Everything IP... Everywhere

ARRIS Cadant® C4®CMTS Evolution to

DOCSIS® 3.0

The ARRIS Cadant C4 CMTS represents the highest performance, most scalable, and most flexible platform in the CMTS industry.

• Hitless hardware failover and software upgrade• Customer-specific configuration of spare groups

• Hot-swap capability for all modules

With the introduction of DOCSIS 3.0 specifications, the architectural advantages and powerful features of the

C4 CMTS will provide operators with a seamless migration cost-effective deployment solution.

DOCSIS® 3.0 INITIATIVES

CADANT C4 CMTS AND DOCSIS 3.0ADVANTAGES

The DOCSIS 3.0 specification initiative is a response to cable operators’ need to harness new technological developments to be able to offer:

• greater bandwidth through wideband channel bonding• access to more IP address via implementation of IPV6• interoperability of VPN via standardization• enhanced security management

The purpose of these features is to open new revenue streams, reduceoperational costs and provide a solution to competitive pressure from FTTx and xDSL.

One of the major DOCSIS 3.0 considerations is the bonding of multiple DOCSIS channels to allow delivery of very high speed data services to consumers or businesses. High speed meanshigh satisfaction.

• The channel bonding solution that enables these very high speeds was conceived and developed by ARRIS

• The architecture of existingC4 CMTSs with this channel bonding and a Touchstone wideband modem enablesdelivery of exciting new services and features thatdemand 100Mbps performance

• CMTS support for IPv6 will provide additional flexibility for operators as they engineer their networks to alleviate the restrictions on address space resulting from IPv4

• VPN Standardization is built into DOCSIS 3.0, This specificationdescribes Layer 2 VPN function targeted primarily at businessapplications that will expand MSOs’ business services offerings

• C4 CMTSs equipped with DOCSIS 3.0 will allow co-existance of wideband, DOCSIS 2.0 or 1.x and DOCSIS 3.0 cable modems.

ARRIS maintains a strong involvement within CableLabs®, including engineering representation and specification contributions in each of theDOCSIS 3.0 Working Groups. This involvement helps ensure full understandingof the DOCSIS 3.0 specifications for the C4 CMTS. ARRIS is confident that thearchitecture of the C4 CMTS, with its inherent advantages of high availability, high performance, and high scalability, will enable a smooth, successfulmigration to DOCSIS 3.0 for its customers.

Unlike competitors’ solutions, bonded channels in the C4 CMTS do not requirecontiguous RF spectrum or dedicated downstream RF channels. The channelbonding architecture in the C4 CMTS allows any number ofdownstreams/upstreams from any combination of DOCSIS Cable AccessModules (CAMs) to be bonded together within a particular chassis. To provideIPv6 support, ARRIS will introduce the Router Control Module (RCM) to replacethe existing Fabric Control Module (FCM) and Network Access Module (NAM).This module also delivers 10Gigabit WAN interfaces and has the capability ofsubtending other network devices, such as the ARRIS Keystone™ D5™ DMTSEdge QAM, via Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. The subtended D5 DMTS allows asimple economic path to expand downstream capacity.

INVESTMENT PROTECTION AND SYSTEM MIGRATION

With the addition of the RCM and related software, the C4 CMTS will be fully compatiblewith DOCSIS 3.0. The ability to offer DOCSIS 3.0-enabled features on existing C4 CMTS hardwareincluding 2Dx12U CAMs, the System ControlModule (SCM), and the chassis itself provides alevel of investment protection unmatched in theindustry. Migrating a C4 CMTS to DOCSIS 3.0will be a smooth process involving performing asystem software upgrade, substituting RCMs forFCMs, removing NAMs, and reconnecting WANinterfaces. While other vendors’ proposalsrequire replacement of RF modules and reconnecting RF cables (which can cause loss ofservice to 100% of subscribers) is not requiredfor the C4 CMTS can be upgraded without lossof service and at much lower cost.

ARRIS COMMITMENT TO STANDARDS AND THE C ABLE INDUSTRY

• The ARRIS Cadant C4 CMTS provides unsurpassed port density per unit of rack space and the best subscriber density per downstream

• The C4 CMTS provides unmatched performance in throughput and system stability through its extensive use of custom designed FPGA hardware. In Release 5.0, it has been scale tested to 52,000 data subscribers or 32,000 provisioned voice lines

• Up to 32 downstream channels may be bonded together via the C4 CMTS architecture for over 1Gigabit per second of bandwidth without degradation of throughput performance through the use of FPGA hardware on the CAMs

• The C4 CMTS will continue to provide availability greater than 99.999%. Other vendors, relying onexternal Edge QAM devices to perform channel bonding, can not

With the C4 CMTS, ARRIS will deliver DOCSIS 3.0 functionality in twodifferent architectures to fully meet all operators’ network models.

• The RCM, with its capability of subtending external devices via Gigabit Ethernet, allows the C4 CMTS to operatewith an external Edge QAM thus providing a pure disaggregated M-CMTS architecture

• M-CMTS with external downstream PHY devices (e.g. theARRIS Keystone D5 DMTS EdgeQAM) delivers full compliance with the original fully disaggregated NGNA vision.

• ARRIS will offer full DOCSIS 3.0 functionality in the Cadant C4 CMTSvia the Integrated I-CMTS model. The I-CMTS architecture providesindependent downstream and upstream scalability within a singlechassis, thus enjoying the high availability and density currentlyoffered by the C4 CMTS.

ARRIS is currently pursuing product development for DOCSIS 3.0. The technical advantages enabled by the advanced architecture of the C4 CMTS will provide unique benefits in the deployment of DOCSIS 3.0. In addition, ARRIS is heavily involved in both the M-CMTS and I-CMTS initiatives. Engineering efforts for M-CMTS and I-CMTS modules to be utilized within the C4 CMTS are well underway. Availability is to soon be announced and ARRIS will provide customers with additional schedule information for these projects as well as capacity engineering for the new architectural models.

ARRIS is fully committed to the worldwide cable industry. For decades, its products and solutions have been designed for, and in cooperationwith, cable MSOs. Additionally, ARRIS engineers have been embedded in CableLabs for years, helping define and write the many DOCSIS andPacketCable specifications. No other technology company in the world is so committed to cable.
