Net-A-Porter’s buying director Holli Rogers offers a few pointers on how to shop from the runway.
When viewing a fashion show, which elements do you focus on in order to assess its commerciality? There are many different elements to take into consideration when selecting our buy each season; attending the shows is just one part of the process. We usually kick off the season with pre-collection appointments, which are more intimate experiences and help us to better understand fit, fabric and construction. The customer is always top-of-mind when curating our buy and our team looks for pieces that are on-trend, compelling, exciting and reflective of the general and cultural mood. I also have a keen interest in street fashion from around the world and find the people I come across on my trips really inspiring. I love to travel; I find soaking up all of the different cultures is a great way to stay abreast of global trends.
Which emerging designer holds great promise?It’s so hard to pick just one, especially as we are adding over 30 new brands to our portfolio. However, I’d say the ones to watch are Giulietta, Burak Uyan, Altuzarra and Faith Connexion. Giulietta offers a subtle collection of sharply cut pencil skirts and dresses. For shoes, I’d say Burak Uyan is an absolute must. Formerly a designer at Givenchy, Uyan’s designs have an architectural sensibility with the perfect balance of elegance and modernity. We are also thrilled to be picking up CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund nominee Altuzarra. Lastly, Faith Connexion is a line from French designer and jetsetter Ilan Delouis, noted for its rocker edgy looks and strong celebrity/hipster following.
Can you give us a peek into your show-time suitcase?I find lightweight cashmere from Clu, and Rick Owens and luxe T-shirts from T by Alexander Wang are great for layering and managing different
