    The American C i v i l War was t h e f i r s t American war i nwhich t h e o p p os in g i n f a n t r i e s were armed a lmos t e n t i r e l y w i t hr i f l e d small arms.* T h e p r e s e n c e o f r i f l e s i n t h e h a nd s o fo p p o s i n g i n f a n t r y a f f e c t e d a r t i l l e r y i n two ways.
