The events of August 31, 1995 altered history for both the Johns family and the Atlanta West Pentecostal Church family. That was the day the church asked our family to move to Atlanta for me to serve as pastor. That was twenty years ago, and these have been the most fulfilling years of our lives and ministry.

This September 12-13, we will celebrate the good things that God has done in and through us. While I am happily in the dark about most of the plans, I know our church family is planning to express appreciation to our family for serving Atlanta West. However, this anniversary is not only about us, it’s about a relationship marked by mutual love and respect. With the approach of this special event, it has been in my heart to express how much the Johns family appreciates our church family.

Much has happened in the past two decades. As the old-timers say, “A lot of water has gone under the bridge.” In twenty years, we’ve dedicated children, watched them grow up, and then dedicated their babies. There have been births and deaths, triumphs and tragedies, highs and lows. We have laughed together and mourned together. We’ve celebrated “What’s with the Party?” with hundreds of people who were saved, and mourned the loss of some who “went away and walked with Him no more.”

There are many wonderful traits that typify the Atlanta West family. You are doctrinally sound, spiritually sensitive, loving, compassionate, faithful, generous, hardworking, adaptable, and deeply committed to the message and mission of the Church.

With that said, the characteristic of Atlanta West that makes every other quality viable is your cooperative spirit. In my estimation, you, the members of our church, excel in your willingness to follow as God leads.

Speaking of the cooperation of our church, let me quantify my comment. Recently, in the halftime report, I shared statistics that identified the heart of our church. We learned that our “Gideon’s Army” -- or committed core -- represents a much larger percentage of our congregation than Gideon’s. His core of 300 men represented less than 1% of his potential army of 32,000 men who originally volunteered.

At Atlanta West, a full 45% of our people (based on average adult attendance) are involved in a viable ministry of our church. That’s 282 dedicated volunteers! On any given Sunday, 83% of our active members (896 people) are in church.

A spirit of cooperation is a common denominator of great organizations. Atlanta West is a great church because of the willing hearts of our people.

• In King David’s day, the people gathered resources to build the Temple and gave “willingly.” (See 1 Chronicles 29:9.) • Nehemiah attributed his leadership success in rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem to the fact that “the people had a mind to work” (Nehemiah 4:6). • Paul complimented the Macedonian church because in “great trial of affliction,” they were willing to give (2 Corinthians 8:2).

People with willing hearts, who cooperate with God’s will, make a church great. Such is the heart of Atlanta West.

The pastor-church relationship is similar to a marriage. A marriage can only reach its potential if both husband and wife work diligently to make it succeed. A one-sided marriage has been likened to a bird with a broken wing. No matter how fast the healthy wing flaps, it is impossible for the bird to fly.

The success of a church does not rest solely on the leadership of a pastor or leadership team. Success is equally dependent on the cooperation of the church. A pastor can cast a God-given vision, but unless it is “caught” by the church, it will fall flat and fail.

For example, Jesus, the greatest leader of all time, experienced rejection because of people who would not respond to His ministry. He came to His own people, and they did not receive Him. (See John 1:11.) The people to whom Jesus came to minister were like children calling to their friends to come out and play. No matter what game they chose, they were uncooperative and unresponsive. (See Matthew 11:16-17.) Regardless of the approach God used with His people, it was rejected.

The success of a church is dependent on a relationship of mutual love and respect. On behalf of the Johns family, thank you for your kindness to us over the past twenty years. Together, we give God the glory for every step forward, every battle won and every milestone reached.

Please accept my heartfelt thanks to you for being a cooperative body of believers, sold out to the message and mission of the church. It is my honor to serve you and for our family to call Atlanta West Pentecostal Church home.
