Hilma af KlintPaintings for the Future

Edited with text by Tracy Bashkoff. Contributions by Tessel M. Bauduin, Daniel Birnbaum, Briony Fer, Vivien Greene, David Max Horowitz, Andrea Kollnitz, Helen Molesworth and Julien Voss. 2018. Guggenheim Museum Publications. Quarto with full color paper over boards. 244 pages with 220 color plates. New Book $65.00

“When Swedish artist Hilma af Klint died in 1944 at the age of 81, she left behind more than 1,000 paintings and works on paper that she had kept largely private during her lifetime. Believing the world was not yet ready for her art, she stipulated that it should remain unseen for another 20 years. But only in recent decades has the public had a chance to reckon with af Klint’s radically abstract painting practice—one which predates the work of Vasily Kandinsky and other artists widely considered trailblazers of modernist abstraction. Her boldly colorful works, many of them large-scale, reflect an ambitious, spiritually informed attempt to chart an invisible, totalizing world order through a synthesis of natural and geometric forms, textual elements and esoteric symbolism.” Hilma af Klint was steeped in Theosophical thought and practice and her work is emerging from obscurity and bringing with it light for modern esotericism.

Hilma af Klint: Notes and Methods

Edited by Christine Burgin. Introduction and commentary by Iris Muller-Westermann. With translations by Kerstin Lind Bonnier, Elizabeth Clark Wessel and Anne Posten. 2018. Christine Burgin and University of Chicago Press. Quarto. 288 pages. Full color facsimile of af Klint’s notebook studies on her paintings. Text in English translations. New Book $45.00

“Notes and Methods presents facsimile reproductions of a wide array of af Klint’s early notebooks accompanied by the first English translation of af Klint’s extensive writings. It contains the rarely seen “Blue Notebooks,” hand-painted and annotated catalogues af Klint created of her most famous series “Paintings for the Temple,” and a dictionary compiled by af Klint of the words and letters found in her work. This extraordinary collection is edited by and copublished with Christine Burgin, and features an introduction by Iris Müller-Westermann. It will stand as an important and timely contribution to the legacy of Hilma af Klint.”

Hildegard von Bingen: A Journey into the Images

Edited with Text by Sara Salvadori. 2019. Skira. Large quarto. 224 pages with 136 color illustrations. New Book $55.00

“In obedience to the voice of God, von Bingen wrote down her visions in a precious manuscript, with images added to make the story come alive. This volume brings Hildegard’s visionary text, in all its dense symbolism and prophetic sweep, alive to contemporary readers. At the core of the book are the manuscript’s 35 miniatures, reproduced at their original size alongside an accompanying key. Each element of the images—colors, frames, forms, numbers—was precisely chosen and leads deeper into the meaning of the work; the key decodes these symbols in each image and concisely describes each vision. A text by musician and scholar Sara Salvadori crosses the entire work, highlighting these interlinking details and revealing Hildegard’s dense, unified design. This volume presents Hildegard von Bingen’s endlessly compelling prophetic text in all its inspired beauty.” Absolutely the best book on Hildegard von Bingen’s art available.

Ira Cohen: Into the Mylar Chamber

Edited with text by Allan Graubard. Text by Ira Cohen, Timothy Baum, Ian MacFadyen, Alice Farley, Ira Landgartenand Thurston Moore. 2019. Fulgur Press. 144 pages, 80 color plates and 3 black-and-white. Silver blocked cover in full color printed dust jacket. New Book $50.00

“Between 1968 and 1971, in a loft on New York’s Jefferson Street, the poet, photographer and filmmaker Ira Cohen created some of the most mythic images of the late 1960s. Inspired by his friends Jack Smith and Bill Devore, Cohen’s initial experiments with black light developed into an experimental ritual space he termed the Mylar Chamber—a simple room of hinged boards hung with reflective Mylar film. Through his extended network, and with the support of artist and set designer Robert LaVigne, Cohen invited visitors to play another self within this small theater, among them Jimi Hendrix, William Burroughs, Vali Myers, Jack Smith, Angus MacLise, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Lionel Ziprin, Ching Ho Cheng, Petra Vogt, Charles Ludlam, John McLaughlin and the rock group Spirit. In December 1969, in a summary of the past decade, Life magazine declared that “few came as close to explaining the euphoric distortions of hallucinogenics” as Cohen through his Mylar Chamber photographs, but the full story draws upon much deeper ideas surrounding identity and the power of the image. This is the first book to explore Cohen’s iconic Mylar Chamber photographs.” New Book $50.00

Remedios VaroLetters, Dreams, and Other Writings

Introduction and translation by Margaret Carson. 2018. Wakefield Press. Small octavo in printed French flaps. 128 pages with a 1 color and 3 black-and-white illustrations. New Book $15.00

“While the reputation of Remedios Varo (1908–63) the surrealist painter is now well established, Remedios Varo the writer has yet to be fully discovered. Her writings, which were never published during her life let alone translated into English, present something of a missing chapter and offer the same qualities to be found in her visual work: an engagement with mysticism and magic, a breakdown of the border between the everyday and the marvelous, a love of mischief and an ongoing meditation on the need for (and the trauma of) escape in all its forms.”

Remedios Varo: The Mexican Years

Text by Masayo Nonaka. 2012. RM. Quarto. 120 pages illustrated with color plates. New Book $45.00

“Remedios Varo: The Mexican Years offers a definitive survey of the life and work of a singularly appealing and mysterious Surrealist painter. Born and raised in Spain, Remedios Varo received her earliest training in Madrid before fleeing the Spanish Civil War in 1937 to join Surrealist circles in Paris. The outbreak of World War II forced her to take refuge in Mexico, where she remained until her untimely death in 1963, and where she created her most enduring work. Known as one of the three “brujas” (witches) active in the Mexico City art milieu, Varo shared an interest in esotericism with fellow painter Leonora Carrington and a range of interests in science, philosophy and the literature of German Romanticism with the photographer Kati Horna. For some ten years, from the mid–1950s until her death in 1963, Varo devoted herself to creating an extraordinary dreamlike oeuvre, on the threshold between mysticism and modernity. Her beautifully crafted images of medieval interiors, occult workshops and androgynous figures engaged in alchemical pursuits evoke the eerie allegories of Hieronymus Bosch, esoteric engravings and the charm and lure of fairytales. This catalogue includes a complete illustrated chronology with never before published images and describes Varo’s role in the Mexican Surrealist movement and her relations with Luis Buñuel, Octavio Paz, Benjamin Péret, Alice Rahon, Wolfgang Paalen and many others.”

Becoming Invisible

Small octavo. 48 pages. 20 color plates and 3 in black-and-white. 2019. The Everyday Press. Printed paper over boards. New Book $25.00

Both an artist’s book and a would-be practical guide, this beautiful little book offers occult instructions for becoming invisible by meditating on the color spectrum. It draws on the literature of Rosicrucianism, theosophy and esoteric yoga to demonstrate how, through breathing exercises and visualization, the reader can learn to split light into its constituent parts, then recombine the seven colours of the spectrum to form a glowing white cloud that envelops its creator, rendering him or her invisible.

Its author, London-based artist Ian Whittlesea—well known for his book works based on spiritual-physical exercises, such as Yves Klein: The Foundations of Judo and Mazdaznan Health & Breath Culture—notes in the preface: “These exercises are intended to allow you to become invisible. This does not, however, mean that you will physically disappear or dematerialize. Instead you will be hidden from view, concealed within a cloud of your own creation.”Gorgeous colour abstractions by Whittlesea illustrate the book throughout.

On Colour . . .

Small octavo. 52 pages. 20 color plates and 4 in black-and-white. The Everyday Press. Printed paper over boards. New Book $28.00

On Colour… extends the theories of color harmony that Joahnnes Itten taught at the Bauhaus and describes how “through perfect control of breath and color one will eventually be able to generate a luminous cloud of such purity and intensity that it renders all inside it invisible.

Beautifully designed and printed, it describes how one can, potentially, produce the “white cloud of invisibility” and documents the author’s own attempts to manifest the cloud.

These manifestations have a complex group of antecedents that include Lawrence Weiner’s early spray-painted works, John Latham’s One Second Drawings, Robert Irwin’s luminous disc paintings of the 1960s and representations of the ineffable made by spiritualists and occultists.

New Book $55.00
