ART ELEMENTS and PRINCIPLES of Design These are the basic building blocks of art like a noun in a sentence.
Elements of Art These are the basic building blocks of art like anoun in a sentence. Line Shape Color Value Texture Space Form There are three ways to change line:
Line is the path of a moving point Line There are three ways to change line: Line Direction Line Speed Line weight Line Direction horizontal at rest vertical still at attention

Grant Wood Georgia O'Keefe Modern Art: What do you think about modern art? Abstract art is nonrepresentational. How could this art be so simple and sell for $30,000? Piet Mondrian Bridget Riley Compare how these modern artists incorporated lines into their art ? is the area set off by one or more of the art elements.
Shape Shapes can be classified into two classes: *Geometric shapes = precise shapes such as the circle, triangle , rectangle, oval, and square. *Organic shapes = these shapes are not regular or evenand are often found in nature. The rock art "adds to our knowledge of the animal's appearance that, without the discovery of a mummified animal, would have remained conjecture," says the study. "The artist has depicted a tail with tufted tip, the ears are pointed rather than rounded [and] the animal is striped, rather than spotted." The marsupial lion (Thylacoleo carnifex) is well known from the fossil record. Near complete skeletons have been known since the 1960s and the first complete skeleton was unearthed in 2002 in a Nullarbor Plain cave by researchers from the Western Australian Museum. From these finds scientists know that Thylacoleo was front heavy, with large, strong forelimbs. They also had vicious claws and razor-sharp teeth, making them ferocious predators. However, as the species has been extinct for tens of thousands of years (some estimates suggest 30,000 years, but direct dating of the fossils has not been completed), experts don't know exactly what they looked like. They're also unsure what drove them extinct and even if they were still around when the first Aborigines arrived on the continent. What type of art is this? What are fractals? If this was produced by a computer is a work of art? Modern Art, Picasso, Hitler Form is an object with three dimensions.
In drawing, it is creating the illusion of three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface. The first known paintings in geometric optical linear perspective were made by Brunelleschi in about His biographer, Antonio Manetti, described this famous experiment in which Brunelleschi painted two panels; the first of the Florentine Baptistery as viewed frontally from the western portal of the unfinished cathedral, and second the Palazzo Vecchio as seen obliquely from its northwest corner. Color The primary colors of art
are very different from the primary colors of science. primary colors of science
The primary colors primary colors of art primary colors of science What are the primary colors of pigments or art? green blue and red Yellow = art Blue = science
The color wheel Yellow = art Blue = science Red, blue and yellow Red, blue and green What primary colorsdo science and art have in common? What happens if you mix red and green light? What happens if you mix red and green pigments? Primary Colors Primary colors are the original colors. These cannot be made by mixing any other colors. They are the building block colors from which all other colors originate. The three primary colors of art are: Red Yellow Blue Secondary Colors Primary Colors Intermediate Color PRIMARY COLORS Secondary colors are created by mixing two primary colors.
Red + Yellow= Orange Yellow + Blue = Green Blue+Red = Violet Secondary Colors Seurat Vincent van Gogh a primary color with its neighboring secondary color.
Intermediate Colors Intermediate colors (also known as tertiary colors) are colors created by mixing a primary color with its neighboring secondary color. Examples would be: Red Red Violet VioletRed Violet Violet Blue Blue Violet Blue Blue Green Green Blue Green Green yellow Yellow Green Yellow Yellow Orange Orange Yellow Orange Orange Red Red Orange Analogous Colors Color Shades The SHADE of a color is changed by adding black. Color Tints Add a small amount of color to white. The exception to this would be by watercolorists -who add water! Value is the lightness or darkness of
a hue. To change the value of a color You add white (or water in watercolors) to change its TINT and Black to change its shade. Monochromatic means the same thing.. Value Value Value Monochromatic:one color mixed with black or white Harlequin with Guitar The Scream Texture is how something feels or looks like it feels
Texture is how something feels or looks like it feels. We experience texture thru our senses of sight and touch *Natural or actual Is what you experience when you actually touch an object. *Artificial: Man-man made *Simulated=art Space is the distance or area
between, around, below, and within things. negative positive negative Look at this image by Mary Cassatt and distinguish between the positive space and the negative space! is the illusion of depth
Space is the illusion of depth 1.= Overlapping 2.= Size 3.= Details and focus 4.= Value 5.= Linear Perspective Op Art Bridget Riley Raise your hand and tell us what you see? How does this create the illusion of space. Is this deep or tall? Ascending or descending? Does it move toward you or away from you? Is there one answer or two correct answers to each of these questions? Value!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! space Escher Space 1.OVERLAPPING is when the artist has one shape in front of the other. SPACE:2.SIZE distant shapes are
smaller than closer ones. Space Artists add more 3. detail or focus to objects in the foreground, less detail to objects in the background. SPACE Space Value: Artists often used colors lower in intensity and lighter in value for objects in the distance. Space 5. Linear Perspective The Tribute MoneyBy Masaccio
Can you find the vanishing point in this picture? Earliest example of one point linear perspective. 1425 The school of Athens by RaphaelThe School of Athens, or Scuola di Atene in Italian, is one of the most famous paintings by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael. It was painted between 1510 and 1511 as a part of Raphael's commission to decorate with frescoes the rooms now known as the Stanze di Raffaello, in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. The Stanza della Segnatura was the first of the rooms to be decorated, and The School of Athens the second painting to be finished there, after La Disputa, on the opposite wall. The picture has long been seen as "Raphael's masterpiece and the perfect embodiment of the classical spirit of the High Renaissance 15th century illustration from the Old French translation of William of Tyre's Histoire d'Outremer. There is clearly a general attempt to reduce the size of more distant elements, but unsystematically. Sections of the composition are at a similar scale, with relative distance shown by overlapping, foreshortening, and further objects being higher than nearer ones, though the workmen at left do show finer adjustment of size. Two point linear perspective In art, PROPORTION is how parts of a
work relate to each other and to the whole. The size of one thing compared to the size of another. It is not the shape of one thing compared to the shape of another. Manga proportions Proportions Linear Perspective Compare and contrast:
Always has diagonal lines Creates the illusion of space Has a vanishing point Lines are used as a guide to tell us how big or how small you make an object Can be any line or form Does not always create the illusion of space Does not have a vanishing point Also used to draw an object the right size Remember the differences by the letter V in perspective. Perspective is using diagonal lines like the diagonal lines in the letter V. The Principles of Art are basically rules or guidelines that describe the way in which the Art Elements work together. They are like the verbs in a sentence. EMPHASISE BALANCE CONTRAST *RHYTHM and repeat UNITY or unify Movement or move Mr. Cube is a way to remember the Principles. This is called an anagram. EMPHASIS is also used by the artist to
EMPHASIS is used by an artist to make an element or object stand out in a work of art. EMPHASISis used by the artist to control What part of the artwork the viewer sees most or most often. EMPHASIS is also used by the artist to control how long a viewer spends looking at each of the different parts. MOVEMENT in a work of art directs the viewer
through the art piece often to the focal area. It also encourages the viewer to sense action within the work. V Repetition /Rhythm is the repeating
of shapes, lines, color, or other art elements in planned or random order to create interest, or make the artwork more exciting. Unity is when everything works together to achieve a single goal. What was the goal of this architect?
What do the forms suggest or communicate? CONTRAST in an artwork is created-when the artist makes a difference in value,
color, texture, shape, line, formor space. Line and Shape Contrast
By Van Gogh BALANCE in an artwork is the
arrangement of art elements so that no one part of a work overpowers, or seems heavier than, any other part. *Symmetrical *Radial Balance*Asymmetrical Emphasis of size Emphasis:
To make an element or object in a work of art stand Out..artists use emphasis. Emphasisof size Emphasis of color Emphasis of line Joe Montanna
