Blues & BBQ HotspotSaturday, August 20

Back by popular demand after serving up a birds-eye view of pitmasters at work — not to mention thousands of delectable BBQ samples happily gobbled up by festival-goers — our 3rd Annual Oaktown Throwdown BBQ Competition is a true crowd-pleaser. 40 top professional pitmasters and backyard teams from all over California bring savory aromas of beef, chicken, pork and ribs sizzling on the grill. Festival-goers can once again feast on smokin’ samples for a small sampling fee — while supplies last — and vote for their favorite! The Oaktown Throwdown is a fully sanctioned Kansas City Barbeque Society and California Barbecue Association “Team of the Year” competition which means that participants are competing for the attention of accredited judges and cash prizes, in addition to trophies hand-crafted by local artists. New this year — The Oaktown Throwdown and Blues stage will be clustered together on 12th Street — creating a single stop for savoring BBQ samples and a cold brew while catching live blues up close!

West Coast Blues Society Stage This year, the BBQ competition and blues stage will be clustered together on 12th Street, making it easier to savor BBQ samples and a cold beer while catching live Blues up-close. Legendary slide guitarist and singer/songwriter Sonny Rhodes headlines the always-crowd pleasing show also featuring Tebo’s Howlin’ Wolf Revue, Oakland Blues Divas: DeJean Burkes, Lady Chico, and Xymphoni, and many other blues greats hailing from Oakland, the birthplace of west coast blues music.

Edwin Hawkins’ Gospel ShowcaseAlso on Saturday, the festival continues its tradition of hosting a powerful Gospel Showcase presented by the famed Edwin Hawkins and Community of Unity. A trailblazing force behind the evolution of contemporary gospel, Hawkins is perhaps best known for his 1969 classic “Oh Happy Day,” one of the biggest gospel hits of all time and a major pop radio smash. This year’s rousing lineup features national recording artist Chrystal Rucker, Derrick Hall & Company, Dale Anthony & Faith Out Loud, Sangn Sistas of Northern California, The Harvesters, Porter Brothers & Genesis Choir and many more!

Oakland Jams Stage Saturday’s big show is capped by an eclectic all-Oakland lineup on the Clay Street Stage. Indie folk band Willow Steps will open, combining the introspective tunes of singer/songwriter Jesse Strickman with the angelic, textural harmonies of vocalist Leiya Mahoney. Zeal Levin & Friends will rev up the audience with bluesy funk rock, and popular local funksters The Funkanauts will have the crowd on its feet and dancing. The John Brothers Piano Company, fresh off a stellar performance at Stern Grove, will close the show with its energetic throwback sound that “evokes the honky-tonk ghosts of Barbary Coast” (SF Chronicle). The band’s explosive symphonic experience birthed from popular sidewalk street shows has propelled them to theatres and festival stages throughout the country, including Monterey Jazz Festival and numerous others.

Oakland Symphony New this year – an interactive instrument petting zoo hosted by the acclaimed Oakland Symphony. Festival-goers of all ages are invited to pick up and play horns, strings and other instruments under the tutelage of local musicians and music instructors. The instrument petting zoo will take place all day on the plaza lawn. A brass quintet from the Symphony will perform from 3 – 6pm on the plaza stage. (Saturday only)

An ensemble from the acclaimed Oakland Public Conservatory of Music (OPCM) will perform and the institution will be honored with a “key to the city” in honor of its 10th anniversary. Oakland’s only music conservatory, OPCM was established by founding director and famed trombone player Angela Wellman.

All Star UndergroundSunday, August 21 2pm – 5pmClay Street Stage, 14th & ClayA renegade showcase of Oakland’s vibrant underground performance scene! The eclectic program features break-dancers, circus performers, story-tellers, comedians, slam poets, contortionists, beat-boxers, and interactive audience hijinx. Main Stage Performances

Sunday, August 21

On Sunday, the festival continues its tradition of celebrating star talent straight out of Oakland as the KBLX 102.9 FM stage hosts national recording artists Tony Toni Toné. One of the biggest R&B acts of the ‘80s and ‘90s, their stats are impressive by any music industry standards, past or present: 14 Billboard- charting R&B singles, including five No. 1 hits and three top 10 pop singles; one gold album; two platinum albums; one double-platinum album and over 6 million albums sold. The Tony Toni Toné sound is soulful, organic, classic, and instantly recognizable. Their ability to create songs that perfectly married the stylings of the soul and funk gods of the ‘70s with the technology and hip-hop infused R&B of the ‘90s made them icons of their generation.

The always standing-room-only stage will also feature award–winning R&B and jazz singer, songwriter and actress Chanté Moore. Since arriving on the R&B scene over 15 years ago via her sensual debut single “Love’s Taken Over,” Moore has flourished into an accomplished artist with more than 5 million albums and singles sold. A San Francisco native, Moore propelled to stardom with Billboard singles “It’s Alright,” “This Time” and the No. 2 smash “Chante’s Got a Man.” Her 2013 album “Moore Is More” was synchronized with R&B Divas: Los Angeles, a TV One reality program in which the singer starred along with fellow R&B artists Dawn Robinson of En Vogue and Kelly Price.

Opening the KBLX stage will be Oakland-born rising R&B sensation Samaria, an amazing young talent whose music embodies self-love and mindfulness. Despite being just 19 years old, Samaria’s artistry is destined to make her a timeless artist. Samaria’s EP “The Story of Right Now” is seasoned with soulful production, live instruments, outstanding vocals and inspired story telling (the EP is accompanied by a short film of the same name). Her songwriting brings to life vivid adaptations of relationships, heartache and life lessons
