Haiku

Haiku is a kind of poem famous in Japan. It has been written for hundreds of years and the most famous poet is Matsuo Basho who was born in 1644 anddied in 1694. A good Haiku is like a photograph. When you read it you can seethe situation.

Haiku has a special pattern of 5-7-5 syllables. For example:

古池や furu ike ya 5 The old pond -

蛙飛び込む kawazu tobikomu 7 a frog jumps in

水の音 mizu no oto 5 Sound of water

To write traditional Japanese Haiku you have to have a season word (kigo 季語).

この道や Kono michi ya Along this road

行く人なしに yuku hito nashini Goes no one,

秋のくれ  aki no kure This Autumn eve.

However Basho didn’t always have this!

There are many Haiku poems written by people from around the world, but the rules of composition havechanged. In English Haiku, and some Japanese Haiku too, you do not need a season word and you do notneed to have 5-7-5 syllables.

Here is the winner from a Haiku competition in Ehime in 1990. It was written by a man from Yugoslavia!

After the storm 5  A boy wiping the sky 6 From the tables 5

Here are some more examples of English Haiku:
