  • 2020 has undoubtedly been achallenging and uncertain time for us allwhile we continue to battle the Covid-19global pandemic. Never in our lifetimehave we experienced anything like this -when we went into lockdown back inMarch, we didn’t think we would haveany football this year and that we wouldbe putting a line though the 2020season. However, as time moves forwardand while we are now in a place toallow the safe return of our games, westill need to be mindful of the publichealth and GAA guidance to protect ourplayers, families, friends and community.

Due to the tight window for clubfootball this season the managementcommittee decided to revert back to aknock out championship for this seasononly, so excitement has certainly beenbuilding since the draw a few weeksago.

First up will be the Senior followed bythe Intermediate and Junior thefollowing week. ChampionsCrossmaglen will certainly start asfavourites but after a few league resultsa lot of teams will have high hopes oftaking their crown.

Ballymacnab, beaten finalists this lasttwo years, will want to go one better.Maghery, Dromintee and Granemore allare going well in the league and willalso fancy their chances, but rememberit’s knock out and there will be plenty ofshocks in store.

In the lntermediate, last year’s beatenfinalists Shane O'Neills will certainlywant to go one better but Clan na Gael,Sarsfields and Whitecross will all havean eye on the Atty Hearty cup and I haveno doubt there will be surprises.

In the Junior this will be a lottery asanyone of five or six teams could win thisChampionship. No doubt Derrynoose willwant to go one better this year and theycould but Forkhill, Crossmaglen ll, Belleeks,Eire Og and a few others will have a say.

Once again, our Championships aresponsored by Cormac LeonardCommercials. I want to thank Cormac andhis family for their continued support.

l would like to take this opportunity tothank all of our sponsors and everyonewho have financially supported our countythrough these difficult times.

I want to thank the volunteers of LinwoodsArmagh TV for the great work they aredoing during the Covid-19 restrictions bybringing as many games as possible to oursupporters who are unable to attend dueto number restrictions.

I want to thank all our committees for thework they have done during the year. Iwould like to commend our referees fortheir great work during these difficulttimes. To our groundsmen, stewards, PROClaire, our office staff, and all ourvolunteers who make ourgames possible. Thank you.

Finally, l want to give a special thanks toour CCC for the unbelievable work theyhave done all year. For our supporters, there will be in the region of fiftychampionship games over the next six orseven weeks and let’s hope the games areplayed in the spirit they should be witheveryone backing their own team andrespecting match officials and opposingteams. I would just like to finish off bywishing all clubs and match officials thebest of luck.

  • WE are guaranteed the strangestArmagh Senior Championship we’vehad, but could we be in for one of thebest in recent times?

A knock-out format and some interestingSenior A and B League results has left an airof uncertainty over the whole competition. That’s been a rare beast over the last twoand a half decades as Crossmaglen haveutterly dominanted with only Pearse Og(2009), Maghery (2016) and Armagh Harps(2017) breaking their stranglehold since theiramazing run started back in 1996.

New manager Stephen Kernan was given areminder that they aren’t going to saunterto the title as Ballymacnab beat them by 23points in the league, but you can guaranteethat the panic button wasn’t pushed.

Cross start their campaign over a youthfulSilverbridge managed by Ronan Clarke andGerard Treanor. The Harps provided littleresistance in last year’s quarter-final so theywill be hopeful of being more competitivethis time around.

The ‘Nab, no doubt feeling pretty confidentafter scoring seven goals in Cross, also havea derby day to start as they take on Madden.

The Raperees can’t be underestimated andthey have taken down a few Senior A teamsin recent seasons, such as Maghery andDromintee. Speaking of those two sides, their clash is looking more intriguing afterDromintee’s good start to the leagueseason. Maghery completely bulliedDromintee in last year’s group stage andwhile still heavily favoured, FinnianMoriarty’s side will surely get things a bittougher this time around.

    By Niall McCoy

The ‘dark horse’ tag this year could very well goto Killeavy. Ciaron O’Hanlon and JamieCosgrove have returned and they are putting avery good squad together.

It’s Grange up first for them, and if PeterNugent can get Ethan Rafferty flying, thenthey’ll have a chance of causing an upset.

One of the hardest games to call is themeeting of Cullyhanna and Pearse Og.Stephen Reel and Shane McConville remain incharge of their respective sides, and it was theBallycrummy outfit that triumphed when theymet in 2019. Motivation should be withCullyhanna.

Armagh Harps have been missing Joe McElroyand if he is absent, St Peter’s will feel that theycan push them all the way. The Whites have avery potent full-forward line and if AaronFindon can give them enough around themiddle, then they will have a chance.

Clann Eireann have welcomed back some oftheir experienced servants who had apparentlyexited stage left. Conor Bell, Ryan Hendseron,Declan Leathem and Danny McKavanagh areall back as we wait for this club to explode intolife at senior level.

In Granemore they will face a side that doesn’tseem to know when it’s beaten. EamonnKavanagh’s men are becoming the masters ofthe one-point win and it’s a fixture that shouldbe decided in the final minutes. Annaghmoreshare a lot of the same characteristics asGranemore, but they are really low on numbersthis year.

A youthful Mullaghbawn stand between themand the quarter-finals, and they will need touse that extra experience against PeterMcDonnell’s emerging side.
