DESCRIPTION

The Art Unbound juried student art show is a university-wide competition produced in partnership by the LSU Press and the LSU School of Art that seeks the highest quality of students’ artistic expression in visual art. Using books as the subject (and medium if you choose), we ask students to create a work of visual art inspired by the deep relationship between visual arts and the written word. We encourage inventive interpretation, creative use of materials, and memorable exploration of this theme. Accepted work will be featured in the 2012 Art Unbound student art show at LSU’s Foster Gallery.

ART UNBOUND : URBANATUREjuried student art show

February 3-17, 2012

Overview: For centuries, visual arts and the written word have shared a special connection. As old as wall paintings and pictographs this relationship is rich and varied, ranging from elegant decoration of medieval illumination to today’s graphic novels. As new technologies enable artists to define this relationship in new ways, the connection continues to permeate our culture. Often visual art operates as a complement to the written word. But visual arts can also transform words to communicate new and different meanings. At its most powerful, visual art becomes a text itself.

The underlying aim of the Art Unbound juried student art show is to celebrate the deep connection between visual art and the written word. We believe that students’ artistic interpretations of this theme will help support LSU Press’s mission to achieve excellence in publishing by spreading awareness about the good work of the Press.

The LSU Press and the LSU School of Art will partner to showcase student artwork at LSU’s Foster Gallery from February 3-17, 2012.

Juror: The significance of this visual art competition is reinforced by the expertise of our jurors. The panel of jurors for this competition will include:

Dan Cameron, Founding & Artistic Director of Prospect New Orleans

Jacqueline Dee Parker, Artist, Poet, and LSU CoA+D Instructor

Tomas N. Whitehead, Professor Emeritus Journalism, Northwestern State University,LSU Press author of Clementine Hunter: Cane River Artist (Spring 2012).

Theme: The aim of this student art show is to celebrate the connection between visual art and the written word. Artwork should focus on the relationship between visual arts and literature. We encourage entrants to interpret this statement with creativity, paying special attention to the LSU Press’s mission. Participants should use the 2011 School of Art theme URBANATURE as inspiration for their work. Consider the book as a textual landscape filled with the same kinds of contrasts and conflicts that confront nature and urban society, juxtapose the origins of book materials with the book’s innate connection to society, or let LSU Press’s list of titles to inspire your creation, such as Lake Douglas’ Public Spaces Private Gardens, Craig Colten’s An Unnatural Metropolis: Wresting New Orleans from Nature, or Peder Anker’s From Bauhaus to Ecohouse: A History of Ecological Design. Given the interpretive nature of this project, we suggest all entrants include an artistic statement.

Entry: Electronic entry is available online at: http://art.lsu.edu.

Deadline: Submissions must be received online by December 9, 2011 at 6:00 PM.

Additional information: Entrants must be current LSU students enrolled in at least 3.0 credits for the fall 2011 semester. Students are limited to one entry per person.Because of the interpretive nature of this competition, entrants will be asked to submit a short artistic statement describing their submission and purpose.

Cash prizes awarded include:—First place winner will receive $500 in cash. —Second place winner will receive a $300 cash prize.—Third place winner will receive a $150 cash prize.—LSU Press Favorite: $100 cash prize and winner’s art will be featured on the cover of a forthcoming LSU Press seasonal catalog (over 10,000 copies distributed worldwide in addition to web access at lsupress.org)—LSU School of Art Purchase Prize: winner will receive $100 cash prize.
