I n 201 4 , he added t iny house s on wheels (T HoWs) to h is l i s t of ava i lable models at t he request of many cl ients.

“Creat ion i s one of the most ama zing processes we as humans have the pr ivilege of part ic ipat ing in” says Patr ick. “I like to be part of the team energy that br ings a c lient ’s dream into realit y. P rojects t ur n out so much bet ter when ever yone at the table i s an equal part ner in the process.”

Patr ick br ings f i rst hand understanding of t he needs and passions of t iny home ent husiasts to A r t isan T iny House, hav ing bui lt h is f i rst t iny house on t he back of a 1949 Dodge f latbed t r uck in 1972. He l ived in a 17 7-square -foot accessor y dwel l ing unit in SE Por t land whi le in col lege as wel l as in a 16’x24’ cabin in Hood R iver, Oregon w it h a spr ing for water and an outdoor shower, where he lear ned to ba ke in a wood cook stove, chur n but ter and ra ise honeybees.

P a t r i c k , a s u s t a i n a b l e b u i l d i n g a d v i s o r, h a s a w e l l - e a r n e d r e p u t a t i o n f o r de velopi ng e xc el lent work i ng re lat ion sh ip s w it h home bu i lder s , vendor s a nd cont rac tors. He i s t ra ined in L EED (L eadership in Energ y a nd Env ironmenta l Design), a w idely used green bui lding rat ing system, and in Passive House design, in addit ion to Ear t h Advantage and Net Z ero homes. Meet ing a l l Depar tment of Transpor tat ion g uidel ines, our t ra i lers w i l l accommodate eit her f loor system, whet her you choose to bui ld it into or on top of t he f rame.

A r t isan T iny House has manufact urers in Ca l i for nia, Colorado, Ok la homa, Oregon, Texas and Washington. DI Y plans are a lso avai lable i f you want to fabr icate it yourself or choose your ow n manufact urer.

The key deter minants in selec t ing a t ra i ler are t he weight , w idt h and leng t h of your t iny house. Tra i lers are designed to c ar r y a Gross Vehicle Weight (GV W ) as wel l as a ma x imum weight on t he tong ue so t hey w i l l pul l properly.

Our t ra i lers are manufact ured in leng t hs of 16’, 20’, 24’, 28’ and a 5t h-wheel version t hat is 32’ (24’ dow n and 8’ up on t he neck).

Our t ra i lers are ava i lable eit her 8’- 0” or 8’-4” w ide. When c a lcu lat ing t he w idt h of your home be sure to include items t hat ex tend out ward: t r im, roof, vents, out lets, etc . Trai lers that are used for t iny houses are a lmost a lways 8’- 6” to the outside of the fenders. However, t he inner plat for m t hat you bui ld your home on c an be any where f rom 7 ’ (t he w idt h of t he main f rame) up to 8’- 6”.

CUSTOM TRAILER PLANSAND MANUFACTURING

STEEL TUBE MAIN FRAMEA f ter c aref u l eva luat ion, we chose one common size, f u l ly welded steel t ube for t he main f rame and t he outr ig gers. Str uct ura l steel angles for t he cross members ma ke up t he ba lance of t he system.

IN-FRAME OR ON-FRAME FLOOR SYSTEMOur design makes it simple and quick to bui ld an insulated f loor in t he f rame or on t he f rame. There are pros and cons for each f loor system (see our website for an ar t ic le t hat look s at bot h of t hem).

NO STEEL PAN TO CONDENSE MOISTURE IN THE FLOOROur t ra i lers a re designed to use ½” pressure -t reated ply wood as t he protect ive shield. 3 1/2” inches of t he insulat ion of your choice is added for up to R-18.5 . I f you bui ld on top of the f rame w ith SIPs t his c an go as h igh as R-32.

St r uc t ura l insu lated pa nels (SIPs) a re a h ig h-per for ma nce, green bui ld ing system t hat is ex tremely strong, energ y- ef f ic ient and cost- ef fect ive, requir ing no addit iona l f rame or skeleton for suppor t . They consist of an insulat ing ex panded polyst y rene (EPS) foa m core sa ndw iched bet ween t wo fac ings of or iented st ra nd boa rd (OSB), using a st r uct ura l ad hesive. SIPs c an be fabr ic ated to f it nearly any bui ld ing design (see page 23). A r t isan T iny House’s SIPs ar r ive w it h a l l w indow and door openings cut in and routed for w ir ing and lumber.

SIPs dramatica l ly reduce air transfer through the f loor, wal ls and roofs by minimizing joints, and prov ide sol id, cont inuous insulat ion across each panel’s height, w idth and dept h. A r t isa n T iny House’s s ta nda rd pack age for a t iny house on wheels includes f loor, wal ls and roof SIPs that are 4-1/2” (R-16). Thicker SIPs w ith higher R-va lues or for h igher snow loads are ava i lable as an opt ion. (R-24 SIP is 6 -1/2” t hick . In some markets we c an prov ide poly uret hane SIPs w it h R-28 in a 4-1/2” panel.)
