Friends, The Polk Arts Alliance (PAA) is moving forward into 2012 with renewed excitement and vision. As recently elected president, I am pleased to serve on a board whose members share equal enthusiasm in PAAs mission to promote the cultural arts in Polk County through advocacy, collaboration, economic development, education and promotion. Dan Clark

This year eleven new members have been elected to join the board and their astute business sense will complement the existing boards insight, experience and talents. On behalf of PAA, I would like to welcome Ashley Barnett, Thomas Bryant, Dave Connor, Darby Craddock, Andy Crossfield, Adam Justice, Andy Laurent, John Loute, Susan Waddell, and Jared Weggeland to the board. As president, and with input and hard work from the PAA team, I anticipate further county and state recognition of Polk County as a Destination for the Arts. We have begun forming partnerships with the over 700 creative industries located in our County and increasing the awareness of the importance of arts in education. Furthermore, PAA continues its work with Americans for the Arts as research partner on the Economic Impact Study IV to foster greater support for the arts, trace the arts economic footprint and prove tangibly the effect of the arts on our community. This Great Room overlooking Lake Deer can accommodate an audience of 65 listeners. This is a wonderful acoustic venue, however some performers have brought small amplification systems for their own specific needs in balancing out quiet instruments. Executive DirectorIt was a very busy fall for the arts in Polk County and the Polk Arts Alliance had a few milestones as well. With the launch of the Heart of the Arts month in October, the arts had a culmination of over 100 events just for the month of October! We began with a proclamation recognizing October as Heart of the Arts Month by the Board of County Commissioners. We have a great logo for this (thanks to the Polk Advertising Federation) and their members who generously donated a public service announcement that aired the entire month on the Big 4 radio stations and the Citrus Connection which is still driving around Polk County with over 40 signs with the logo and promoting the website at www.polkarts.org. Our October initiatives were in line with the national Americans for the Arts, Arts and Humanities month, and with the launch of State initiative Culture Builds Florida campaign. The Polk Arts Alliance is joining with our state counterparts to develop unified awareness of Floridas arts and cultural community, and its positive impact on the economy. This includes 88,000 full time equivalent jobs and $3 billion of direct economic activity in Florida. Beyond the dollars, cultural experiences contribute to a better life for Floridians and visitors. I would like to thank the PAA Board of Directors, all of our Council members and arts partners for their support to change the County Ordinance 86-27 to add the word museums back into the language to be in line with the state statute and Im happy to say it was unanimously approved by the Board of County Commissioners on October 25 (please thank them for their support whenever you get a chance). We have also begun a successful partnership with Tourism and Sports Marketing to increase our arts marketing initiatives and distribution of Art-i-facts for the benefit of the Arts in Polk County and the Cultural Arts Council. We have a lot of work to do but we have great support and great momentum and Im wishing for a greater 2012 for all! Meri Mass

Whats New in the ArtsPolk State College, Lake Wales Arts Council Announce Innovative CollaborationThe Lake Wales Arts Council and Polk State College have announced an innovative partnership, intended to ensure the sustainability of the LWACs historic facility in Lake Wales, expand access to cultural resources in the community, and leverage and grow Polk States vibrant educational and cultural offerings in the region. A central piece of the announcement is news that the LWACs board of directors has voted unanimously to transfer title to the Lake Wales Arts Center building to Polk State, no later than Dec. 31, 2011. The agreement is expected to be ratified by Polk States District Board of Trustees at its regularly scheduled November meeting. In exchange for the building, Polk State has provided LWAC with assurances that the building, to be renamed the Polk State College Lake Wales Arts Center, will be renovated and maintained by the College and that arts and cultural programming at the facility will continue. According to Dr. Eileen Holden, President of Polk State, This is a very exciting announcement for Polk State and for the Lake Wales community. Its a classic win-win situation. The Council has transferred stewardship of a precious, historic resource to the College, in order to maintain the viability of the facility and preserve community access to a beautiful structure and an array of important culture and arts events. Barbara Connor, President of the LWAC board of directors, echoed those sentiments: Polk State has already shown that they have a strong commitment to Lake Wales and to historic preservation. Our board is pleased with the opportunity to attach the College to our building, giving us the opportunity to focus more specifically on programming. The Lake Wales Arts Council, according to Connor, will continue to organize the Lake Wales Arts Show, the Student Art Show, the Marilyn Newell Youth Music Festival, and Chorale, as well as other performances, exhibits or events at the Polk State Lake Wales Arts Center. Dr. Sharon Miller, Provost of Polk States Winter Haven campus and the direct supervisor of Polk States Lake Wales operations, expressed unreserved enthusiasm for what she described as a wonderful opportunity for our community. Miller cited Polk States experience renovating and operating the J.D. Alexander Center, housed in another historic Lake Wales landmark, as a basis for her enthusiasm. We have seen how important historic preservation is to Lake Wales, and we have also seen how much this community values education and the arts, said Miller. Our collaboration at the arts center will further solidify the partnership we have enjoyed with the community, and it will certainly expand access to opportunity a value Polk State holds dear. According to Holden, the Polk State College Lake Wales Arts Center will be owned and operated by the Polk State College District Board of Trustees and will also include an advisory board, consisting of six members appointed by the Polk State Trustees and five members appointed by the Arts Council. Sustainability funding for Polk States newly acquired facility has been provided by the State of Florida, which added operating funds to the College budget in the past legislative session. According to Holden, Florida recognized that we have been good stewards of historic architecture and that we have an unmatched commitment to providing access to educational and cultural activities throughout our service area. We are honored by the trust they have placed in us, and we are energized by this new opportunity in Lake Wales. Miller points out that the Colleges newest asset couldnt come at a better time. According to Miller, Polk States existing Lake Wales facility is operating at or near capacity, and we have been desperate for more space. Now we will be able to serve this community even more effectively.

Arts In EducationApplication Deadline for Harrison School for the Arts: Jan. 13, 2012Harrison School is accepting applications for the 2012-2013 school year. Applications are available through the school office. The application deadline is January 13, 2012 for programs in Chorus, Dance, Guitar, Jazz Band, Motion Picture Arts, Orchestra, Piano, Musical Theatre, Technical Theatre, Theatre, and Visual Arts. Three parent meetings are offered to answer questions and provide distinct information about the audition process and expectations. The meetings are at Davenport School of the Arts on November 29, at Harrison School for the Arts on December 5 and the final meeting is at Jewett Academy on December 6. All three meetings take place at 7 p.m. Additional information can be found on the Harrison School for the Arts website at www.harrisonarts.com.

What was your most favorite role? I loved playing Clara in the Nutcracker. I hope someday to be able to perform the role of Juliet in Romeo and Juliet and also Odette in Swan Lake. Have you received any awards or scholarships? yes, I received scholarships to Orlando Ballet and the Patel Conservatorys summer intensives. Ive also received awards from Florida Dance Theatres Publix Super Markets Charities scholarships and 2 awards from the Tuesday Music Clubs Francis Beery awards. What are your plans for the future? Of course I want to continue dancing. I also love teaching both ballet and modern, and Im really interested in choreography. When I was involved in FDT2, the student ensemble, I had the opportunity to choreograph on my fellow dancers. What are your other interests? I like to play the piano, do some creative writing and also photography. Erin is the daughter of Teri Gavin, ballet faculty member at FDT and musician Joe Gavin. Her sister Alison is also a talented young dancer at FDT.

Erin Gavin: From Baby Ballet to Ballerinarin Gavin began creative movement classes at age two and arrived at the Academy of FDT at age four. Florida Dance Theatre Artistic & Founding Director Carol Erkes saw the amazing raw talent and dedication even at that age. She was very focused from the moment she walked in the door. She has her own style that makes you want to watch her. She dances with joy and passion. She has now been training at Florida Dance Theatre for over 12 years. At age 17, she is now a member of FDTs professional company. A short interview with Erin: Why do you dance? I feel free when I dance. Its part of my soul. I love being able to express myself in a way people find enjoyable. What is your favorite style of dance? I love ballet and working on all the technique and movement necessary for all forms of dance.

Singing for You!Polk Countys Citrus Lakes Chorus is singing for you! Ill bet you didnt know that the Citrus Lakes Chorus has been serving the Polk County community since 1965! The Chorus specializes in preserving and providing purely American music in barbershop style. The barbershop style is celebrated for its use of very close and more complex harmony that is very pleasing to the ear. The chorus sings for the general entertainment of the community it serves and just for the pleasure of singing. The mission of the Citrus Lakes Chorus is to provide a means for men who love close harmony to link with other men whose love is the same. The mission of our chapter is to perpetuate the unique art form of barbershop harmony in this and succeeding generations. Achievement of this mission may employ organized quartetting, pickup quartetting, tag quartetting, chorus singing, woodshedding, and group or gang singing. The Citrus Lakes Chorus is passionate about barbershop harmony and will sing just about anywhere they are invited. Rock! Paper! Paint!The Lakeland Art Guild begins 2012 with Rock! Paper! Paint!, a demonstration by nationally known artist Carol Frye, NWS, FWS. Carol creates collage paintings which feature unusual stones, metals and acrylic paint. The demo is set for Monday, January 30, 2012 in the Peggy Brown Building on Lake Mirror at 6:30 p.m. The LAG is pleased to announce that several Polk County residents were recognized by the Florida Watercolor Society (FWS) at its recent convention. Signature status was awarded to Dana Daydodge, FWS of Haines City. Signature standing comes with acceptance of paintings in three annual shows. Her painting this year was entitled Comanche. The LAG meets at 6:30 p.m. on the last Monday of the month at the Peggy Brown Building, 121 South Lake Avenue, Lakeland, FL from September through May. The first offering of the year was a two-day class with Tom Freeman on October 26 and 27.Tom helped us paint a portrait of our pets in acrylics.Tom was his usual selfentertaining, helpful and instructive. he IMPERIAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA will open its 11th Opera Season with the production of The Barber of Seville by Giochino Rossini on January 21, 2012 at 7 pm. The opera will be performed at Branscomb Auditorium on the campus of Florida Southern College. Directed by FSC's own Dr. John Thomasson and conducted by James Carraher from the Indianapolis Opera, this romantic comedy promises to be a light and entertaining evening.

The Barber of Seville is probably the best loved Italian comic opera, turning easily from sentimentality to laughter. Set in Seville in the 18th century, the story revolves around a noble, Count Almaviva, who has a serious case of love at first sight with a girl named Rosina, currently living as a ward to Dr. Bartolo. Help enters for the Count, for a fee of course, in the form of Figaro, the Barber of Seville. He also has Dr. Bartolo's trust who secretly wants to marry Rosina himself. Thus begins the love triangle so popular in opera. This being a comedy, hilarity ensues.For the ISO's performance, the role of Rosina will be sung by Priti Gandhi, a relative of Mahatma Gandhi. A native of India, Gandhi has sung with opera houses including New York City Opera, Royal Opera House and Los Angeles Opera. She is currently working on a documentary for PBS. The role of Figaro will be sung by Lee Gregory. Gregory joined the roster of the Metropolitan Opera for its production of Capriccio during the 2010-2011 Season. He also will be singing the role of Richard Nixon in Nixon in China for the Eugene Opera. Stephen Eisenhard will play Dr. Bartolo, Rosina's guardian. Eisenhard has performed many of opera's beloved comic roles, among them, Don Pasquale. He made his debut with Nevada Opera as Bartolo in their production of The Barber of Seville. Playing the role of Count Almaviva, a local nobleman, will be Vale Rideout. This past season Rideout appeared in concert as soloist in Handel's Messiah with the Louisiana Philharmonic as well as a performance with the Dallas Symphony at Carnegie Hall. He has also sung with the Boston Lyric Opera in The Turn of the Screw. Appearing as Berta, a servant to Dr. Bartolo, will be Lakeland's own mezzo-soprano, Christina Sale. You will remember fondly Sale 's stellar performance as Carmen in the ISO's production of Carmen.

Hunt Slonem: An Expressive Nature

Contemporary works by New York- and Louisiana-based artist Hunt Slonem are sought after by collectors around the world. Polk Museum of Art will display Slonems work in an exhibition, An Expressive Nature, from December 17 through March 24. Slonems vibrantly colored works can be found in nearly 100 international museum collections and countless other corporate and private collections. His expressive paintings pivot between the fantastic and the natural. As a youth in Hawaii, he developed an early affinity for nature, especially the various species of tropical birds living on the island. These natural forms ultimately became the subjects for his artworks, appearing in large, lavishly colored paintings and constructed sculptures. As an artist, Slonem is fascinated by the many expressive faculties of color. His paintings are layered with thick brushstrokes of vivid color, often cut into in a cross-hatched pattern that adds texture to the overall surface of the painting. This surface patterning combines with the rich colors and recognizable subject matter to create paintings that are as physically exciting as they are aesthetically rich. The exhibition will be celebrated at a reception from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, January 13, 2012. The artist will give a lecture about his work beginning at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., a reception featuring light hors doeuvres and a cash bar begins. Historical MuseumHome for the Holidayshe Festival of Wreaths begins November 18th with a colorful display of holiday decorations throughout the museum. The wreaths have been donated by a variety of Polk friends of the museum, businesses and organizations. Wreaths will be available to win and take home by silent auction. Join us December 9th, 2011 for the grand closing event during the Bartow Christmas parade, including an opportunity for a photo with special guests, Mr. and Mrs. Claus. On exhibit through January 28th, 2012, in the museums changing galleries are Dolls and Their Houses for the Holidays. Adults and children alike with an interest in dolls and wooden dollhouses will enjoy this display from museum collections. After all, people built them to look like our own homes and families, turning the hobby into an art form. Continuing through January is the popular exhibit A Glimpse Back at Cypress Gardens: Polk County Fairyland. The museum in partnership with Florida Southern Colleges Lawton M. Chiles Center for Florida History has assembled a colorful array of memorabilia and photographs to offer museum visitors a look back at one of Floridas earliest attractions.

Jazz phenomenon Wynton Marsalis

coming to Polk state College, Winter Haven Campusarsalis will be accompanied by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra for the performance, scheduled for March 8 at 7 p.m. at the Fine Arts Theatre on the Winter Haven campus. Winter Haven campus Provost Dr. Sharon Miller said Marsalis appearance at the College is a rare opportunity for the community to experience world-class talent close to home. Life affords us historical moments in time. The visit of Wynton Marsalis to the Winter Haven community and Polk State College is just that, one of those historical moments in time, she said. Marsalis started playing the trumpet when he was 12 and went on to study at The Julliard School. He has recorded 70 jazz and classical albums. His awards include nine GRAMMYs and the Pulitzer Prize. An avid supporter of music education, Marsalis serves as the artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, which offers a year-round schedule of performances, education events and broadcasts to grow and inspire the audience for jazz. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra includes 15 accomplished jazz soloists and ensemble players. The Orchestra is known for its versatility and is regularly booked for a wide range of venues around the world. The Orchestras current tour celebrates Marsalis 50th birthday and will showcase a retrospective of his music for big bands. Attendees will also enjoy modern renditions of music by jazz greats Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, Jackie McLean, Lee Morgan and Joe Henderson. Completing the night will be modern compositions and arrangements by contemporary jazz artists. Marsalis visit follows a 2011 sold-out presentation at Polk State by Dr. Maya Angelou. As Miller points out, Colleges have always been magnets for talent, and Polk State is proving that point yet again in 2012. ids Tag Art is a school fundraising project originating here in Polk County by the Tax Collectors Office. The program inspires fifth grade art students to learn about and design their own specialty plate art and in the process, raises supplemental monies for classroom art supplies. Kids Tag Art inspires young artists to create their own unique design, learning the practical application of license plate art to support worthy causes, fashioned after Floridas 100+ specialty license plates. Kids Tag Art gives Polk Countys art teachers a creative way to expand innovative minds and augment their program budgets to teach classroom art. Kids Tag Art is an innovative and stimulating program that helps teachers inspire creativity and nurture successful, innovative young leaders. Now into its sixth year, Kids Tag Art is in most elementary school curriculums across Polk County and as a result, has helped raise over $89,000 in classroom art supplies. This year, the program will exceed $100,000 in total monies collected for school art.Kids Tag Art continues to grow, not only throughout Polk but has expanded into Highlands and Charlotte counties. The Kids Tag Art Program has just wrapped up the classroom design phase and tags are into production at Douglass Screen Printers. Teachers submit the five top designs from their school to Polk Museum of Art, who selects two students art from every school as Awards of Distinction tags to be displayed on the traveling Kids Tag Art Exhibit and on the Tax Collectors webiste where they are availble for sale to the public. Award-winning designs will be on the website on November 16 and available for sale through May 31, 2012. This years award-winning vanity tags are available to the public for $28 each. ationally known comic-genius and musician Jim Stafford will be performing at the newly restored Ritz Theatre in Winter Haven, Florida. "Jim Stafford - Home For Christmas" will run December 15 through December 18, 2011. There will also be a special VIP Reception and Gala Red Carpet event with a Benefit Show on Saturday, December 17 with all proceeds to go towards the restoration funding for The Ritz Theatre. Stafford, citing his childhood memories of Winter Haven, The Ritz Theatre, his continuing friendship with classmates and neighbors, said, "I've known for years that there has been interest in restoring The Ritz. While visiting with my high school buddy, Jim Pruitt and his wife Glenda, they introduced my wife Annie and me to Stella Heath, the executive director of the Ritz Theatre 100 Restoration Committee. Then Steve Warner, their Vice-President said that the theater would be ready for performances and events beginning in October. It made me realize, if I could do shows at The Ritz, I could be home for Christmas." Born in Winter Haven, Jim and high school friends, Gram Parsons and Kent LaVoie (a/k/a Lobo), played in a band together and each went on to national success in the music business.
