminster semi-annually to eligible riders, beginning at age 3. POWERLIFTING Much more than the deadlift or bench press, it is effort, persistence and loyalty. Training, determination and attitude are the key factors that define the balance between a successful or a failed attempt. Athletes will train at least one time per week beginning in late March competing in qualifying tournaments. All eligible SO athletes age 8 and older are welcome, at all ability levels. Time and location of practice sessions T/B/D. SOFTBALL Teams play 10-on-10 competition with Traditional Teams composed of all SO athletes, or Unified Teams composed of equal proportions of SO athletes and non-disabled peers. Carroll County will field either one or two teams comprised of high schoolers (age 16-21) and/or young adults (age 22-49). Begin training at least one time per week beginning in late March and compete in qualifying tournaments. For all eligible SO athletes and non-disabled Unified Partners at the appropriate age level. Time and location of practice sessions T/B/D. Head Coach: Anthony Parrish BOCCE One of SO’s fastest growing sports, due largely in part to its accessibility for athletes of all ability and mobility levels. Training will develop progressively more advanced techniques to compete in this classic lawn sport. Train and compete in qualifying tournaments as both singles and doubles (pairs). Practices begin early April (location and coach T/B/D).

AQUATICS One of the original SO sports offered since 1968. Individual and relay events are offered for all strokes. Athletes are taught proper stroke technique, starts, turns and relay exchanges. For all eligible SO athletes age 8 and older, beginners are welcome. The season runs from March 13-June 5 with practices held at 4 Seasons Sports Complex in Hampstead, Wednesdays 7-8pm, Saturdays 5:30-7pm. ATHLETICS—TRACK & FIELD Join over 200 county athletes at the Carroll County Spring Games held at Westminster High School, April 24 (rain date 5/1). To compete, athletes may register with a participating public school or join the TRC team. TRC trains athletes in running, jumping and throwing events. Athletes who complete the practice sessions are eligible to compete in the spring games. Practices are held Saturdays 2/16-4/24, 9-10:30am, at Carroll Springs School, 495 S. Center Street, Westminster (moving outdoors to Westminster High School in late March/early April). Participating athletes may also choose to continue on to the summer games. For all eligible SO athletes age 8 and older, beginners are welcome. Coach: Kathy Zuback DUCK PIN BOWLING A locally popular sport enjoyed by hundreds each year. Athletes train at Thun-derhead Lanes, Taneytown beginning Monday, February 4, 2013, 6:30pm, and are eligible to compete in a culminating competition held May 20. 410-386-3580 Hashawha and Bear Branch Nature Center are located just north of Westminster, off Rt. 97 at 300 John Owings Road. The Nature Center is open year round. Hours of operation are Wednesday-Saturday 11am-5pm, and Sunday 12pm-5pm. All Nature Center programs require pre-registration with Recreation & Parks, (unless otherwise noted)-see form in back. Groups MUST schedule programs directly with the Nature Center; phone or email [email protected]. Hashawha’s trails are open to the public from dawn until dusk 365 days a year. Parking is only available at Lake Hashawha or Bear Branch Nature Center. There is no en-trance fee for the park. A dedicated community of people, most of them local farmers, had the barn taken apart (numbering each piece), moved and reassembled at the museum. 6-12 . Children will have loads of fun playing games and sports, making crafts, going on

field trips and swimming at the Westminster Municipal Pool. We offer camp during all weeks that Carroll County Public Schools are out of session. The cost is $115 per week. AM and PM

Tot Camp is held at the Babylon Community Building behind 11 Longwell Avenue. It is

REFUND POLICY Classes: Requests for full refunds must be received by phone at our office at least 10 days prior to the starting date of the course. Session refunds may be given for withdrawal requests made after that date at the discretion of Recreation and Parks. No refunds will be issued after two sessions. No refunds will be issued for courses meeting only one or two sessions. Students with consistent discipline problems will be dropped from class without a refund. Bus Trips: Requests for full refunds must be received by phone/in person at least one month prior to the date of the trip unless there is a specific date listed in the course description. After the deadline has passed, there will be NO refunds and any tickets purchased are the property of the registrant. CANCELLATION POLICY: Carroll County Recrea-tion and Parks reserves the right to cancel any course at its discretion. In case of cancelation, a full refund will be given within 10-14 business days. INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY: When Carroll County Public Schools are closed or close early due to weath-er or other emergency conditions, Carroll County Recrea-tion & Parks programs are canceled for that day. For week-end/non-school days, once the Snow Emergency Plan is in effect for Carroll County, no Recreation & Parks activities take place.
