  • Note on Libertango

David Johnstone has made a close transcription to Piazzollas Libertango which is proving VERY popular around the world, and that transcription has

been recorded at least four times on You Tube see here:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRb3Mx0yYpE Longhorn Cello Quartet

UT Butler School of Music, U.S.A.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3kkt6ymE3w played by an Italian quartet formed by Vincenzo Lioy, Gianluca Montaruli, Luca Calzolaio, and

    Francesca Della Vista

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-q_OCV_qW4 Soncello Quartet

    (Galicia) & Carlos Garca Amigo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dIMKpvSGsM played by the Champaign Cello Choir, Champaign, Illinois, U.S.A.

This work may be played by four solo cellists, or by an orchestra of cellos. For

giving convincing performances and to highlight the virtuoso touch though, a

quartet performance is the more welcomed preference of David Johnstone. The

accents and rhythmic drive might be easier to achieve with four solo soloists.

But cello ensembles are very welcome to try this too, and the more the better for example, David Johnstone feels that four players to each part will definitely

sound more symphonic than just two where little intonation problems are likely to occur or creep in. However, the choice is yours!

But it should be brought to your attention that David has used the Piazzolla base

and constructed a far bigger work. He calls this new work Sonata - Fantasy Liberty on Libertango and it is for the same cello formation four demanding parts. In fact, this is sufficiently innovative (contains a new slow

movement to open) and extended (over 11 mins duration) as to be an original

work to see this work please click below English http://www.johnstone-music.com/portada/free-music-scores/5/343/sonata-fantasy-liberty-on-libertango-four-cellos
