An Art Medium
• In art a medium is a material that an artist uses to create his or her artwork.
• Medium is the singular form and media is the plural form of the word.
• There are a wide variety of art media including pencil, pen, watercolor, acrylic, oil, stone, and steel to name a few.
Drawing
• Drawing is the basic and most common art media.
• The main Drawing media are pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, and pastel.
• Each of these media have their own special characteristics.
Pencil
• Pencil is the most common and available drawing medium.
• Pencils are used for making quick sketches or fine detailed drawings.
• They are easy to use and allow the artist to blend and shade easily
Charcoal
• Charcoal is a medium used by most artist to create quick sketches or drawings.
• Charcoal is very similar to chalk. It leaves a fine dust as you draw with it.
• It is very good for shading and blending.
Pen and Ink
• Pen and Ink is used to create detailed drawings.
•There are several pen and ink techniques: hatching, cross hatching, stippling and ink washes.
Pastel• Pastels come in two forms
chalk and oil pastels. • Chalk pastels are dry and
similar to charcoal. They are good for colorful drawings. They blend well but are messy because of the dust they leave behind.
• Oil pastels are oil based and can be applied thickly. They are easy to blend.
• Oil pastels can be used with mineral spirits to create images similar to oil paintings.
