THIS MONTH IN 1901I never knew what a Rachabite was, having only heard it in old sayings such as “How are you going, you old Rachabite”. It turns out it was a very successful health fund, whose only requirement was that members sign a pledge to abstain from drinking alcohol. Having gone through several name changes andownerssince1835,thefundstillexiststoday,andnow no longer requires the signing of the pledge.

“I Hope my story may help and inspire people who have retired and are suffering depression and anxiety.”

In 2013 after selling my interest in a leading entertainment agency I remember thinking how good it was to be able to do nothing, get up at any timeofthedayandjustwatchTV.

After only two weeks I was absolutely bored andfindingmyself inaverydepressedstateofmind.Istarted to play Bingo twice a week and it was here that I met a couple who lived in a local retirement facility.

Fatemusthaveplayedahandinusmeeting, becausethey knew of my history as former lead singer of THEBLUEECHOES.

They suggested I go to their facility and speak to lifestyle coordinator Shirley Van Kuelen becausethey engage people to do one hour performances during the day.

She said, well there are two things you should bedoing: rebirthing your singing career and also applyingforsomevolunteerjobswiththeWyndhamCity Council.

Soshebookedmetoentertainherpatronstwoweekslater and set me on the path to doing another one hundred and ninety similar facilities in the months following.

I also booked myself in to licensed poker machine venues which where also a huge success.

I also started three volunteer jobs; one is on aTuesday where I mentor some sixteen retired men, entertain and feed them from about 1.00pm till 6.00pm and on the Wednesday I drive a van and pick up people and take them to Bingo, shopping and medical appointments. And lastly on Thursdays IamattheinformationcentreattheWerribeeOpenRange Zoo.

Recently I decided to upgrade my singing career by secretly auditioning for national TV talent series, theXFACTOR,withouttellingmywifeandchildren.Itwas to be amajor turning point inmy life as Ireceived a standing ovation from the six hundred singerspresent.OneofmydaughtersrecordeditonherphoneanduploadedittoYouTube.AsaresultIhavebookingsalloverAustraliawithenquiresfromSpain,JapanLondonandNorway.

My advice to people who are considering retiring is to think about what you are going to do and seek advice from counselors. If you have a hidden talent forsomething, youmayfindasIhave, thatthis isyourtimetorevisitit, andbringjoytoyourselfandothers that have the opportunity to share it with you.

Two upcoming July gigs at Hotel 520 and the Tigers Club are sold out, but I invite you to take the opportunity to come and meet me at future events.

ERYNGIUM OVINIUM(Blue Devil)

There are approximately 230 species of Eryngium species in tropical and temperate parts of the world. However, there is only a handful of species endemic toAustralia.

If you are not already familiar with this species, let me introduce you to Eryngium ovinum, commonly called Blue Devil. It is a perennial herb that was once widespread on the grasslands of the basalt plains to the west of Melbourne.

During the 1970’s, my husband and I purchased a block of landnot far fromwhat is now theAltonaMeadows shopping complex.

Every year, we would admire Blue Devil plantsamongst the grasses and other native basalt plains plants. However, as the area was swallowed up by suburbia, our local council instructed land owners to reduce vegetation and, after a few years of regular mowing, thenativefloradisappearedandintroducedweed species moved in.

While I do understand why the Council requires a neat and tidy suburb and orders weed reduction and fire-threatremoval,Ideeplyregretthedemiseofournative grassland species.

Blue Devil plants emerge in late winter, developing a rosette of narrow, spiny, divided leaves. Bymid-summer, the plant will have produced several stiff floweringstemsandamassof crowdedbrightblueflowers surrounded by long, spiky, metallic bluebracts. This is a very spiky, prickly plant – hence “Blue Devil”.

Theterminalflowerheadsarethefirsttoopen, thentheflowerheadsonthesidebranchesopennextuntilallflowersareopen.Flowersarelonglasting, givingthe plant an impressive display of colour for several weeks before the plant dies down during autumn.

In the home garden, Eryngium ovinum could be employed as a rockery plant in a sunny, open, well drained position.

This is a relatively long lived species and easily grown from seed.
