Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch artist who painted portraits, and landscapes.
He used watercolours and oil paints.
He is famous for using bright colours and bold brushstrokes in his work.
He painted in a style that became known as ‘Post-Impressionism’.

When van Gogh first started painting, he used dark colours, such as black and brown. This is his first major work, and is a painting of poor
farmers eating their dinner.

Van Gogh began using bright, contrasting colours like blue and orange.
He experimented with making different marks with paint, such as swirling.
Life in FranceIn 1886, van Gogh moved to Paris in France.
He discovered work by a group of artists called Impressionists.
They used visible brushstrokes and bright colours.
