Why is it so important to fund the AGN?

The AGN is an important community builder in our community. In addition to our inherent value to society, we offer a distinctiveblend of benefits which include:

Economic Drivers: the arts create jobs, stimulate business activity, and attract tourism.

Educational Assets: the arts cultivate young imaginations and provide critical-thinking, communications and innovative skills essential to todays workforce. In addition, the AGN provides engagement and involvement for our community volunteers for adults, seniors, youth and families.

Health and Wellness: the arts foster physical, mental and emotional health.

Civic Pride: the AGN creates a welcoming sense of place and a desirable quality of life. We offer Civic Pride for our community through our changing exhibitions and permanent collection. We are a public space available for free that creates community culture and we are available to all.

Cultural Legacy: the AGN preserves culture and heritage, passing along a community’s unique character and traditions to future generation of citizens.

The arts are a public good – not merely a consumer product – because everyone benefits from the arts not just those who attend. A thriving community sector creates a positive ripple effect throughout our community and we all benefit from inclusiveaccess to arts activities and experiences.

We are a Category A Designated Institution. The AGN is 1 of 28 in Ontario out of 100 Galleries, museums and public authorities designated by the Minister of Canadian Heritage. In 2018 we dedicated 6 months to have our designation reinstated. This is a key achievement for the AGN during our 2018 year of transition. We added $30,000 in works of art to our collection in 2018.

We collect, preserve, present, and interpret works of art. We ignite the power of art, embracing our responsibility to engage and educate our community, contribute to cultural knowledge and advance creative endeavour.
