To celebrate professional soccer’s return to the First Coast, The Jacksonville Armada FC has teamed up with Orange Peel Entertainment to host the first annual CAN-DOO FEST the team’s first regular season match in the North American Soccer League on Saturday, April 4 against FC Edmonton.

Headlining the CAN-DOO FEST and the massive pre-match party event will be nationally recognized recording artist O.A.R. at Metropolitan Park directly across from EverBank Field from noon to 7 p.m. ahead of the Armada FC’s opening regular-season match up against the Eddies, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m.

“This is a big day for the Jacksonville sports and entertainment scene,” said Armada FC President Steve Livingstone. “By partnering with Orange Peel Entertainment as a presenting co-sponsor alongside Community First Credit Union, we have designated this huge music festival as our official pre-match party venue for our NASL kickoff and will provide ALL Armada FC season ticket owners with a complimentary admission to the CAN-DOO FEST as part of their match ticket courtesy of Community First.”

“Non-season ticket owners will also be able to get in on the event headlined by O.A.R. with a combined match/concert ticket starting at just $35 while limited supplies last. Combining both major events will not only provide great value with entry to the entire CAN-DOO FEST as well as a ticket to the Armada

FC v FC Edmonton match at EverBank Field immediately following the festival at 7:30pm, it will also create a huge and memorable occasion for the city of Jacksonville on Easter Weekend.”

CAN-DOO FEST will be a day-long canned craft beer festival featuring canned beers from Oskar Blues, Veterans United, New Belgium, Sierra Nevada, Sam Adams and Miller-Coors breweries. The live music starts at 1 p.m. with musical acts including Tishamingo and The Corbitt Brothers, as well as headliner O.A.R. Following the concert, fans will gather for the Armada FC’s March to the Match, which will leave Met Park at 7 p.m., crossing over Gator Bowl Blvd. to EverBank Field in time for the 7:30 p.m. match kickoff.

A successful recording and touring band for more than a decade, O.A.R. is renowned for an intense, vibrant live show and the communal feeling it shares with its fans. Since their formation in 1996, O.A.R. (singer Marc Roberge, drummer Chris Culos, guitarist Richard On, bassist Benj Gershman and saxophonist Jerry DePizzo) has logged millions of miles on the road and released eight studio albums, spawning such hit singles as “Shattered,” “Heaven,” “Love and Memories” and “Peace.”

Local event promoter Orange Peel Entertainment, headed by founder and principal Billy Catlin, have partnered with the Armada FC to make Downtown the ultimate destination for music and sports on April 4.

“There will be an incredible buzz in and around Downtown with this game and our kickoff event,” said Catlin. “Mixing amazing craft beers with music is always a great fit. Adding the Armada FC’s first regular season match is the icing on the cake for a package that will attract thousands to downtown Jacksonville.”

Our last match couldn’t have been on a better day. It was beautiful day, the weather and temperature was just fabulous, the surface of the pitch was absolutely perfect and it was really an impressive turnout from the supporters. So there really was no excuses for the performance. With preseason coming toward the end of its period and the players rather fatigued. These results are there to happen. We had not worked on anything tactically. So it was a good test to play against a strong physical side in Charleston, because we know that the NASL is a very physical league. It was very important for us to experience that kind of team.

Moving forward over the next couple of weeks we have some very exciting matches coming up that will really help us prepare for this spring season. The main objective is to look at the sessions and what we are learning in the sessions and apply them into the matches.

All that we ask for is to keep supporting the team and keep pushing us forward. It is truly great to here and field the support in the stadium. It gives us a huge home advantage.

You can already see in the preseason games the pace that we have in the team. All the way from our defense up to our forwards. Especially on our wide areas, with our two full backs and our forward wingers. The speed that they can penetrate through the defense. It is really about getting the team to understand their roles and responsibilities, the style that we are creating, the section of the field that we want to play there is still plenty for us to work on heading into the end of our preseason. We believe that this team will be ready come April 4th.

We should have known. We should have read between the lines last week when the Armada FC coaches and some players talked about their focus being on April 4.

April 4, you know, is the NASL regular season opener. That’s the game that everything in the preseason is pointing to. We were temporarily spoiled early on with a terrific scrimmage performance against the MLS New York Red Bulls, then a 3-1 preseason-opening victory over another MLS side, Philadelphia Union. But a 1-0 win over Ft. Lauderdale, a Florida rival in the NASL, was sandwiched between two losses to the Charleston Battery of the USL.

So what gives?

Probably nothing. Right now, in the midst of the preseason and with three weeks until league fixtures, the Armada coaches are experimenting with combinations. They know that the roster won’t always be fully fit. There will be matches where reserves are called on to start and different combinations of players will have to connect on midfield or on defense. And they’re still trying to find the best way to get Keita and Marcos Flores both on the field while playing to the strengths of both.

Here’s the challenge with those two talented players: they both like the middle of the field, but in different ways. Keita is a striker. A goal scorer. If you imagine the field cut into thirds from goal-to-goal with the center strip running from the outside lines of the penalty area down field, both Keita and Flores can flourish in that center strip. But while Keita is a striker, Flores is more of a playmaker. He can set up the other forwards. So do the Armada change formation? Do they give different roles than they have in their current 4-3-3? That’s why the tinkering must take place now.

This is the laboratory. We see the beakers bubbling and test tubes being poured, but the final formula hasn’t been discovered. Much better to tinker now than after the season begins on April 4 against FC Edmonton.

Jemal Johnson is no stranger to today’s matchup. In fact, the former English Premier League striker spent the 2013 spring season with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Johnson, originally from Paterson, N.J., moved to England at a young age and began his career in the youth academies of Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers. Johnson’s talented skillset has earned him 25 goals and 13 assists in 217 career appearances before joining the frontline of Armada FC this past December.

Tommy Krizanovic, Ramy Safi, Nurdin Hrustic, and Tyler Williams all have at least two things in common: they have all worked hard to become part of the Armada FC’s first squad and are all proud alumni of the Jacksonville University men’s soccer team. Supporters may recognize the familiar faces as they head toward the stands after every home match to thank the supporters many even know personally. The former Jacksonville University Dolphins take great pride in representing the city they call home.

Page 18: Armada Matchday Issue 4 | Challenge Match Edition - March 25, 2015

3.25-3.28.2015Match day

How does it feel to represent your city playing the game you love?

Hrustic: It feels great! That pretty much says it all. I came here when I was only 13 and grew up in a city that we have spent so many of our good years in while experiencing everything from middle school, high school and college. The best years of our life have been spent here in Jacksonville, so it really is just awesome.

Krizanovic: I sure I speak for all of us by saying, growing up playing club soccer and college soccer here, we didn’t know if we were even going to have the opportunity to play professional soccer, so it is a very exciting thing to get to represent the city we are from. Also, we get to inspire younger players that want to play professionally.

Safi: All four of us have played outside Jacksonville, but it is a different feeling playing here in our home city. Everybody who plays soccer here in Jacksonville knows us. Tommy and I coach some of the younger kids, so it feels great to be out there knowing that there are thousands of people in the stands who know you personally and are cheering for you from the bottom of their heart.

What drives you the most when you step out on the pitch to play?

Krizanovic: I would say that none of us are playing for just ourselves when we go out there. When you come from Jacksonville, you play for Jacksonville. You play for your community, you play for your friends and you play for your family. I have learned that is it a lot more important when you play at home than when you play overseas or in in another city. Like Ramy said, we have all played somewhere else, and it is a completely different feeling. It’s all about coming out and giving 150 percent in front of the home crowd.

What impact do you think Jacksonville University soccer has had on the sport in Northeast Florida?

Page 19: Armada Matchday Issue 4 | Challenge Match Edition - March 25, 2015

19

Safi: A huge impact. Not only athletically, but academically. If it weren’t for Jacksonville University, I would probably not still be playing soccer. After high school, Michael Johnson (former JU men’s head soccer coach) helped me get into the school. I think JU has really been a force behind building soccer in this city.

Krizanovic: I think we all started something big. We were all recruited by the same coach, so that really started to grow the game there, and the program started to take off. (The momentum has continued) with the new head coach Mauricio (Ruiz) coming in and continuing to build the program. It is really taking off, and that is great to see.

Williams: It really motivates the players on the college teams. To have great college teams like JU that compete nationally is just awesome for the community. It can create a feeder system for talent in the area.

Do you still go to any Dolphins matches?

Krizanovic: Absolutely, as much as I can.

Hrustic: It is hard to make it out there, especially with amount of work we have been doing, but I try to make it out there a couple of times a year.

Safi: I try and make it out to all the Alumni games and of course the rivalry game against UNF.

You all coach youth in the area. What kind of talent have you seen in the youth clubs in Jacksonville?

Krizanovic: The talent is definitely there. I think there is a trend in the soccer style being played in Jacksonville. When I first came here it was a very direct style, not playing out of the back and more success driven. Now you have some players coming in programs that are trying to change that. It has become clear that it is important to teach these skills at a very early age. There are

things that can be taught when the players are a little older. It is really about development in the early ages. The success will come, but the development is very important in having the ability to be successful later.

Williams: I think it is the coaching. It just such a professional atmosphere out at clubs like JFC. I have seen a combination of players that

Page 20: Armada Matchday Issue 4 | Challenge Match Edition - March 25, 2015

3.25-3.28.2015Match day

are very talented and some that were just developed over the years turn into really impressive talented players that are just fun to watch.

Safi: The culture of soccer in general is slowly changing from a more direct style to a more positional style. I think players like us that have brought our specific styles to the clubs here. And some of the older players, who even played on the

Jacksonville Cyclones (former USL A-League team) brought the foundation of the game to the city. We grew up playing with the foundation that those players brought. Without out that grassroots soccer movement established in the area, players like Tommy, Tyler, Nurdin and myself would not have gone to JU or played on the Jacksonville United or made Armada FC. Most importantly, the Armada FC’s presence in Jacksonville gives the younger generation something to look forward to. I remember when I was graduating high school it suddenly hit me – this is it – if I don’t go to college, I can’t play soccer. I was devastated. Imagine if when I was growing up in Jacksonville and saw there was a team like the Armada FC to aspire to play for. My passion and my desire to work toward that would have been tenfold. This is just an amazing opportunity for schools like JU and UNF to have the Armada FC here in this city.

What team would you most like to the Armada FC to go up against?

Krizanovic: I would love to see us play against Dinamo Zagreb (Croatian Champions).

Williams: Arsenal FC, for sure.

Safi: Growing up, my dream was to play for this team in Iran, Esteghlal F.C., which means independence in Persian. I would love to see us play them. I would possibly even play a half for them. They wear blue - I am a big fan of blue. They are the best team by far in Iran.

Hrustic: Actually, I would really like to go up against Orlando City S.C. Just with the presence they have established and Kaká playing with them. I would really like to start a Florida rivalry with them.

FC Edmonton is entering its fifth season in the North American Soccer League. The Eddies were launched in 2010 by Tom and Dave Fath, entrepreneurs and owners of the Fath Group of Companies. The team plays its home matches at Clark Stadium, formerly home to Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League, which has a capacity of 5,000. In the team’s first ever match they defeated then-NASL opponent Montreal Impact, 3-0. The Eddies are

spending their preseason in Jacksonville to train for their preseason. In 2014, FC Edmonton finished the spring season in ninth place but finish the fall season in third.

St. Augustine’s Flagler College has 13 NCAA Division II sports competing in the Peach Belt Conference. John Lynch, who is entering his 16th year as the head coach of Flagler, has led the Saints to a 30-8-4 record in the Peach Belt Conference since 2009. Former Saints defender Joseph Toby, who recently signed with the Armada FC, will be on hand to watch his former college test its prowess against Jacksonville University at EverBank Field on Saturday.

Jacksonville University has an enormous presence in the college sports landscape. With 19 different NCAA Division I sports, the Dolphins regularly compete against some of the top programs in the country. Head coach

Mauricio Ruiz, who serves as a color analyst on Armada FC broadcasts, will enter his second year at the helm of JU after spending six years as a member of the University of Central Florida men’s soccer coaching staff. As UCF associate head coach, Ruiz consistently brought in top recruiting classes for the Knights, including a top 30 ranking by various publications.

The Tampa Bay Rowdies have a strong tradition in

American soccer and resurrected that brand when the new North American Soccer League formed in 2010. In 2008, a group of investors brought the Tampa Bay’s original soccer team back to the modern NASL. In 2012, the Rowdies won the NASL Soccer Bowl Championship after a thrilling shoot-out victory in front of a sold-out crowd at Al Lang Stadium in downtown St. Petersburg. The Rowdies have a long-standing rivalry with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, labeled the Florida Derby.

The Carolina RailHawks are entering their ninth season overall and fifth in the North American Soccer league. The RailHawks play their home matches at WakeMed Soccer Park, a soccer specific facility with a capacity of 10,000, in Cary, N.C. The club is owned by Traffic Sports USA, a soccer event management company, which has organized multiple

CONCACAF Champions League and World Cup Qualifying matches. The RailHawks have standing rivalries with the Atlanta Silverbacks, as well the USL’s Charleston Battery and Rochester Rhinos. In 2014, Carolina finished fourth in the spring and fifth in the fall.

Your Jacksonville Legal Team

Jacksonville’s new professional soccer team, the Armada

FC, is looking for dedicated fans to come aboard the team’s

new “Flagship Fleet” – an active supporters group that will

assist the team in promoting Armada FC around the region.

Flagship Fleet members will work directly with the Armada

front office in attending events, finding new season ticket

owners and assisting the Armada FC during call campaigns

and sales events. In return for their volunteer efforts they

will receive points and promotions that will provide them

with unique experiences and prizes including:

• A chance to win a trip for two to the NASL Soccer

Bowl

• An opportunity to travel to a road game with the team

• Have their photo taken with the team

• Attend a special dinner with the head coach, general

manager and team owner

• A chance to earn exclusive Armada FC Flagship Fleet

• See the game from the sidelines and take part in the

Flagship Fleet Tunnel that helps introduce the Armada

FC on match days

• Opportunity to sit in a special Flagship Fleet section at

Armada FC home matches

Flagship Fleet volunteers will receive points for every

hour they volunteer and every ticket they help sell in the

community. The more they contribute, the higher they will

be promoted through the ranks of the Fleet which will

qualify them for great experiences and prizes.

A supporter is someone that lives and dies with every result. A supporter’s passion, energy, and pride is unrivaled and the culture takes on a life of its own. At Section 904, it’s our mission to represent the Armada FC and the greater Jacksonville area to the fullest. We invite you to check us out and show your pride.

After 50 years of playing, coaching and following soccer, I finally anchored myself in Jacksonville, Fla., 14 years ago and jumped aboard the good ship Armada last year.

Each match in this article I will look from above, at the way the Armada FC plays the beautiful game of soccer with a concentration on formations, systems, tactics and the technical aspects of the game. This will be in the format of analyzing past games and looking ahead at future games.

The word Armada comes from the great collections of warships that sailed the oceans blue, whilst engaging in tactical sea battles. As we embark on our first season and the many soccer battles within the NASL, let’s keep in mind what the coaches and the staff, on and off the field, are trying to achieve.

For the coaches, it is a winning soccer team that plays attractive, attacking soccer and is a pleasure for our fans to watch. To achieve this, we play a high pressing, attacking midfield with fast overlapping fullbacks. For the staff, it is creating a fan-friendly environment where the family can enjoy themselves in a safe and fun atmosphere.

For our young fans who play the game and the new youth coaches out there, look for the different skills and formations that you can work on at your practices; especially the positions defenders, midfielders and forwards take up during different phases of the game. I will cover many of these in this article each week and also in my weekly “Bob’s Bootroom” segment on the Armada Kickoff television show (Fridays at 11 p.m. on CW17).

I look forward to providing my insights each week in this, your program, for all Armada FC home games.

Catch Bob Veal on the Armada Radio Show Fridays on Sports Radio 930 at 3:00 p.m. and on Bob’s Boot Room during Armada Kickoff at 11:00p.m. on CW17.
