The insulation of mechanical services is one of the single most effective measures for improving the energy efficiency and prolonging the lifespan of equipment. Aside from restricting energy losses, insulation also prevents condensation and the associated risks of pipe corrosion and mould growth.
In spite of the ever-growing requirements for manufacturers and estate managers to reduce energy consumption, the value of effective mechanical insulation can nevertheless still be underestimated.
This is surprising given the relatively small investment required, with payback periods often 12 months or less meaning no short-term operational cost increases and cost saving benefits realised quickly.
Mechanical insulation products are also among the few manufactured products that save more energy than it takes to produce them. An eco-balance life cycle assessment of Armaflex revealed that over a 20 year lifespan, 140 times the energy that it takes to produce it is saved.
Armacell insulation systems are available for both hot and cold applications often providing combined thermal, acoustic and mechanical insulation benefits for vessels, ducts, boilers, pipework and refrigeration equipment.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY

One of the principle documents is British Standard 5422:2009, Method for specifying thermal insulating materials for pipes, tanks, vessels, ductwork and equipment operating within the temperature -40 C to +700 C. The standard sets out to provide minimum insulation thicknesses for specific temperatures and applications in order to achieve a good balance between energy saving and comparative cost of insulation.
Energy saving calculations are based on BS EN ISO 12241:1998, which the Armacell insulation thickness calculation program ArmWin adheres to.
Guidance on the correct application of insulation is given in BS 5970.
BS 6700 outlines the permitted rates of energy loss from domestic water supplies.
ISO 15665:2003 defines the acoustic performance of three classes (classes A, B and C) of pipe insulation. It also specifies three types of construction that will meet these acoustic performance classes.
Part L is concerned with the conservation of fuel and power in buildings and dwellings, with a number of Building Services Compliance Guide sub documents, including the Non-Domestic and Domestic Heating Compliance Guides providing maximum heat loss tables for given applications.
From July 2013 all technical insulation products must be CE Marked and adhere to the harmonised standards for declaring product performance.
In addition to British Fire Classes, Euroclasses are sometimes listed for Reaction to Fire Performance, ranging from A1 to F with additional criteria showing smoke intensity levels (s1 to s3) and burning droplets d0 to d2.

Refrigeration and Chilled Water Services
Refrigeration and cold water services operating at low temperatures leads to the formation of condensation which can cause problems with corrosion, mould growth and subsequently reduced efficiency and service life of equipment if left un-insulated or without a water vapour barrier.
In many countries Armaflex has become the generic brand name for insulation of refrigeration lines and chilled water services. This is because it is ideally suited to cold applications due to its low thermal conductivity and high water vapour transmission values that serve to keep energy losses to a minimum and control condensation.
Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning
Insulation is an essential part of ducted heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems since the large surface areas cause significant heat losses/gains and problems with condensation, mould growth and poor indoor air quality.
Armaflex is dust, formaldehyde and fibre free and comes with in-built Microban antimicrobial protection for additional safe guarding against mould growth. Wide sheet and silver foil laminated variations are also available specifically for ductwork applications.
Heating and Plumbing
The insulation of hot pipework can easily reduce heat losses by as much as 87% and make a significant contribution to improving boiler efficiency.
The insulation of cold water services is also important in order to minimise the risk of pipes freezing in sub zero temperatures.
In addition plumbing services and waste water pipes are a leading cause of unwanted noise in buildings, and Armacells pipe insulation and acoustic insulation solutions can help play an important sound absorbing and de-coupling function.

Manufacturing Industries
Process industry equipment including pipework, ducts, vessels, valves and flanges should be insulated to help ensure that steam, hot water, hot gasses or cold liquids and gases are delivered at controlled levels.
Elastomeric thermal and acoustic insulation systems are suitable for both high and low temperature process applications and easy to fabricate Armaflex sheet or tubes (up to 114mm diameter) can be used to minimise heat loss/gain, improve process efficiencies, control condensation and provide mechanical impact and personnel protection.
Industrial, Marine and Petrochemical
One of the greatest challenges of insulation in marine, offshore and heavy industrial environments is the issue of Corrosion Under Insulation which causes pipe and metal cladding systems to rust and decay and results in complete loss of thermal performance.
Closed cell insulation and non-metallic covering systems, including materials developed for cryogenic temperatures, provide an excellent alternative for thermal and acoustic insulation and protection against mechanical impact, chemicals and salt water. Pre-fabricated fittings are also available to cut down on-site installation times in hazardous and critical environments.
Renewables
Armacell has developed UV resistant and high temperature insulation ideal for solar hot water systems and for insulating above ground pipework on ground source heat pump systems to maximise efficiency.

TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Thermal Conductivity ( factor)
Thermal conductivity, measured in watts per meter kelvin (W/(mK)), is the property of a materials ability to conduct heat, with heat transfer across materials of high thermal conductivity occurring at a higher rate than across materials of low thermal conductivity. Elastomeric materials such as Armaflex have a very low thermal conductivity value of 0.034 at 0 C so are extremely effective for thermal insulation applications to reduce heat loss.
Condensation control
Where pipework and services operate at below-ambient temperature water vapour can condense on the surface, which is known to contribute towards many different types of corrosion. Preventing the formation of condensation is therefore a key consideration.
Elastomeric foams are well suited to cold temperature and refrigeration applications since the closed cell structure provdes an integral barrier against condensation and water diffusion, with a water vapour resistance (mu value) of >7,000. The use of pre-insulated pipe supports such as Armafix or Armaload are also recommended to reduce thermal bridges at fixing points and maintain adequate thicknesses of insulation throughout the installation. Insulated pipe supports also provide a de-coupling function to reduce sound transmission from pipework hangers.
Surface emmisivity
The emissivity of a material is the relative ability of its surface to emit energy by radiation. It is the ratio of energy radiated by a particular material to energy radiated by a black body at the same temperature.
The more reflective a material, the less energy it radiates. Silver foil coverings such as Arma-Chek Silver and metal claddings for example can be used on warm to hot temperature applications to reduce the radiation of energy from process flows. For condensation control, reflective finishes are not typically required since in order to limit condensation and keep outer surface temperatures closer to the dew point, a duller material is advantageous.

Pipe freezing
Since water service pipes are often located outside or in unheated areas where ambient temperatures may drop below 0C, the water can potentially freeze and expand, causing pipes to burst or connections and fittings to become pushed apart.
Pipe insulation cannot prevent the freezing of standing water in pipework indefinitely, but the freezing times are significantly delayed. For this reason local water supply regulations (Water Fittings Regulations 1999) specify pipe insulation be applied to reduce the risk of pipe freezing.
Since smaller bore pipes hold a smaller volume of water they freeze far more easily and quickly and insulation can be used in combination with a trace heating cable or by ensuring a consistent flow of water through the pipe.
Energy saving
The rate of heat flow from a pipe is largely governed by the differential to the ambient air temperature and heat loss can be considerable. In many situations, this heat loss is undesirable, contributing to the green house effect and reducing the efficiency of refrigeration, HVAC and process equipment.
Thicknesses of thermal pipe insulation used for saving energy vary, but as a general rule, pipes operating at more-extreme hot or cold temperatures require greater thicknesses and the greater the potential energy savings.
Protection against extreme temperatures
Where pipework is operating at extremely high or low temperatures, the potential exists for injury to occur should any person come into contact with the pipe surface. Insulation surfaces are therefore used to bring touch temperatures down into a safe range.
