PARADISE CANYON ELEMENTARY MULTI-PURPOSE BUILDING

The new multi-purpose building at Paradise Canyon Elementary School is a modest structure that attempts to meet multiple needs in a single project. The building serves as theater, gymnasium, and meeting hall. Situated on the campus as a hinge between the existing kitchen, athletic fields, and public parking area, the project is able to host students during the day and public events in the evenings.

The panelized roof system and charcoal-colored masonry are set against a band of channel glass glazing system. This glazing eliminates direct glare in the space while transmitting an even light throughout the space. The project creates opportunity within a limited material palette, restrained formal maneuvers and a limited budget. The project is about the singular gesture of a folding roof plane and what it can contain.

PALM CREST ELEMENTARY MULTI-PURPOSE BUILDING

Osborn designed the new multipurpose building at Palm Crest Elementary School within the La Cañada Unified School District, in California. The existing undersized building was demolished and a new 5,000 square foot facility took its place. The new building features a stage for school productions and a warming kitchen for daily cafeteria use. The main interior space is able to accommodate half the school for lunch, instead of a third as the previous facility allotted. A conference room and restrooms are added amenities for the staff.

Built on steeply sloped space, the building contends with issues of accessibility that are present throughout the campus. The building is situated to mediate between various levels ofthe campus by seizing an oppurtunity at each height. A new ramp also serves as school signage and a place to sit and wait for parents or buses.

aiarcJOHN ADAMS MIDDLE SCHOOL

The John Adams Middle School project in Santa Monica combines facilities renovation, a major remodel of existing spaces, and new construction. The new attendance office building is located at the main entrance to the current campus. This, along with the reorganized and expanded main office, serves an anchoring function to each side of the main entry and acts as a secure gateway to the rest of the campus. On the opposite side, three replacement classroom buildings and landscaped break-out areas constitute a renovated presence along 17th Street. By sharing the same elevation with the adjacent Commons, these updated classroom facilities improve connections to the rest of the campus.

aiarcMAG-LUV GREEN POWER TRANSIT SOLUTIONS

We proposed to erode a portion of the freeway monarchy and supplant it with a new object, mode, and form for adoration – Mag Luv. Mag Luv, a high speed magnetic levitation peripheral train variously appropriates freeway, right-of-way, and dream space to become the mega structure of the Los Angeles transit system. This loop circumnavigates the city connecting the 7 wastewater treatment plants and providing 12 hubs of activity, transportation options, and power production.

The intersection of transit and water infrastructure bears opportunities in the system. The Mag Luv stations become moments of public confrontation in the complex mixing of collected wastewater, rainwater, and run-off as well as the natural and man-made channels, rivers, flood control structures, and sewers through which this water runs. The constructed abundance of water at these intersections bears programs and public spaces such as aquatic floral gardens, wetland habitats, hydroponic farms, and aquariums. Unusual and surreal, these moments further imprint the Mag Luv experience on a newly connected Los Angeles.
