Message from the Acting Principal

Powerful words from our lectionary this week. Mr Arbon spoke of rules that God gave Moses, The Ten Commandments. There are many rules we have to abide by in our daily life but none more important than those given to Moses. So powerful that our laws and policies are based upon. I urge you all to have these words and thoughts in your prayers as we move closer to arguably the holiest day on our calendar, the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ on Christmas Day.

Student SuccessFor a small regional independ-ent school, we really ‘punch above our weight’ to use a sporting analogy and in this case it is sport that our amaz-ing students keep achieving at high levels.Paige Moxey, Year 6 as you would have read in our last edition competed in the Na-tional Inter Schools Equestrian Championships has this week competed at the NSWPSSA Athletics Championships in Sydney. Paige was success-ful winning a bronze medal-lion in high jump, a wonderful feat! She has now qualified for the Sports Schools Australian Championships for Athletics to be held later on this month in Mel-bourne. We all wish her the best.Jordan Smith Year 3 is another of our elite athletes in equestrian. Last weekend she competed in the ACT Inter School Equestrian Champi-onship. A truly wonderful rider, Jordan won and was named Runner Up Reserve Champion (High Point Score); Champion Novice Dressage and Champion Show Rider in two different classes. Well done Jordan!

New Principal for Sapphire Coast Anglican CollegeDr Jill IrelandBoard ChairOur new College Principal from the start of 2019 is Mrs Tracey Gray from Western Australia. Mrs Gray’s most recent role has been as Head of Duncraig Campus at St Stephen’s School in Perth, providing edu-cational and operational leadership from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12. Duncraig is part of a large three-campus school. She has a successful record of helping schools grow and flourish, with an integrated philoso-phy of Christian education which values all participants in the school, and engages with parents and the wider community in innovative ways. She is a committed active Christian, and a member of the parish council at Grace Anglican Church, Joondalup. Mrs Gray is married to Steve, a business analyst, and they have two daughters, Emma who is 24 and Sarah who is 17.After a decade of experience working in banking and finance, Mrs Gray moved into education where she taught and led across government and independent schools. She has worked for the Association of Independ-ent Schools WA as Manager of Government Education Initiatives, pro-viding consultancy to independent school leaders on financial manage-

ment, strategic planning, school registration and board responsibilities. Early in her teaching career, involvement in developing programs to re-engage reluctant secondary learners led Mrs Gray to a renewed focus on best practice in primary school literacy, to help prevent later problems, and sustain students’ enthusiasm for learning. Her teaching experience ranges from early childhood to senior school, with a focus on literacy, business studies and vocational education. At her last school, Mrs Gray established wrap-around services in the early years, with a range of therapies being provided on the school site, and established service-learning partnerships with two indigenous outback schools. She also fostered progress in the areas of explicit teaching, play-based and inquiry learning, and assessment for learning, building on research into best practice. At St Stephen’s, she managed significant capital works programs including scope, community focus, planning, budget and resource management and liaison with architects and builders.Among her qualifications, Mrs Gray has a Bachelor of Arts in Train-ing and Development (Organisational Leadership and Management), a Graduate Diploma in Education and a Masters in Education with a focus on educational leadership, literacy and restorative behaviour management. She and her husband have both been engaged in studies at Trinity Theological College towards a Certificate of Christian Stud-ies. Modelling life-long learning, Mrs Gray is currently doing part-time studies for a Masters of Business Administration. In 2013, Mrs Gray received an Excellence in Teaching and Leadership Award from the Australian Council of Educational Leaders, and became the Vice-President of ACEL WA in 2017. She is also a ministerial ap-pointee to the Teacher Registration Board in WA.

As Tracey Gray has pointed out,“The best teachers know their content, but what makes an outstanding teacher is their ability to build positive relationships with the students, that not only brings the content to life but helps to shape the students’ character. Student engagement is what leads to deep, rigorous learning and creates an intrinsic desire to know more and, more importantly to do something more with the knowledge. When students are engaged, they are comfortable asking deeper questions, knowing the teacher cares and wants to support them. This is what excites me most about working with teachers and building capacity in them to build stronger relationships that bring curriculum to life. My leadership approach em-powers and supports staff members to be the best teachers they can be, to try and learn new ways of teaching and most importantly, to believe in them as professional educators.”

The Board is delighted to announce the appointment of our Principal-elect, Tracey Gray, whose cheerful enthusiasm will be an encourage-ment to us all as we seek to serve our school community. She hopes to meet staff and the new student leaders on a visit to Bega on Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th November. We are sure you will make Mrs Gray feel very welcome in our College.

Kindergarten NewsBy Renee LightlyHave you seen the Lighthouse Garden lately? Our sunflowers have sprouted, radishes are ready for eating and our snowpeas are climb-ing. Children are enjoying the cubby house and have been patiently waiting for the mulberries to ripen. We have been rehearsing our play, you may have heard the lovely songs we will be singing on the night. Thank you for having your children’s costumes ready. If you’re unable to make it on the night of the production please let me know. If you’re having trouble finding costume pieces please let me know also. I’d also like to thank you for having your children so well organised for swim-ming lessons on Friday’s. This makes lessons fun and care-free for the children. This week and next week I will be spending time with each child to assess their literacy and numeracy skills and knowledge, which will then be communicated in their semester 2 report. These reports will be handed out towards the end of term. While I complete assessments Mrs Louie and Ms Miller will be taking the class. We sadly say goodbye Rory in week 7, when his family will be heading back to Queensland. We’ll have a farewell morning tea for Rory on the Wednesday of week 7. We welcome Mrs Price back from leave with her very broken leg. So library is back to Tuesday’s for the rest of the term.

Nude FoodBy Yvonne Brown1/2B are enjoying Nude Food Wednesdays. Thank you to the parents who are helping with finding paper bags and containers to stop com-mercial packaging. Next Wednesday is again Nude Food Wednesday.Per-Kinder, Kindergarten and 1/2B wore red clothing and brought a gold coin donation for Day for Daniel. We watched two videos on how to be safe.

Kicking off for the NRL Gala DayBy Lynda WhymanWe had a great time at the NRL Gala Day with Damien and his helpers. The students were given teams and shown skills, then they were off practising in games against other schools. Everyone participated, sup-porting not only their team but filling in for and praising children from other teams. We wrote some descriptive sentences about the day and have included some photos.

“Riiipppppp” went the velcro on the black belts as we took them on and off. I ran excitedly on the field and our team got into our line.I was bust-ing to get forward out of the line. As soon as the coach blew his loud metal whistle, I was off with Izzy. The opponents had the ball. I leapt forward with all my might and ripped off the tag. I pegged the tag on the

ground so the other team had to play the ball. When the opposite team played the ball Izzy ripped the tag off. They played the ball again and a girl passed it but it came to me at a hard pace. I caught it and ran as hard as I could through the other team, weav-ing and curving so the opposite team didn’t get my tag.I ran through them without stopping and scored my very first try. My team ran over and congratulated me.”By Sara

Thankyou to everyone who has assisted in preparing costumes for our Primary Christmas play. We have been soooo busy designing and preparing Roman Soldier costumes, backdrops, character moves and songs. It is going to be spectacular when we all come together. Please make sure you book your tickets early!

Looking for LeadersBy Myfanwy RussellAnd here we are again! Week 4 is almost over! It’s amazing how fast this term has gone. Not just the term but the year as well! We all sat around the calendar this morning and recorded all the things we have on and need to complete over the next few weeks. The biggest obvi-ously is the Christmas Play and we also have the privilege of designing and making the decorations, as part of our Arts program, for the Year 6 Graduation. For Year 5 in particular, their biggest task set today in fact, is the decision to apply for a leadership position for 2019. I strongly encourage all Year 5 students to apply and be a part of the process. It is a huge step to make to apply and I believe all of my Year 5 students have the capability to give back to the school through this position in a multitude of different ways. You should, by now, have read the leader-ship information notes, I would ask that you talk with your child about the process and encourage them also to apply. Swimming is going re-ally well and haven’t we been blessed with some great weather for our Fridays! We are continuing to look at our new writing program and have seen some creative thinking and writing. Maths is powering ahead with explicit instruction, varying tasks and lots of time to check for understanding. We are also enjoying reading the bible daily and using it also as our fluency passages. As you can see, busy busy busy! But we are all ready to keep going and get through the things we need to. Until next time.

The University of Wollongong Bega Campus extends an invitation to all Year 6 students to participate in the FREE Kids In2Uni Program 2018.

The In2Uni Program is a partnership with the University of Wollongong, Department of Education & Communities and Catholic Education Office to encourage students to aspire and access higher education once they have completed school. Kids In2Uni is for Year 6 students and aims to start the conversation with students about higher education. It gives students the opportunity to experience university, interact with university students and staff and think about why they might like to consider study beyond school.

What does the program look like?

Kids In2Uni is a teacher delivered module that links to the NSW Curriculum. The program involves:

• A unit of work delivered by trained primary school teaching staff• A visit to the University of Wollongong Bega Campus by students, parents and teachers.

This model is designed to raise awareness of university and introduces students to the idea of study beyond school. The Kids In2Uni campus day complements this by allowing students to build a positive connection with university and experience what it’s like to be a university student.

Year 6 students will be participating in the on-campus visit on Thursday, 22nd November 2018.

We look forward to welcoming everyone to the UOW Bega Campus!

The new nationally consistent training program for teachers and school staff will be targeted at every school with a student with type 1 diabetes and this will cover the safe administration of insulin, hypoglycemia (low blood glucose level) management, and ‘normalising’ diabetes in schools so the students are not stigmatised.

The program will also clarify the legal framework for diabetes management in schools and resolve any confusion over who can train school staff, and which school staff should be trained.

To ensure the new program meets the needs of schools, students and parents, and builds on all the good work already happening, we want to hear from you about what works and what needs to be improved.
