performed, along with the Arnprior Community

Choir, at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in

Kinburn last Saturday night. Rouleau is one

of three young sing-ers at the event who

are all heading to the Renfrew Music Festival

in the next week. The youngsters are students

of choir director Lisa Webber. The choir will

be presenting Dancin’ to the Sixties at the Nick

Smith Centre on May 2.

Spring has sprung, and all eyes are on our local waterways.

In accordance with the operating regulations of the Ottawa River Regulating Planning Board and the Madawaska River Water Management Plan regu-lated by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Ontario Power Generation’s Ottawa/St. Lawrence Plant Group strongly advises users of the Madawas-ka and Ottawa Rivers to stay clear of its hydroelec-tric stations, dams and surrounding waterways.

Due to current high water levels, the probability of releasing large amounts of water at local dams over the next few weeks is now very high.Changing water flows and levels pose a serious threat to any-one who ventures too close.

Ontario Power Generation would like to remind all users of the river to take every precaution around its dams and generating stations across Ontario and to practice safety on Ontario’s waterways.

Hydroelectric stations operate all year round and their operation affects water flows and shoreline levels. Areas near dams are definitely not places for recreation. Water flows and levels can become dan-gerous very quickly and without notice, particularly during periods of significant rainfall.

Ontario Power Generation is an Ontario based company, whose principal business is the generation and sale of electricity in Ontario. Our focus is on the efficient production and sale of electricity from our competitive generation assets, while operating in a safe, open and environmentally responsible manner.

Bargain bikes help supportCommunity Policing

Last weekend the Arnprior Community Policing program conducted a bike auction at the Arnprior Shopping Centre. The 21 bikes on the block brought in $760, which will be used by community policing to carry out their awareness programs throughout the year. At the left, auctioneer Bernie Lynn, a member of community policing, looks for the high bid while in front Bob Smith examines his excellent two-wheel catch. Community Policing will be hold-ing their big fundraising event, Jail and Bail, at the Arnprior Shopping Mall on May 10.

Buckle up! Seatbelts save lives

All 165 Ontario Provincial Police detachments in the province, including Arnprior, are participating in the annual spring seatbelt safety campaign, Commissioner Julian Fantino announced recently.

The campaign, which is underway, runs through Sunday, April 27. Last year, 117 people were killed on roads patrolled by the OPP as a result of not being buck-led up, a 14.7 per cent increase over 2006.

So far in 2008, 22 people not wearing seatbelts have died on OPP-patrolled roads. At the same time last year, 29 had been killed as a result of not wearing a seatbelt.

“It takes less than five seconds to fasten your seatbelt,” Fantino said. “That five seconds could be the difference between living and dying if you are involved in a serious collision. There is no excuse for not buckling up.”

The OPP will also be looking for improperly installed child restraints or young children who aren’t in car seats at all.

A properly used child seat reduces a child’s risk of injury in a motor vehicle collision by as much as 75 per cent, yet as many as 80 per cent of child car seats are used incorrectly.

Bill 73, passed in December 2004, made booster seats mandatory for anyone transporting a child weighing between 40-80 pounds (18-36 kilograms), under 4-foot-9 (145 centimetres) tall and under the age of eight.

“A person has a much better chance of surviving a serious collision if they are wearing a seatbelt,” Fanti-no said. “You owe it to yourself, your family and friends to buckle up.”

On Friday, March 7, at approximately 11:30 p.m. the McNab Braeside Fire Department was dis-patched to a house fire on Milton Stewart Drive in McNab Braeside Town-ship.

When crews arrived they were met by the owner and his family in the driveway. They had safely exited the home after they were alerted to the presence of smoke by their working smoke alarms.

The fire had originated in the basement beside the wood furnace. After hearing the smoke alarm, the owner managed to get his family to safety then went to the basement to see where the smoke was coming from.

The owner had a work-ing fire extinguisher in the basement that he used to extinguish the flames.

“This is a good save,” said fire Chief Robert Dodge, “if the owner had not been prepared, we can imagine what might have happened. Having work-ing smoke alarms on each level of the home and out-side sleeping areas is law. Having an escape plan is just as important. This just proves that preparing for the worst can save your life, and your property.”

The home was damaged but is able to be repaired.

Although it is not man-datory to have a fire extin-guisher in your home, the fire department does recommend you invest in one and learn how to use it properly. If you use a woodstove in your home it is highly recommended

that you have a properly rated fire extinguisher near by and keep the area surrounding the stove free of combustible materials.

Ontario’s Fire Marshal, Pat Burke, said he is wor-ried about the number of people who have died in fires across the province this year.

“People tend to take things for granted, and ‘It’s not going to happen to me’ seems to be the atti-tude, so what we’re trying to do is to change that and

get people to think about it, said Burke.

There have been 39 fire deaths in Ontario so far this year, one of which was in McNab Braeside Township.

Last month a devastat-ing blaze in west Hamil-ton claimed the lives of a mother and her three young daughters.

The Ontario Fire Mar-shal’s Office urges every-one to have smoke alarms properly installed inside their homes and ensure they are in proper work-ing order.

The largest percentage of fire deaths in the home occur at night while peo-ple are asleep.

Therefore, a working smoke alarm can provide an early warning that can make the difference between life and death.

Test your smoke alarms monthly to make sure that they are working properly by using the test button on the unit.

Battery operated units should have the battery changed at least twice a year. The Fire Department recommends that you change the battery when you change your clocks for daylight savings.

For more information on fire safety and how you can protect your home, con-tact the McNab Braeside Fire Department, Fire Pre-vention Officer at 613-623-5756.

Good things do come in small packages

If you love big model airplanes, then this is for you.

The International Miniature Aircraft Association will be holding its annual Rally of Giants for the first time in Cana-da and they are coming to Arnprior.

A popular event in the United States for the past 30 years, the Rally of Giants normally attracts several hundred enthu-siasts and thousands of spectators.

The runways and taxiways of the Arnprior Airport will truly become an international hub as a couple of hun-dred “miniature” aircraft of all sizes and descriptions take to the skies over town for four days beginning June 26.

These planes are the finest examples of working model aircraft in North

America as more than 200 pilots nor-mally attend the meet.

The planes are among the largest “miniature” aircraft types, often measur-ing several feet across the wingspan.

For those interested in the hobby some of latest innovations and products will also be available as the top names in the miniature aircraft hobby market will have their displays at the Arnprior Airport during the show.

The event is being sponsored by the local Ottawa Valley Chapter 217 and the Arnprior Radio Control Club with the assistance of the airport commission, the town, and the Lions Club.

This will be a great event for the whole family to attend. Parking and admission will be available for spectators, all for $5.

Modern day conveniencesNot too long ago I

joined the cell phone set. My world has changed — it has really opened up to me.

The convenience — I can order pizza from any-where. Even my car. Of course I would never, ever, ever do that. Because I read in the newspaper only people of low morals and bad character would ever use their cell phone in the car while driving.

But I can, and do, order pizza in the elevator, at the mall, from my backyard, over at the park, from my bathroom and a whole lot of other exotic locales.

Before cell phones, or as I now refer to it BC, my phone still had a cord. It was married to my wall — they were inseparable.

I couldn’t even watch television while talking to my mother. It was torture.

My phone was a glori-fied answering machine. It was a collector of news of the past. I used to come home after a day of doing my thing, check my answering machine and listen to all the bet-ter things I missed doing because no one could get a hold of me.

I’ve learned the cell phone etiquette. I always thought if you had a cell phone you had no reason to not answer it. It’s right there on your hip wher-ever you are.

Now I know better. You don’t need a reason to not answer your cell phone. It’s up to you. Course, if anyone ever called me I would move heaven and earth to answer that dang phone if I could find it but whatever.

Some day I hope to be popular enough to say whatever in a different way. You know, like it’s Dalton McGuinty call-ing me again looking for advice on the province’s economy, but, whatever, I say, I’m in the middle of

an X-Box session here. You don’t even have to

give a reason when you phone someone back, sev-eral days later. Yeah, so and so, I’m just getting back to you.

Also, there’s a world of excuses to use if you don’t have the backbone to not give an excuse. I didn’t get reception where I was, my phone was charging, that was weird, I don’t know why I didn’t get that call — must be the phone’s fault. But I’m thinking of grow-ing a pair and just giv-ing everyone the standard excuse — at the time you called I did not care what you had to say. Bam.

Course, in retrospect, that one might come back to bite me in the butt.

You good readers at home, at this point in the column, are probably starting to wonder if this is some sort of repeat. Did this kid write this in the ‘90s? Or is he just still liv-ing in the ‘90s?

Nope, this is fresh copy. I just put off the cell phone as long as I could. I was one of those old timers. Cell phone. Cell phone? What do I need a cell phone for? I’ve got a per-fectly good wall mounted unit in my kitchen. And I have plenty of cells in my body already. This cell phone sounds like a bunch of hocus pocus. In my day, rotary dial was good enough for me.

But here I am, with a

pretty blue cell phone in my pocket.

But it also makes me worry a wee bit. What other wondrous modern day conveniences have I been missing out on? Well I’ve already got my com-puter device whirring to write this note, I might as well surf the Internet while I’m at it.

Virtual libraries. They’re like libraries, but they don’t exist. Or bet-ter yet, they’re computer libraries (okay, writing a modern technology col-umn with having extreme-ly limited knowledge of modern technologies is proving more difficult than I first envisioned).

Online libraries are boasting more copies, or e-books, than real world libraries. As time goes on, more and more vir-tual libraries will become available in these small files that allow an entire library, 30,000 books of a million characters each, to be worn on keychains, necklaces, bracelets, etc. Me I like the name. Vir-tual libraries. Reminds me of high school. Every time I was supposed to go to the library I virtually made it.

It’s a good time to be profiling inventions. Why you ask? Because a cou-ple of weeks ago the 36th International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva happened. Does that mean we’ve only been invent-ing things for the last 36 years?

German Heina Gruber has invented the hot-air grill, which puts a ver-tical spin on the conven-tional barbecue, suppos-edly allowing for healthi-er cooking. Sounds inge-nious, but I think I invent-ed a similar device a few years ago. When I want to hot-air grill my food I just bring something to eat with me when I inter-view politicians. Not nam-

ing names, because I like these people, except you Dalton, I would just put my cold soon-to-be-grilled cheese sandwich on the end of my tape recorder microphone and ask the politician to speak “open-ly and honestly.” Careful though, keep a close eye on said sandwich or you might burn the heck out of it — the device comes with no off switch.

The trespolo is a handy little device that turns from a laptop computer case into a laptop work station you can take any-where. I think the inven-tor was my boss.

There’s a new way to make noise. Really loud noise. Roberto Riber Arza-bala of Spain has invented a battery free, logically-named air horn, which can produce 108 decibels of sound. It looks like a horn and can blow your darn ears off.

I bet the booth beside Arzabala’s did brisk busi-ness. The leblatphone is a device for people who can’t talk (perhaps they recently lost their hearing or just can’t be heard over the air horn). It works a bit like Stephen Hawking’s speech-aid Words Plus, but in handheld form.

Here’s a new art form that seems to have taken off since the invention of the digital camera (digital camera? In my day stone tablets were good enough for me). Taking photos of one’s self. Go visit Face-book and prove my point.

How many people do you see on that website who have taken their own photo and posted it. Lots, that’s how many. Anyway, the Quickpod is a handy-dandy extending device you can attach your cam-era to and face it towards yourself and take your own photo. Not everyone has the cache I do and can afford their own photo-graphic life chronicler.

A real reason to celebrate

Spring has definitely sprung in Arnprior, McNab-Braeside and area, and in a big way.

Daffodil campaigns, bike auctions, flood talk and hockey playoffs — all signal the season and have us itching to get out and do something.

Spring is a great time to take stock, and as the winter washes away, it is clear there is certainly some work to do.

Not only is it time to pick up the litter (attention potential pitch-in participants: word has it the area behind the Arnprior Shopping Centre needs you!) and clean up the yard, but we have to look at the bigger picture, too.

It is increasingly important we look after our environment, and the community seems to be get-ting the message.

This Saturday, April 19, the Arnprior Environ-mental Action Committee hosts the 2nd Annual Earth Day Celebration in downtown Arnprior. How great is it that more than 26 groups, businesses and organizations have signed on to participate?

The event promises to be not only an opportu-nity to learn more about protecting the Earth, but a chance to enjoy some great food, take in some local entertainment, and see what is being done, right here in our own community, to save the environ-ment.

Waste management is an important and promi-nent issue. A number of Ottawa Valley municipali-ties, including Arnprior and McNab-Braeside, are working towards the possible purchase of Renfrew’s Beauman recycling plant. Officials, faced with bulg-ing landfill sites and tougher regulations, are wise to keep a careful eye on the system.

Waste Management Inc. recently broke ground on a new landfill gas to energy facility in Ottawa.

Efforts to increase awareness seem to be work-ing. An entire event based on the environmental message is a boon for Arnprior.

Make sure to head down to John Street this Sat-urday for the Earth Day celebration. After all, our planet is worth it.

Each week in conjunction with the Arnprior and District Humane Society we feature a pet ready for adoption.

Molly (shelter number 2302)D/S/H Female, spayed, 3-years-old.Molly has been at the shelter for almost

two years, she came in June '06, she des-perately needs a home. She is friendly and affectionate, she loves to be petted but doesn't like to be picked up. She is very social with other cats, and should be in a home with at least one other cat.

Molly loves to sleep on her pillow in the window. A quiet home without small children would be best suited for Molly.

Hailey (shelter number 2957)D/S/H Female, spayed 5-years-old.Hailey was found on Allan Drive, in

January and never claimed. She is a quiet, gentle cat. Hailey is

very affectionate and friendly — she loves attention, likes to be groomed and petted.Hailey tolerates other cats but prefers her own space. She would make a great com-panion for someone that wanted a lap cat.

You can call the Arnprior and District Humane Society at 623-0916 between noon and 5 p.m.

The shelter is in need of soft adult dog and puppy food, dry small breed adult dog food and dry and soft kitten food.

New shelter hours are from Monday to Saturday 12 to 5 p.m.

Please find me a homeMaking use of British history lists

British passenger listsReader Stan Horrall

contacted me recently with news about a new passenger list on www.findmypast.com . The site claims that it lists all pas-sengers leaving Britain on passenger liners 1890-1960. It includes more than 24 million names.

You can start a search by selecting ‘passenger lists’ from their home page. The search box has an excellent feature that allows you to specify a sec-ond person that traveled with your prime one. This is a great way to reduce the number of hits for someone with a common name.

The search results include the first and last name, year of birth, sex, departure year and port and destination country and port. If you want more information (transcript or image) you have to pay for it.

Another alternative is to take the information you are given and go to www.collectionscanada.ca , ‘Canadian Geneal-ogy Centre’, ‘Ancestors Search’, ‘Passenger Data-base.’ Here you can find specific dates, name of ship and lists of other pas-sengers who might be con-nected to yours.

Isn’t it wonderful how new resources keep pop-ping up.

MY HEROESMany of the resourc-

es we use in family his-tory research only exist because people freely gave of their time, energy and expertise either on their own or as volunteers in a society. These people col-lect, research, catalogue,

organize, preserve, index and make available the resources we crave. They are my heroes and I will try to highlight the work of some of them from time to time in this column. If you think someone spe-cific should be included, please drop me a line.

Irene Robillard of Burnstown is a very active volunteer at the Arnpri-or and McNab-Braeside Archives in Arnprior and also serves on its board. When not working on archive projects she is busy researching, docu-menting and writing the history of life on the Cala-bogie Road.

Her first book, Burn-stown United Church 1849-1999 was published in 1999 to celebrate the 150th anni-versary of the church. It is rich with genealogy information of the fami-lies that attended and is loaded with baptism and marriage information.

Then she moved up the road to Springtown. All that is left for one to see today is a sign, a church and some tombstones but her book, Springtown reflections, a Study of Peo-ple and Time, which was published in 2007 provides

a surprising and interest-ing history of the rise and fall of this village between Burnstown and Calabogie. She chronicles the impact of the lumbering industry, railway and hydroelectric development.

For family historians she has a chart of the census data from 1851 through 1911 and other genealogical data that she was able to find includ-ing transcriptions of the three cemeteries. There are over 1500 names from about 100 families of this little village.

Irene has now moved her focus farther up the road to Calabogie. This is perhaps the best known of the towns in the area because of its recent reincarnation as a tour-ist/resort area. Histori-cally it shared the ups and downs of other towns in the area as it struggled to survive the vicissitudes of the square lumber trade, the railway, mining and hydroelectric dams.

She is now up to her ears in early census, land records, maps and photos in area repositories and is eager to hear from anyone who has photos, postcards, memories or anecdotes of Calabogie. You can reach her at [email protected]

Her books are pub-lished through General Store Publishing House and are available through area bookstores and the archives in Arnprior.

Thank you Irene and keep up the great work.

I welcome suggestions, comments, and queries at: [email protected]. Please mention this news-paper in your subject line.

Colin Borshevsky loses his hair for Dare to CareThat buzzing sound

is not the arrival of bees looking for spring blos-soms.

It’s Colin Borshevsky taking it off, his hair that is, for the Dare to Care Telethon.

Borshevsky lost his locks, to the delight of his sponsors, raising $379 for the Dare to Care Telethon.

We all congratulate and thank Colin for his ini-tiative, his sponsors and Lorraine L’Abbé for her services.

The 2nd Annual Dare to Care Telethon will be held on Sunday, May 25, 2008 at St John Chrysostom Hall in Arnprior.

This year we are rais-ing funds for the Care Coach service, our para transit vehicle, as well as the many programs run by the Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors At Home Support Inc.

This group, of dedi-cated volunteers and staff, provides services not only to seniors, but also to disabled individuals of all ages in the Township of McNab-Braeside and Town of Arnprior.

If you are going to be out of town during the telethon, you can pre-pledge at our offices, A1-106 McGonigal St W, Arn-prior or call 613-623-7981.

Volunteers are needed to tend the Dare to Care Telethon promotion table at the Telus Cup Hockey

Tournament, April 21 to 27, at the Nick Smith Cen-tre.

It would be for one hour prior to each game.

Please call 623-7981 if you would like to sign up. Speaking of volunteers, we are looking for Irene Deeks and Peggy Smith, who at the 1st Annual worked directly with COGECO producing the pledge graphics. Irene and Peggy, please give us a call.

If you or your organi-zation would like to avail yourself of the sponsor-ship opportunities or donate a prize for the 2nd Annual Dare to Care Tele-thon please give us a call.

Would you like to win a $350 gift certificate for Kevin Dodds Art Gallery?

Be on the lookout in the Arnprior Weekender in early May for your Dare to Care Telethon flyer.

Complete the coupon portion to be submitted at our office and keep your flyer with its correspond-ing lucky number.

To claim the prize, your flyer with the lucky num-ber must be presented.

Put it on your fridge or household bulletin board so you don’t loose it.

Draw will take place during final hour of the telethon.

For further informa-tion on any or all of these opportunities, call Sherry Steeves, Event Coordina-tor, Dare to Care Telethon office at 613-623-7981

In praise of respect in our schoolsYears ago I gave up

speaking to school classes under Grade 4 and over Grade 6.

Under Grade 4, the children have no idea what I am talking about, and over grade six, they are a heck of a lot smarter than I am.

That isn’t the full rea-son I gave up on speaking to students over grade six, of course. The real reason was that the last time I spoke at a high school I was hit with a flying text book and a spit ball of giant proportions.

The class was so unruly that I packed up and left minutes after I arrived. Now I pick and choose very carefully the schools and classes I will speak to.

And so when I had a call a few weeks ago to speak to a school close to home I declined, and gave my rea-sons. I said my time was too valuable to waste in an unruly classroom, where the teacher’s control was taken away from her, and any form of discipline by her was not only frowned on, but could cause her to lose her job.

The young teacher was not only astounded at my comments, but assured me I would have no problems going to his school. He was a good persuader, and I agreed finally to give it one more try.

The school was the Cal-vary Christian Academy just outside of the village of Franktown.

At the outset let me say, I am writing this piece without the permission or the knowledge of the school.

It was the Historica Fair and the young stu-dent who was assigned to be my guide, met me with a huge smile and a hug.

I immediately saw that this was a school with a difference. First of all, the entire enrollment was in uniform — green tar-tan with sparkling white blouses.

Everyone knows how I feel about school uniforms. No one can tell me it isn’t cheaper for the parents to buy one or two school uniforms than it is to buy the latest style jeans, and bare-midriff designer T-shirts!

With uniforms there is absolutely no competition for the students to outdo one another on the fash-ion front! At the academy it was impossible to tell if someone’s parent was a high tech tycoon, or a night guard at a factory.

I asked my guide about her uniform, and she told me she liked it, because everyone was the same.

After many years in my business, you learn to observe your surround-ings with a critical eye. This school had an atmo-sphere of respect about it. Imagine, little children in the younger grades, when being introduced to me, shook hands! When I was taken around to be shown the displays that had been set up for the fair, there was genuine enthusiasm, and when the male teach-er who had called to ask me to speak came on the scene, he was dressed in a suit, with a shirt and tie.

He looked like a person of authority!

When the classes were called to order, we all sang Oh Canada in loud voic-es, immediately followed by The Lord’s Prayer...no recording coming from the office...everyone standing at attention, and repeating what used to be manda-tory in every school in the province.

The real test was about to begin. I was called on to speak. A half hour later, I still had the rapt atten-tion of every student in the auditorium.

During the last couple decades I have relented and gone to other Chris-tian schools in the area. The same atmosphere of respect and discipline was very apparent.

And yes, the students all proudly wore uniforms

at these schools. And inci-dentally, after 11 years, there hasn’t been one case of vandalism at Calvary Christian Academy.

So what makes Chris-tian schools different? Is it because in order to enroll your child you are made aware of the rules and protocol before your child is accepted? I hon-estly don’t know.

I am quite sure there are many, many non-Christian schools in our area where there is enthusiasm like I saw in Franktown, and an air of respect amongst the students and the teaching staff.

And I know for a fact there are hundreds and hundreds of teachers in those schools doing their very best, within the limi-tations set down for them, to keep order and make sure every student not only gets a good educa-tion, but is taught respect.

At the risk of repeating what I have already said in a previous article, being a teacher today, at any level is a challenge.

And I have also said I wouldn’t go into the profession if I was paid $10,000 a week, and given free housing in the gymna-sium. I have also said, and I will say it again, there are thousands and thou-sands of young children and teenagers throughout our area who are respect-ful, are at school to learn, and a joy to any teacher.

Grab your partner, and stretch for diabetes

Yoga teacher Hilda Siegel, an educational assistant at St. Michael’s school in Fitzroy, is leading a couples yoga workshop this Saturday, April 19 at Ultimate Fitness in Arnprior. Cost for the workshop is a minimum donation of $20 to Siegel’s Team Diabetes fundraising efforts. Siegel also recently published a children’s book called Yoga for little Yogis. If a book is purchased from the website, Siegel will donate $2 from each book to Team Diabetes. Couples yoga helps individuals increase flexibility, and stretching with a partner helps you go deeper into your stretches and feels great, says Siegel. “It’s a good way to connect with another person,” says Siegel, who notes that it does not have to be a spouse, but can be a friend or family member also. At left, Siegel demonstrates the assisted cobra pose with Ultimate Fitness owner Paul Vaillancourt.

The 9th annual Val-ley Fishing and Outdoors Show in Carp last week-end was another huge suc-cess for organizers and plans are underway for a bigger and better offering as it hits the milestone of a decade in 2009.

The three-day 2008 edi-tion of the show had more than 80 exhibitors and the milder weather encour-aged visitors to get out and get ready for the warming weather.

Organizer Dave Arbour feels it was one of the big presentations for the show so far.

“It is probably one of the best shows we have every had,” said Arbour. “Attendance is up prob-ably 20 or 30 per cent. The weather probably had something to do with it but people are used to this show and they are coming on a regular basis.”

The Carleton Place co-ordinator is already get-ting exhibitors lined up for next year and potential new exhibitors, who visit-ed the show over the three days, are signing up.

“That means a larger and even better show next year,” said Arbour.

Arbour operated the Fishing Show for ten years and the Outdoors Show for 14 years and he feels not only has he adapted with the times but the exhibi-tors have grown with new product and professional staff.

The show continues to add new dimensions to the presentation with food vendors and education and awareness.

“Education is impor-tant as well,” he said. “We have seminars on a regu-lar basis, ongoing and con-tinually. So what happens is, you leave here not only with good product but how to use it and how to be suc-cessful with it.”

The kids have become a growing dimension as their parents view the exhibits and products.

“The kids all get prizes thanks to our sponsors,” said Arbour. “The kids will get tackle, they get rods, and they get reels, so they are having a great time. Of course we have the fishing pond down there to catch your own supper.”

The large number of exhibitors comes from across the Ottawa Valley and the city including the Arnprior and District Fish

and Game Club, Al’s Cor-ner Store, the West Car-leton Sportsmen Associa-tion, Ontario Association of Anglers and Hunters and the Ottawa Valley All-Terrain Vehicle Club.

While the kids try their hand at fishing, archery or in the video shooting gallery, their parents are looking at the boats, fish-ing tackle, crossbows or guns. There is even fash-ion-ware for the hunter and fishing clothing for all seasons.

SOMETHING FOR ALLFrom knife-sharpen-

ing to conservation efforts there is something for everyone.

“We’re not concentrat-ing on one issues,” said Arbour. “What we are try-ing to do is give a real diversification to the show. There’s something for everybody. We will have the tackle, we will have the guns, the hunting stuff but we will also have the clothing and other stuff – the ATVs, the boats and the outfitters.”

The show has grown so much Arbour is working on how to make it bigger and better and provide more space for exhibitors which allows more prod-uct and a more comfort-able environment for visi-

tors.“We’re limited by space

obviously but we are going to look at bigger and better for next year,” he said. “The plans are being worked as we speak.”

Arbour is not necessar-ily looking for a change of venue just the ability to grow.

He has high praise for the staff at the W. Erskine Johnston arena and the local residents and spon-sors of the show.

“People are versed with the weather here, the fairgrounds are working for us, we’ve done a shut-tle now so we are doing improvements as we go and we are learning as we go,” said the owner.

He feels Carp is a hub and all of the spokes go out across Eastern Ontar-io and into Quebec.

One of the grow-ing sectors for the show is the attraction of city residents to nature and Arbour feels exhibitors such as the outfitters fits right in. He expects to see even more of the partner-ship with nature as the show expands into new sectors while maintaining the core patrons in fish-ing, hunting and the out-doors.

While the show is a lot of work Arbour enjoys the

challenge.“It’s a challenge, make

no mistake it is a lot of work. The staff I have here is excellent. They stand beside me and they are a part of this show. I couldn’t do it without them, and the exhibitors and the people who attend the show,” he said proudly.

“Why do I do it? I watch the kids’ smiles when they catch the fish. That is our future. I see young people coming to this show. I see a lot of women coming to the show. I do it because I get pleasure out of it.”

Kathy Hunt’s energy, sense of community, and love of life and people reached out to touch not just those in West Car-leton, but many, many others, past president of the Arnprior Regional Federation of Agricul-ture, Eve Yantha, told a group gathered to honour Kathy’s memory at the Galetta Community Cen-tre last Monday evening.

“Never one to seek rec-ognition she was, none the less, a real force to be reckoned with,” said Yantha, citing the vari-ous organizations with whom she was associ-ated, and for whom she worked tirelessly, as well as the community events “Kathy not only dreamed up but carried through!”

Yantha remembered the Health and Safety Day masterminded by Hunt back at the Galetta Sales barn in 1996, and the Health and Wellness Day she organized at the Kinburn Community Centre in the last days of the disease that was ulti-mately to take her life.

“Nobody who saw her that day suspected that anything was wrong,” said Yantha.

Yantha paid tribute to

“Kathy’s extraordinary efforts on behalf of the Arnprior Regional Feder-ation of Agriculture. She was always on the social committee and every year found a different way to decorate the hall for our annual meeting.

“She will be missed by her church community of Saint George’s Fitzroy, by her friends at her much loved Lorne Sutherland branch of the Women’s Institute, and by the resi-dents of the West Car-leton seniors’ residence where she was the admin-istrator for many years.

“We were in awe of her energy, her positive attitude, her ability to always manage to do all the things she did with such endless joy. When asked how she managed, she said that she never did it alone.

“I always knew Kathy,

who had great faith, meant God was with her,” concluded Yantha with a choke in her voice.

Yantha and ARFA President Rick Cum-mings presented husband Jim Hunt with a plaque later to be affixed to a mural which now graces the end of the commu-nity centre and which was once the backdrop of one of Hunt’s two famous productions which drew standing-room-only audi-ences at the Fitzroy Har-bour Community Centre.

The plaque reads: “In Memory of Kathy Hunt, a Loyal, Dedicated Director, Treasurer and Secretary to the Arnprior Federa-tion of Agriculture”.

Although, as Yantha commented later, “that doesn’t even scratch the surface of all the things Kathy was and did.”

Waste Management breaks ground on gas to energy facility

Waste Management Inc. broke ground on its new landfill gas to energy (LFGTE) facility in Ottawa Monday (April 14), which will produce up to 6.4 megawatts of ener-gy — enough to power more than 6,400 homes in the National Capital Region. It is expected the facility will deliver electricity to Hydro One transmission lines in the fall of 2008.

“Our facility will benefit the local envi-ronment and economy because it will help offset the need for non-renewable resources such as coal, natural gas and oil,” said Ross Wallace, Site Manager for Ottawa Waste Management Facility. “Waste Management is proud to be building this facility and combined with our existing waste manage-ment operations, demonstrates our compa-ny’s dedication to fulfilling the needs of the community.”

“As Member of Parliament for Ottawa West-Nepean and Minister of the Environ-ment, today’s announcement is good news for our community,” said John Baird. “Our government recognizes the important effort of companies like Waste Management to help take action in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to provide clean energy to Ottawa residents.”

The Ottawa facility will be the compa-ny’s second landfill gas-to-energy facility in Canada after the one in Ste. Sophie, Quebec, which delivers gas to the nearby Cascades paper mill. Waste Management also has plans to develop a similar energy project at its soon to be expanded Warwick landfill near Watford, Ontario as well as investigat-ing the possibility of building another proj-ect at its landfill in Petrolia, Ontario.

“This is a great win for the climate and a win for clean energy,” said Phil McNeely, Member of Provincial Parliament for Otta-wa-Orleans and parliamentary assistant to the minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal. “As an Ottawa member, I’m espe-cially pleased that Waste Management will be reducing greenhouse gases by providing a clean, renewable energy source for the city.”

The Ottawa LFGTE plant is part of Waste Management’s corporate initiative to build 60 new renewable energy facilities by 2012. In 2008, Waste Management plans to bring 10 LFGTE facilities on line and begin development of an additional 10 new sites.

These will be in addition to the over 100 that are in operation at its landfill sites and third party sites across North America. It is also a key component of the company’s environ-mental sustainability initiative to increase its waste-based energy production. Waste Management creates enough energy for the equivalent of 1 million homes each year. By 2020, it expects to double that output, pro-ducing enough energy for the equivalent of more than 2 million homes.

“I am very pleased that Waste Manage-ment is bringing this proven technology and providing clean renewable energy for the city,” said Ottawa Councillor Eli El-Chantiry. “It has been a personal goal of mine to see a substantial portion of Otta-wa’s energy generated from the city’s solid waste.”

A pioneer in LFGTE projects, Waste Management designed and operated its first facility in the United States over 20 years ago. With 277 landfills, Waste Management is North America’s largest landfill operator and is in a unique position to expand waste-based renewable power generation across the country. The company is also exploring partnerships to expand its landfill gas-to-energy technology to other private and municipal landfills.

“This initiative is a major step in Waste Management’s ongoing efforts to imple-ment sustainable business practices across the company,” said Wallace.

“Landfill gas-to-energy projects provide an important contribution to our regional, provincial and national renewable energy portfolio.”

Landfill gas, produced when microor-ganisms break down organic material in the landfill, is comprised of approximately 50-60 percent methane and 40-50 percent carbon dioxide.

At most landfills in the United States, these greenhouse gases are simply burned off, or “flared.” However, Waste Manage-ment sites with LFGTE facilities collect the methane and use it to fuel onsite engines or turbines, generating electricity to power surrounding homes and neighborhoods while creating a new revenue stream for the landfills. By building LFGTE facilities, Waste Management reduces greenhouse gases by offsetting the use of fossil fuel at the utility power plants.

BATHROOM RENOVATIONS

Continued from Page 12I know countless young people who work tirelessly

for charities, take school seriously and respect other people’s property.

They are thriving in spite of the system. Others fail because of it.Why is that every Christian school I have gone to

shows such deep respect for their teachers, visitors, other people’s property and for each other?

Why is it alright to hug and show affection in a Christian school, and it is discouraged in the public system?

Why is it that parents are so against school uni-forms?

Individually, these questions are probably of no con-sequence, but put them all together and they pretty well describe the difference between a Christian school and our public system.

Schools thriving despite system

SCHOOL BOARD SEEKS INPUT ON COMMON VIRTUES

“Character Development is the deliberate effort to nurture the universal attributes upon which communities agree.”

(Finding Common Ground, Glaze, 2006)Over the past two years, there has been a major and delib-erate focus on character development in Renfrew County District School Board schools. At this point, the Board is interested in hearing from community groups as it prepares a list of common virtues. The Board wants to partner with our communities in an effort to encourage character development in our youth. Good character is essential to success in schools and in communities! The RCDSB Character Development Committee wants feed-back from you or your organization on the following draft common virtue list: RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, EMPATHY, INITIATIVE, INTEGRITY, OPTIMISM and COURAGE. Are there traits you see on this list that do not represent the feel-ings of Renfrew County residents? Are there traits or synonyms of traits that should be used instead? We want a list of common virtues that reflect the priorities of our communities. Send written feedback to your local school principal or to Mr. Dennis Jenkins, Assistant Superintendent, Renfrew County District School Board, 1270 Pembroke Street West, Pembroke, Ontario, K8A 4G4. Written responses will be accept-ed up until April 30, 2008. Also, feel free to contact Mr. Jenkins at 613-735-0151 ext. 3320 to arrange to have a member of the Character Development Committee visit with your organization.

Lee Cavanagh honoured as West Carleton’s Citizen of the Year

Lee Cavanagh was the People’s Choice for West Carleton’s Citizen of the Year for his work in the com-munity and his leadership as president of the 2007 Carp Fair. The awards are sponsored by the Kanata Chamber of Commerce Awards. Last Thursday night the Carp Agricultural Society honoured their past president, a man who has triumphed over an attack on his health while continuing to meet the over-whelming demands of his community commitments. At the left, West Carleton-March Councillor Eli El-Chantiry pays tribute to Cavanagh while Cavanagh and the 2008 Carp Fair presidents Heather Deugo and Gord McCord look on. In front is the awards Cavanagh received as the People’s Choice.

On Saturday, May 10, Canadians can help cook up a cure!

Visit any of the more than 465 M&M Meat Shops locations across Canada to support the 20th Annual M&M Meat Shops Charity BBQ Day benefiting Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Cana-da (CCFC) medical research.

M&M Meat Shops’ franchisees, staff and thousands of volunteers from coast-to-coast will be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs to meet the 20th Anniversary Charity BBQ Day fundraising goal of $2 million. On May 10th, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., supporters will receive a hamburger or hot dog, a drink and a bag of chips for a minimum donation of $2.50. All product and time is donated, so every penny raised goes directly to CCFC

for its research programs.

BREAKING RECORDS FOR A CUREFrom humble beginnings, the M&M

Meat Shops Charity BBQ Day has grown into CCFC’s largest annual fundraising activity by any single supporter. Over the past 20 years, M&M Meat Shops has raised more than $14.5 million for medi-cal research dedicated to finding a cure for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, two similar yet distinct conditions also known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Canada has the highest incidence of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis in the world, yet the public profile of these “taboo” diseases continues to be low. There are nearly 200,000 Canadi-

ans suffering from IBD. It is a painful and unpredictable disorder, there is no known cause or cure and the number of cases continues to grow. The funds raised through events such as Charity BBQ Day have allowed CCFC to fund nearly $50 million in medical research projects and have helped it become one of the world’s leading sources of non-governmental, per capita funding of IBD research.

Charity BBQ Day began in 1988, when Mac Voisin, Founder of M&M Meat Shops learned that Canadians suffer from IBD at an unusually high rate. He quickly real-ized that he had the unique opportunity to help raise awareness and funds for a little known, and even less spoken about condition and Canadian charity. Charity BBQ Day was born and the CCFC gained

both a corporate sponsor and a public voice. Over the past 20 years, Charity BBQ Day has grown rapidly. Last year, $1.91 million was raised and this year the goal is set at $2 million.

“What began in 1988 with just a hand-ful of stores has evolved into a national event at more than 465 M&M Meat Shops locations across Canada. We are celebrat-ing 20 years of fundraising for the CCFC and Charity BBQ Day has become an expression of who we are as a company. The commitment of our franchisees and volunteers in communities from coast-to-coast is phenomenal and we thank everyone for their dedication,” says Mac Voisin. “Our goal is to help find a cure so that our event can become an annual celebration of the cure for IBD.”

Taking the ‘down’ out of downsizingThere comes a time

when, for any number of reasons any number of people have to face the fact that the only practical solu-tion is to downsize.

Moving from a family home into something more modest is a huge undertak-ing both physically and emotionally.

“It’s not just a business

of moving the number of things a family may have accumulated over the years,” says Judy Robinson who, with husband Doug, started Senior Moves, a company specializing in helping with every aspect of what can be a traumatic transition.

“It’s how to help deal with the unseen things. The memories of family birthday parties, or Christ-mases; the attachment of a

particular view from a cer-tain window; the comfort of the familiar possessions around one, or familiar activities like waiting for the first humming bird, or waiting for the first rose of summer to bloom.

“All those intangibles are woven into the fabric of a home and they wrap them-selves around the hearts of family members.”

It’s that understand-ing and ability to support, counsel and help that have made Judy and Doug Robin-son one of the most sought after companies not only to help with the practical side of downsizing, but to assist in the often thorny area of estate management.

And it all came about “almost by happenstance,” as Doug puts it.

For many years the Robinsons led what Doug refers to as a “normal life”. A dedicated, active teacher for nearly 35 years with wife Judy (who shared his love of kids) “coming in to co-teach after our own three kids were grown,” Doug admitted that retire-ment left him looking for something to do.

The Robinsons became Ottawa representatives for World Books, a company specializing in supplying teaching materials and kids’ books. Then, one day, they got a call from a friend of theirs who managed the local office for Royal Lep-age. He was desperate and looking for a “small favour.

“He knew that we had a utility trailer and wondered if we could help move a 90-year-old gentleman from his home into a retirement residence. He was desper-ate and he warned us that the senior had lived in his home for 40 years during which time he had accumu-lated numerous possessions that our friend described as being ‘a mess of maudlin mediocrity.’

“We arrived and he was quite right.Every room was stuffed to the ceiling. We’d agreed to take on the task, so we simply rolled up our sleeves and got down to it. We dealt with the pos-sessions, sorted out what would be of comfort to the owner in his new residence, and what should go to Good Will. “That was back in 1996, and we’ve been doing it ever since.”

In talking about their company Judy, whose gentle warmth and practi-cal common sense could reassure the most nervous down-sizer, admits she loves what she does.

“We feel that we’ve really found our calling. There’s

nothing like the positive feeling you get when you’ve helped people through such a very stressful time.

Judy says nothing matches experience.

“Over the years we’ve learned a lot. We try to make every move as smooth and stress-free as possible. We make it a point to allow lots of time to meet with the family, or the individual, ahead of time and to stay in touch before, during and yes, even after the move,” she says.

Twelve years of being in the business of moving has taught the Robinsons a great deal: not just about the physical side of mov-ing, but dealing gently, sup-portively, and sympatheti-cally with the intangibles. The memories. The loss of the familiar. The shock of suddenly realizing that a much loved home is now a thing of the past.

“Experience has taught us a lot,” said Doug. “Every-thing from how to carry a hide-a-bed so it doesn’t spring open on you when you go through a door, to helping with estate plan-ning and even resolving contentious family issues – and believe me, these can be very, very difficult and create enormous animos-ity and bitterness.

“I’d like to say that in our years of helping people move on we’ve seen every-thing, but I hesitate. After all, you’re never quite sure what’s waiting for you when the phone rings next, or what you may encoun-ter with a new move.”

The Robinsons started off, 12 years ago, doing everything themselves. Today their services are so much in demand they’ve built a solid team of sup-porters and workers. Their business is mostly centred in Ottawa, but they have also helped out with moves in Montreal and Toronto.

At the moment they’re trying to find time to put the finishing touches on a book they’ve written together that, they hope, will provide a solid road map on how to downsize without hitting too many potholes or unexpected curves along the way.

“Through an amazing coincidence, Dave Chilton, the Wealthy Barber, got to take a look at our man-uscript and got in touch with us. He was incredibly positive and suggested an editor in Toronto who has since called us and asked us to send her with a copy.

Time for financial spring cleaningFor many people, a

weekend of vigorous house cleaning is a rite of spring. And spring can also be an excellent time to clean up your financial situation — with RRSP season and the filing of personal income taxes now behind you.

Here are some actions that almost everyone can take to make their finan-cial lives tidier.

1.) Organize your financial records. If you find you always file your taxes at the last minute, now is the perfect time to organize your financial records, because you’ve probably got them close at hand. And it’s not just a matter of having your brokerage and RRSP state-

ments in nice, neat piles. Once you’ve got these docu-ments together, you might see opportunities for con-solidation. For example, you may have RRSPs with different financial institu-tions. By moving them all to one provider, you could

save some fees, reduce your paperwork, and find it’s simpler to manage your investments.

2.) Assess your port-folio’s diversification. Over time, you may have built a sizable investment portfolio. But if it lacks diversification, you may be hindering your prog-ress toward your goals. While diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against a loss, you may find it’s the best approach.

So look for opportuni-ties to ensure ample diver-sity with different types of securities, taking into account your risk toler-ance and time horizon.

3.) Review your “sys-tematic” investing for maximum saving. Many years ago, you might have started systematically moving money from your savings account into an investment. But perhaps the circumstances of your life changed and you needed money for other purposes so you reduced or stopped making those investments. Scrutinize your situation and see if you can get back on track with your savings through automatic investments. A systematic investment plan does not assure a profit, and does not pro-tect against loss in declin-ing markets, but is a great way to maintain your investing discipline.

4.) Check your ben-eficiaries*. Beneficiary designations on financial documents are extremely important, because they may supersede even the instructions in your will. Over time, your fam-ily situation may have changed, through death, divorce, remarriage or the birth of new children, so you should periodically

review all your beneficia-ry designations, as well as any estate planning docu-ments that you have such as your will and powers of attorney.

5.) Examine your insurance coverage**. When you have a young family, you need a certain amount of life insurance coverage to provide for some major obligations — such as your mortgage, education for your kids, or perhaps some retirement funds for your spouse. But when your children have grown, your mortgage is paid and your spouse has decades’ worth of retire-ment savings, your insur-ance needs may change. At the same time, you may find other uses for insur-ance. Take some time and review your insurance coverage with your finan-cial advisor*.

6.) Be a wise snow-bird. For people return-ing to Canada after win-tering south of the border, you may want to review what you want to do with your U.S. dollars. Instead of converting all of it back to Canadian currency, one

convenient option to con-sider is purchasing some U.S. dollar bonds, which can provide income in U.S. dollars. You might also want to ensure that you have an optimal savings account set up. People who have investments in U.S. and Canadian dollars may find that having a savings account in both curren-cies is a wise choice to handle ongoing accrual from sources such as stock dividends and bond interest. While away, their money is working hard for them. When they come back, there’s easy access to the funds, with every-thing consolidated to keep things simple.
