Style.Uz Art Week, an annual far-reaching culture, art and fashion project, will take place in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, on October 23-28, 2011. Now in its sixth year, the event is drawing increasing attention from the international community to Central Asia. Art Week is a crossroads of arts, tradition and modernity. It

offers a rich menu of events and is attended by a host of international celebrities.

Style.Uz Art Week has been organized by the Fund Forum since 2006 in conjunction with partners. The project brings together a large number of international guests in Central Asian cultural hubs such as Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva and Tashkent, a city that has become a unique fusion of the past and the present.

In this mix of colors, dreams and emotions each guest and participant will learn skills in creating, dreaming, feeling and seeing everything that is linked with the colors and traditions of Uzbek and global arts amidst an exciting October cultural razzmatazz.

The Fund Forum, the primary organizer of Style.Uz Art Week, is dedicated to developing international cultural exchange, uniting the efforts of diplomatic and public bodies, helping establish socio-humanitarian and universal ties among countries and diverse national entities. The Fund provides support for talented children and youth, crafts dynasties and art professionals through allocating grants and scholarships while organizing contests, festivals, exhibitions, roundtables and other events both in Uzbekistan and far beyond its confines.

Aimed at helping to develop international cooperation in various types of arts and supporting creative people, Style.Uz is held with support from major local and international organizations and agencies, including the British Council, the French Institute and Goethe-Institut Tashkent among others.

Art Week is an opportunity for young talents with limited financial resources to demonstrate their skills and showcase their collections along with leading international labels and contribute to Art Week as volunteers in various areas of activity.

This year’s Art Week has been given the motto Mix of colors, dreams and emotions and will present multifarious events such as catwalk shows by local Uzbek fashion designers and international fashion houses, a National Dress Festival, theatre plays, exhibitions representing classical and contemporary arts, a Biennale of Contemporary Art, an international cinema forum, charity campaigns, various presentations, concerts, cocktail parties, master classes by renowned professionals and blitz briefings with the youth. About the Biennale The slogan of the 6th Tashkent

International Biennale of Contemporary Art is “Contemporary Art: Artist’s Space and Society”. Artists represent a particular society. Society cannot exist without art as it reflects its values and satisfies its esthetic needs. Nonetheless, an artist consciously emphasizes his or her individuality, with some choosing to be detached or to live in solitude while at the same time needing societal recognition and probing into social aspects and problems through their creative

Throughout Style.Uz Art Week Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan, turns into a hustle and bustle of artistic activity. It offers a string of exhibitions hosted by Tashkent’s leading galleries that give the broad public an opportunity to get a taste of high art in the broadest sense of the word. These include solo exhibitions presenting creations by local and international artists,

photographers, designers and masters of contemporary and traditional arts as well as fashion and design showrooms.

Moreover, in keeping with tradition, Art Week offers major international art projects. This year

they include the 6th Tashkent International Biennale of Contemporary Art scheduled for October 23-29. The opening ceremony for the Biennale will be held on October 23 at 5 p.m. at the Youth Creativity Palace as part of the inauguration of Style.Uz Art Week 2011.

endeavors. This paradoxical state of affairs gives rise to questions on which the 6th Tashkent Biennale will seek to focus: artists’ place and role in societal life, their positions and responsibilities. The dynamic processes in contemporary art have posed a need for a reassessment of these categories by the artistic community.

The Biennale will feature works by over 150 leading artists and art critics from a number of countries, including Afghanistan, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Poland, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Tajikistan, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, the USA, the United Kingdom and Uzbekistan.

The 6th Tashkent International Biennale of Contemporary Art includes the following projects:

SpANISH IMpReSSIONISTS lUIS AMeR, MARTIN cARRAl ANd jORGe NúñeZ

Date and venue: 5 p.m., October 23, 2011, the Youth Creativity Palace

Joan Miró (1893-1983) was a world-renowned Spanish Catalan painter and one of the leaders of 20th-century abstract art and surrealism. Miró has been the inspiration behind a multitude of artists, including comics artists and animators. Miró’s versatile talents can also be seen in other areas such as sculpture, ceramics, scenic design, print graphics and poetry.

Luis Amer was born in 1943. One of the most remarkable things about his paintings

is that the creations look real and masterful, but they are seen as if in dreams. Just as noteworthy is the play of colors in his artworks.

Martin Carral was born in 1959. In his work, Carral puts into perspective not only a certain profound dimension, but also an important play of light. He relies on a variety of techniques to create his oil paintings and other pieces of art.

Jorge Núñez was born in 1954. Núñez is one the artists who create relying on their own intuition and express their feelings in their art. His works are almost void of shapes and details, leaving space for imagination.

Turkey. The territorial, political and historical interconnectedness of these countries unites them in the past and the present. The project comprises contemporary and ethnographic art items. HedONISM: FOOd, BOdy, SOUl” Date and venue: 12 a.m., October 25, 2011,

Hedonism is an esthetic position which argues that human behavior is driven by the desire for pleasure. For instance, Renaissance artists believed that art was supposed to be a source of pleasure for people and awaken interest in learning about life. The dynamic processes in contemporary art have posed a need for a reassessment of Hedonism by the new artistic community. The goal of the exhibition “Esthetics of Hedonism: Food, Body, Soul” is to show the attitude of artists to ethical and esthetic problems in Hedonism. The project seeks to introduce Uzbekistan artists to the global artistic process through unconventional solutions of artistic tasks. This is an international exhibition and will showcase works by both young leading local and prominent international artists from France, the Netherlands, Turkey, Russia and the UK.

Founded in 1961, Yves Saint Laurent is one of the greatest names in the fashion industry of the 20th century. The first couture house to intro-duce the concept of luxury prêt-à-porter in a 1966 collection called ‘Rive Gauche’, Yves Saint Laurent revolutionized the socio-cultural landscape.

In 1999, the luxury goods divi-sion of the PPR Group acquired Yves Saint Laurent and under the creative direction of Stefano Pilati since 2004 has positioned the house at the sum-mit of the luxury universe. It began in the 1930’s in Mantua with Alfredo Corneli-ani, one of the pioneers in the men’s fashion sector in Italy, with hand-tailored raincoats and well-made outerwear that quickly became successful. But it was his sons, Carlalberto and Caudio, who founded Cor-neliani in the second half of the 1950’s and gave it a dimen-sion, an identity, a high stand-ard that made it a landmark in men’s fashion worldwide.

The company began as an artisan business in the his-toric town center of Mantua, a city of art and culture that had its moment of greatest splendor during the Renais-sance. Corneliani is distin-guished for its creativity and stylistic coherence. It creates dreams, desires and delights

for the elegant man. Corneliani creations reflect a dialog between tradition and technology. The char-acteristic processes of grand tailoring, from the cut to the hand finishings, are an integral part of the Corneliani world. Billionaire, a label created by a famous Ital-ian businessman Flavio Briatore, represents an extreme brand of luxury sartorial man’s fash-ion, which at times goes intentionally overboard whilst still remaining refined. one which never loses sight of the real art of tailoring and enhanc-es the personality of those wearing the brand.

The brand has managed to combine made-to-measure and ready-to-wear, attaining a result of the very utmost quality. This is borne out by its shirts, which are stitched and feature pressed-flat seams according to the age-old tailoring tech-nique, with four detachable ribs (plus four gold ribs supplied) under the linen collar; suits made to measure with a transversal Neapolitan cut with gold buttons, entirely linen-finished with hand-stitched oblique buttonholes; classic jack-ets that carry a hint of modern whilst overriding the requirements of new garments; shoes made entirely by hand and fixed with wooden nails and a serial number to guarantee their uniqueness.

robErto cavalli (italy)7 p.m., October 27, the Youth Creativity Palace

Roberto Cavalli was born on November 15, 1940 to a Florentine family of humble means. His mother was a tailor and his grandfather a well-known impressionist painter, both artistic influences that would direct his vocation.

While studying at the Florence Academy of Art, he started experimenting with T-shirt prints, and just for the hell of it, conceived new ways of printing onto other fabrics. It all started when Cavalli and a fellow student discovered how to print on leather, the first time this was ever done.

In the late 60s, Roberto Cavalli set up a factory and created his first line, inspired by art and painting, and which the European elite ate up. He stitched together pieces of leather and denim, and although his patchwork was revolutionary, at the time these fabrics were associated with the working class. Despite the negative association, Italian Vogue started taking notice of the young man.

Over the next 10 years, the European cream of the crop came to Cavalli to see what all the fuss was about. When French actress Brigitte Bardot was seen walking barefoot in one of his designs in St. Tropez, his name exploded. But Cavalli was still considered scandalous and unorthodox, and remained an outsider in the fashion industry.

Roberto Cavalli’s creations with denim and printed leather have always stood at the fringe until recently, as he became one of the most original and sought-out designers around. Christina Aguilera and Alicia Keys always ask

Cavalli to design their tour costumes, while David Beckham, Bono and Lenny Kravitz are among his biggest fans.

In 2002, out of the 750 menswear labels shown at the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, Cavalli was picked as the favorite. That same year, Fashion Group International named Roberto Cavalli Designer of the Year. He used his momentum to launch his fragrance, "Roberto Cavalli Parfum," and even launched a home collection.

The Roberto Cavalli clientele includes big-name celebrities such as Madonna, Cindy Crawford, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Tina Turner, Halle Berry, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Elton John, Cher, Lenny Kravitz, Jon Bon Jovi and Bono.

Ermanno scErvino (italy)4 p.m., October 26, the Youth Creativity Palace

Ermanno Scervino was born in Milan but spent many years in Florence. ''The king of sports fashion'' as he was called by the press, starting from his debut commuted between Paris and London and always demonstrated his gravita-tion for multifunctional multinational style.

Self-taught, after a stint in Paris followed by a period studying architecture in Italy, he learnt everything he knows from Italian mentors in the fields of luxury goods and fashion design. Trained in all the best techniques, he worked with the most prestigious workshops and the most beautiful fabrics. Having spent ten years work-ing in the shadows of the greatest designers, he felt the time had come to found his own self-financing label and use it to express his taste for architecture - but this time, for that of the body.

Right from the start, he was full of original-ity; aiming to offer sporty couture styling based on evening jackets, fitted like corsets, sophisti-cated, rare, as treasured as pieces of lingerie. Italian women snapped them up without a second glance. Right from the very first catwalk show, orders came flooding in. All the best boutiques wanted to sell this new designer who captured the spirit of the times; offering iconoclastic, free-spirited and innovative luxury, with no danger of unexpected combinations of fabrics and cuts.

Victor de Souza was born into a Portuguese fam-ily in Buenos Aires, Argen-tina.

At the age of fourteen Victor de Souza enrolled in a couture academy in Argen-tina, he later studied at two other Argentinean couture academies and CETIC (Cen-tro De Estudios Tecnicos Para La Industria De La Con-feccion). In school, he quickly acquired a reputation as a perfectionist because of his obsession with constructing garments that fit the form perfectly. He designed his first collection in Argentina by the age of eighteen.

Victor de Souza’s clothes exude a powerful and protective quality that women love and appreciate. The highly structural shapes and lines found in his clothes transform the pieces into ar-mor for the everyday wom-an. His silhouettes are su-perbly tailored, elegant and sexy, while his colors are vibrant and his fabrics and embellishments add just the right amount of glamour.

gianfranco fErré (italy)4 p.m., October 26, the Youth Creativity Palace

Ferré began his fashion career in 1970 by designing accessories, then worked as a rain-coat designer in 1972-74. He started his own company Baila in 1974 and launched his sig-nature collection for women in 1978. His first men's collection appeared in 1982, followed in 1986 by his first couture collection in Rome. Ferré became Stylistic Director of Christian Dior in Paris in 1989, when he was chosen by own-er Bernard Arnault to replace Marc Bohan. In 1996, it was announced that Ferré would end his engagement with Dior with the Spring 1997 collection for the label.

Formally trained as an architect, Italian designer Gianfranco Ferré launched his first signature womenswear collection in 1978, fol-lowed shortly with a men's collection in 1982, fragrance in 1984, and a couture line by 1986. Known for its crisp lines, exact cutting, and vis-ible seams, Ferré’s label was influenced by his first trips to Asia.

Defined by an east-meets-West aesthetic that vehemently rejects high-fashion trends, the house built its look on rigorously con-structed, but casual, garments–like Ferré’s fa-mously crisp white dress shirts decked with lay-ered cuffs, collars, and ruffles. Sharply tailored dresses, suits, and structured ballroom skirts in ultraluxe fabrics and rich colors were recurring players in Ferré’s simple but elegant roster.

In the nineties, the house branched out with sportier ready-to-wear, fur, and high-end ac-cessories under FERRÉ Milano, and sportswear divisions for jeans, children’s, and lower-priced accessories–consolidated in 2005 under the GF FeRRÉ line. After Ferré’s death in 2007, Lars Nilsson was brought on as creative director for less than a year before being replaced by 6267 designers Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Ri-mondi in April 2008. Their first collection (spring 2009) won acclaim for honoring Ferré’s legacy of controlled femininity while modernizing the label with their stiff, geometric dresses in curve-conscious shapes. Presently, the label is headed by Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Rimondi.

During the workshops they proposed a team method and work in groups on the creation of items from Uzbek fabrics: shoes, bags, headwear and accessories. The results impressed both the trainers and the trainees, who then asked the college administration to consider incorporating into the curriculum the methods proposed by the Uzbek specialists.
