Art & Design Year 7

Programme of Study

Overview In Year 7, pupils learn about the formal elements of Art and Design. They understand the importance of drawing as a basis for all of their Art and Design work and initially focus on observational drawing, using shade and tone. Pupils analyse different Artists work and study how and why Artists work in a realistic way and in an abstract way. Pupils explore the use of abstract colour in Art and learn about colour theory. Pupils learn about Art as a means of expression. There is also a cross curricular project in Year 7, across the Arts faculty, on the theme of Manchester. This gives pupils greater awareness of the community that they belong to and introduces them to using clay to produce work that is three dimensional.

Assessment Work is continually assessed in Art and Design. Informal verbal feedback is given in every lesson and pupils regularly discuss each other’s work, giving positive comments and advice on how work can develop. Peer assessment is carried out at the end of a task and written feedback is given by the teacher, including a grade for the module of work.

Enrichment & Reward

Art Club is available for pupils 4 lunchtimes of the week. Out of school visits are organised to appropriate exhibition to enrich the pupils Art and Design education. There is an Arts trail around the school site, providing inspiration for the pupils and this is continually being added to. We have worked with professional Artists on projects with pupils both in school and off site. Pupils have the opportunity to enter Art and Design competitions from external sources, with valuable rewards. Work is celebrated through exhibitions around the school, including in the Paragon Gallery.
