Watch co-head coach Guillermo Hoyos on the sidelines of any Armada FC match, and there is no question the man lives and breathes the beautiful game.

When the seasoned coach joined friend and colleague José Luis Villarreal at the helm of the Armada FC in January, he brought a philosophy along with him. Hoyos, who once recruited some of the world’s best soccer talent, including Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, has been identifying, coaching and developing talent since he himself was a young, world-class player. He has not forgotten his experiences and takes them into account everyday out on the pitch.

The impassioned coach, who often describes his strict training regimen as a lifestyle more than a daily training session, has said he wants his team to play revolutionary soccer.

“I am not calling for a revolution, but I do believe it is about the way we feel and how I like my team to play,” Hoyos said. “It is really a lifestyle because the way a team believes is the way a team will play. We train with a lot of passion and heart. The players are the stars of this movie, and we are looking out for their best interest. Taking that into account, the players are the most important part of our team. We move the training session around them.”

Since Hoyos’ practice routine is centered on his players, he expects them to be highly invested in their training.

“Every time we come to practice, our players are evolving. We begin a process which goes

Guillermo Hoyos: Player Development Goes Beyond the Pitch

Page 11: Armada Matchday Issue 6 | Armada FC vs. San Antonio Scorpions - May 2, 2015

11

day-by-day. We create a training schedule that goes from Monday to Monday. We plan this for them and expect them to follow the schedule, through recovery and rest hours. So for us, it’s all about the evolution of each of these players. That is what we work so hard for.”

He also believes the process and the passion each of his players bring each day helps contribute to the team’s family atmosphere on and off the pitch.

“Every single process and every aspect of life is accelerated by feelings and emotions,” Hoyos said. “We believe in open leadership. It is a delicate balance, and we have always have a close look at when to joke, when to be serious, when to train hard, when you have a day at the beach. There is a freedom that we have here to laugh, to dance and enjoy life. What is non-negotiable is the work.”

While the co-head coach knows that his philosophy may be something inherent to his Argentinian culture, he also believes that it is something that can be built.

“It has to do with both, because as an Argentinian, the first toy that you receive is a soccer ball,” Hoyos said. “That is when we began to become players; playing in the streets. Some of us have the chance to play professional at a high level in leagues around the world. This is when we begin to develop our soccer profile. When we become a coach, we begin to understand the theory is a lot more than just our daily practice. So that is when you begin studying and travel to understand the coaching process. I really believe in my process because I began training with the little kids, and stage-by-stage, I moved up. Throughout every process I had to keep studying.”

He adds, “I can say this - a coach that only knows about soccer doesn’t know anything at all because soccer is about psychology, nutrition, sports medicine and recovery. It is all involved. It is a long process that has taken many years, dedication and love for your profession.”

After years of competing as a world class player himself, one of Hoyos’ key motivations is

“It is very profound to be a good coach. When you want to teach something like this, it doesn’t matter how many hours you have to be here.”

Page 12: Armada Matchday Issue 6 | Armada FC vs. San Antonio Scorpions - May 2, 2015

4.4.2015Match day

his ability to relate to his players.

“Something some coaches don’t realize is you never stop being a player,” he said. “I never stop thinking or feeling as a player. If you start to put

yourself in another position, then you will never have the range or share the same connection with your players. So when players have problems, as a player you will always to be able see through their eyes to feel how they feel in that moment. This is why I will never stop feeling like a player.”

A man of conviction, Hoyos believes a coach that can relate to players and understands the full process of being a coach can vastly improve the performance of any player.

“I truly believe and can scientifically prove that a player, at any age, can improve their performance up to 300 percent, through my methodology,” he said. “We begin a process of evolution with our players. When we bring a player on to train with us, we measure them as a human being first. And if we feel they are a good fit for the locker room, then we start this process of evolution on the field. We want the player to constantly evolve – physically, practically, technically, psychologically, and of course as I mentioned, as a human being.”

Hoyos spends countlees honor preparing his trainings knows the long hours are a neccessary investment in building his philosophy

“It is very profound to be a good coach. When you want to teach something like this, it doesn’t matter how many hours you have to be here.”

We cannot express how happy we are to be back home playing in Jacksonville and at Community First Park.

Today we are going to take on the defending NASL Champions San Antonio. While San Antonio is coming off a very rough start to their season, we cannot stress how important we believe it is to come out strong against this club.

The Scorpions have genuine threats coming from their talented squad including Rafael Castillo, Marvin Chavez and Billy Forbes, who all helped the club last year’s Soccer Bowl Trophy. We have been impressed with these player contributions to their team’s play. We have made it very clear to the players that we cannot underestimate this team.

While we did make a change to our formation last weekend, one thing does not ever change - possession, possession, possession. We believe that this is the key controlling the game, and we have done this well in the past two matches. We will need our forwards - Keita, Johnson and Millien - maintain possession of the ball to create scoring chances and if they can do that then we can shut down the Scorpions attack.

We also need your continued support that we have been getting from the fans. Without our fans none of this would be possible. We feed off your energy, so help us tonight by showing the Scorpions what you are made of. We will use your amazing energy to launch a fierce attack and hopefully give you a victory. Ex pertinacia victoria!

‘Pepp Talk’ with Cole Pepper

This Saturday when the Armada host the defending champion San Antonio Scorpions and next Saturday when the Indy Eleven come to town, the Armada have a chance to define the story arc of their Spring Season.

Last year, Minnesota United took the spring season with 20 points (6 wins, 2 draws and one defeat) in a nine-match spring. This year, with the Armada joining the North American Soccer League, the Spring Season is a 10 game sprint. However, the league is more balanced this year. It will take at least 20 points (maybe 21) to win, so let’s do a little math here.

Each NASL team has five home matches and five on the road in the spring. If a team wins fourand draws once at home (12 points), draws twice on the road and manages to steal a road victory, they would have 17 points. Not enough. Somewhere, a team has to find another victory (at least). Could be a sweep of home matches and an additional road draw. One way or another, without dominating home matches, it’s very difficult to win the Spring.

That’s what makes this week and next week so important. Not only are these the first two regular season home fixtures for the Armada at Community First Park, but these matches will also go a long way to determining whether homefield will be a benefit for Jacksonville. To give some perspective, last season, Indy Eleven, playing in their first year in the NASL, didn’t win a match at home until October. The Armada have already notched 3 points from the home opener, but that was at EverBank Field. Now at Community First Park, its time for the Armada and the supporters to establish the home pitch advantage.

As the Armada FC’s main man between the posts this season, as well as being the first player to sign with the club, goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo has experienced the pressure of building a club from the ground up. But then again, this isn’t the first time the experienced net minder has been in this position. Gallardo has a passion for his position and a history of success. He also sees a bright future for his new team as the Armada FC progress through their inaugural season.

5.2.2015Match day

Q: You moved to Texas when you were about 15. How was that transition, and how did it help create the man you are today?

It was, obviously, a tough transition. I was just a young man, and it was hard to leave my high school and all my friends in Mexico to come to Texas. It was a completely new country, a completely new language and my family was going through some hardship

at the time. I had to grow up faster than a typical 15- year-old kid. So that definitely set a foundation for the man I have become today.

Q: What inspired you to play the game when you were young?

I have always been a very competitive person. When I was younger, that was the sport we played in my hometown. Everyone played, and I always wanted to be the best. Even if I wasn’t going to be the best, I was still going to try. So it is really my competiveness and always trying to be a protagonist. That has really forced me to work hard and be the best that I can be.

Q: How did you get the call to go play for Tigres?

When I was about 16 or 17, I was playing for one of the Sunday league teams in Texas. Tigres and other Mexican teams would come play tournaments with their reserves. A lot of the times we got to play against those guys. A lot of the time they would invite me to go back and play with them in Mexico, I could not go. Also, my family was going through a difficult time, and they needed my help. It wasn’t until I was 21-years-old that I finally got my green card and I picked up the phone and called the same guys from Tigres that offered me the chance four years earlier. I asked him if he remembered me. He said no but he would give me the chance and a shot to come and play. I went down there. They had me train with the 15-year-old goalkeepers, and they realized very soon I had some potential. Within 10 minutes, they had told me to stop and go practice with the main goalkeepers. They did an evaluation and gave me the opportunity to play with them right away.

Q: Tell us the story about getting stitched up during your first professional game here in the states.

We were playing against the Minnesota Thunder, which is now Minnesota United. They were coming in on the right side and crossed a ball in front of me. I dove to intercept the cross, and my teammate came across cleats up to do the same. He hit me right in the face and cut my ear. The athletic trainer came out and told me, ‘Your ear is falling off.’ I asked if I could keep playing, but she said no. The ref was coming so I asked her to wrap it as quickly as possible. At that point, I realized there were two other goalkeepers with Major League Soccer experience. I knew if I left then, I might not ever get to play again. So I stayed on and

“I knew if I left then, I might not ever get to play again. So I stayed on and ended up having a great performance, was taken to the hospital afterward, and got 14 stitches in my ear. I honestly think it is one of the best decisions I ever made.”

Page 23: Armada Matchday Issue 6 | Armada FC vs. San Antonio Scorpions - May 2, 2015

23

ended up having a great performance, was taken to the hospital afterward, and got 14 stitches in my ear. I honestly think it is one of the best decisions I ever made.

Q: You and the rest of the players always run over to the fans and thank the fans after a match, even after a loss. How did that ritual come to be?

We are lucky here to be a part of a new team and help make history. We are building a new culture here. Coming from a team that was brand new when I joined (Orlando City), I am taking all the positives that I learned being a part of that club and bringing it over here to my new home and build from that. I am used to being very appreciative. I also understand the importance of having great fans like we have. We just want to let them know that we are thankful, and we play for them; especially when they take time to make it out to our matches and support us out on the pitch.

For the last question you have two options:

Q: If you were on Dancing with the Stars, who would you dance with, pick anyone, and what dance would you do - or - if you could play any other sport what would it be?

I want to answer them both. If I were on Dancing with the Stars, I would dance with J. Lo, and I would definitely dance some salsa.

If I could play another sport, it would be baseball, and I would be a shortstop. Growing up, I played a little bit of baseball. My dad is a huge baseball fan. I think the shortstop is one of the guys that gets to play the most. I would hate to be an infielder that has nothing to do. I would become fat real quick. I am struggling in the goal as it is. Those guys are always involved and stay active.

In 2010, San Antonio, Texas was awarded the first expansion team in the modern North American Soccer League. The Scorpions made their NASL debut in the spring season of 2012. The club’s owner, Gordon Hartman, who is a philanthropist and native San Antonian, operates the team with a unique business model, utilizing pro soccer to generate financial support for those with special needs. All of the Scorpions profits go directly to Morgan’s Wonderland, a physical and cognitive special needs amusement park.

The Scorpions play at the 8,000 seat soccer-specific stadium, Toyota Field. The club’s loyal supporter group, the Crocketeers, boasts one of the largest memberships in the league with more than 1,000 strong. Despite being the only NASL club in Texas, the Scorpions have a regional competition for state supremacy with MLS’ FC Dallas and the USL’s Austin Aztex called the Hill Country Derby.

2014 NASL Champions

Last season was a monumental one for Canadian head coach Alen Marcina’s team. Marcina, who was promoted to head coach at the end of the 2013 season, led the team to its second semifinal appearance and first Soccer Bowl Championship in team history. In their semifinal matchup, the Scorpions beat defending champions New York Cosmos, 2-1. San Antonio hosted the Championship and defeated the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, 2-1, highlighted by Rafael Castillo’s acrobatic overhead bicycle kick.

Returning players Castillo and Billy Forbes will be counted upon to be scoring threats. The Scorpions also added extra power in the offseason with Honduran international and 2014 FIFA World Cup participant Marvin Chavez, Jamaican international Omar Cummings, Colombian youth international Cristian Palomeque and Canadian international Nana Attakora.

The Scorpion’s 2015 campaign hasn’t quite taken off yet. With losses to Tampa Bay and Indy Eleven in addition to a draw with Minnesota, the club is winless in their first three matches of the spring season and is currently last in the NASL Spring Season standings.

World Celebration NightIt is a truly world game with the emergence of new nations in the World Cup to the

international players that play all over the world. As world business has made the world a shrinking platform, so has football/soccer. In honor of tonight’s World Celebration Night, here is a little history on how soccer has evolved as the globe’s sport.

The very first “World Cup Football” competition was held in Uruguay in 1930 with 13 teams competing – seven South American, four European and two North American. The host nation Uruguay beat Argentina, 4-2 in the final in front of 96,000.

During the next 85 years, the Nations of the World formed six associations/confederations: Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Confederation of African Football (CAF), Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), The South American Football Association (CONMEBOL), Oceania Football Association (OFC) and Union of European Football Association (UEFA).

However, the international influence at the club level first became evident in the 1950s. Eddie Firmani, the South African player at Charlton Athletic, (English first division, now EPL) was transferred to Sampdoria, Italian League in 1955. Later Eddie Firmani managed the old NASL’s New York Cosmos from 1977-79 and had the great team of Pele, Beckenbaur, Giorgio Chinaglia and Carlos Alberto (Brazil World Cup winning Captain of 1970). The Cosmos went on to win back-to-back NASL Soccer Bowl Championships in 1977-78.

Today’s teams – the Armada FC and San Antonio – continue that international flavor with players from 19 countries represented tonight – USA (14), Argentina (6), Colombia (5), Jamaica (3), Mexico (3) and Trinidad & Tobago, Honduras, Cameroon, Georgia (Europe), Costa Rica, Turks & Caicos Islands, France, Guinea, Haiti, Iran, Spain, Sierra Leone, Bosnia and Croatia with one player each. Enjoy this truly international game.

Catch Bob Veal on the Armada Radio Show Fridays on Sports Radio 930 at 3 p.m. and on Bob’s Bootroom during Armada Kickoff at 11 p.m. on CW17.
