January 2018 A Call to All Instrument Makers Our new video is a Call to Instrument Makers to enter the 2018 Annual OHMI Competition. Do take a look: https://youtu.be/rk3_lkemifs Most of our instruments are found or inspired by competition entries, so it’s of vital importance to our work. For more details about the OHMI Competition, including the categories and rules, go to: https://www.ohmi.org.uk/competition-darr.html Arts Awards – in a Day! In October and November, young members of OHMI Music Makers gathered in Birmingham and Surrey to try to for an “Arts Award Discover” - in a day. Led by Liz Wrighton of Birmingham’s Services for Education, our aspiring musicians spent the day making and listening to music. They enjoyed a fascinating session with Kris Halpin, the musician and singer songwriter, and heard first-hand about his career. Guided by Rachel Wolffsohn and Tim Low from OHMI, the youngsters were not shy in asking Kris searching questions about his life, and they all loved trying out the hi-tech (and OHMI award winning) Mi.Mu gloves he uses to make music. Holst’s Mars from The Planets Suite - one of the BBC’s Ten Pieces was then used as the stimulus for their own composition. At the end of the day, and to rapturous applause, they performed their composition to parents and organisers – just reward to all the hard work and study that had gone into this enjoyable day. Certificates will soon be awarded by the Arts Award organisation, but we hope that this will be just the start of their musical achievements. A Call for Papers and Presentations - Music & Physical Disability: From Instrument to Performance On September 7th and 8th 2018, the OHMI Trust, in collaboration with Birmingham City University and Queen Mary University of London, will host a major conference exploring the barriers to music-making faced by people with physical disabilities. The conference will be held at the Royal Conservatoire, Birmingham and will also encompass the 2018 OHMI Competition awards. The programme will interleave research papers with demonstrations and talks from instrument makers, teachers, students and other practitioners. Submissions must be received by March 31st 2018. Conference registration will open shortly. Full details on the Call for Papers and Submissions can be found on our website: https://www.ohmi.org.uk/call-for-papers.html
