ArkivDigital - Genealogy Research in Color

By genealogists - for genealogists

The company Arkiv Digital was founded for the realization of a genealogists being able to read the

archival material on his computer, as if he had the actual book in his hand.

To give the best opportunity to take advantage of our new material in color, we are constantly de-

veloping our program. We already have several features that make it easy to find what you are look-

ing for among all the parishes and volumes. Information from the Swedish National Archives data-

base is also available and the feature AID makes it even easier to collect, share and store infor-

mation.

We are constantly working on providing more information regarding the material in the database

and everything is available through the program. Our knowledge of genealogical research challenges

and joy, allows us to understand what you need!

We wish everyone good luck with their research!

ArkivDigital online - Users Guide

The program – general information The program is designed to make it easy to browse through, search for books or pages in the books.

The image database contains more than 37 million images and we set ourselves the requirement that

an image can be requested by the customer and "delivered" on the screen in seconds worldwide.

Please read more about this at:

http://www.arkivdigital.net/products/adonline/systemrecommendations

If you have a computer that doesn't fill the requirements entirely you can try it for free by installing

the program and then "log in" in what we call DEMO-mode. In DEMO mode, you have access to the

entire application without restrictions, but only two parishes: Älvsbacka (Elofsbacka) and Röke.

Overview of the program’s different areas and functions

When you log in the program opens a connection to our server where our entire digital archive

available. When you click on a parish or on a volume, the program sends your "request" to our

server, which in turn sends back the information you have requested.

The program window consists of a number of different areas:

1. Titel bar

2. Menus

3. Function buttons

4. Tabs

5. Search and Image reading area

6. Status information and AID-field

TITELBAR

At the top of the application window there is a stripe called the Title

bar. It shows the program’s name and sometimes even some of the

content of the actual window. It is usually blue which is Windows

default color. On the far right is a red cross, that can be used to close the program, buttons for

minimizing and maximizing, or restoring the window.

MENUES

Under the Title bar you will find the Menu bar starting from the left with the menu: File and ends

with the menu Help.

FUNCTION BUTTONS

Directly under the menu bar you will find a series of “Function buttons". Here is where you find the

Print button, the Bookmark button, scroll buttons, zoom in and zoom out, rotate, etc. The symbols

will give you a clue.

TABS

General information

The tab headers contain some features accessible via right mouse click on any tab. The red marking

on the picture below shows the shortcut menu that you will get.

The four options are:

Close tab (that was clicked on)

Close all tabs except the one (that was clicked on)

Show in separate window (red marking in picture below)

a. A window with only a few simple functions opens with the actual image in it.

Zooming and common navigation functions work in this window.

Open tabs

a. Displays a list of all open tabs.

Note: This feature can also be found on the far right of the row of

tab headers – see picture to the right....

The picture below shows the separate window that opens when you choose to "view in a separate

window". The window is primarily intended as a means to quickly cross check a task without having

to open a whole new tab via the "Search Archive" window. The window has limited functions.

Page 13: ArkivDigital Online Userguide 20121107 Eng (1)

13

The ”Search Archive” tab

Red markings above:

2. Advanced search options:

Click on the button to get the three boxes to

choose Archive type, County and Province.

Note: When you close this box your selections

are no longer valid.

3. NAD: This is information about where in the Swedish National Archives system you will find the

selected parish/archive). If you click on the link (blue underlined text) to open your browser, it

gives you direct access to the Swedish National Archives database's information regarding the

chosen parish/archive.

4. Info: In this area you can read important information regarding the chosen parish/archive.

The Chat tab

General information:

The reason why we created a chat is that we believe in the benefits and the pleasure of being able to

share information with others and probably also get answers to your research questions, and to

make progress in research in an easy way.

“Chatting” has become a way to communicate with friends and perhaps even discover new friends.

It's a bit like sending text messages (SMS) to each other on the phone, but in this case, via a PC and

our software ArkivDigital online. You can choose to be visible and accessible to all who use AD chat,

but on the other hand you can choose just to chat personally with those you already know.

We hope that our Chat will be helpful for anyone using ArkivDigital online.

Description

If you click on the menu "Tools" on the Menu bar, you will find the Chat option. Click “Chat” to open

the chat tab.

On the picture below (next page) you can see that the chat includes the following fields/boxes (from

left to right):

”All messages in the room”

”Users in the room”

”Search and add Buddy” (with the possibility to also remove)

”My chat buddies”

and a small box at the bottom left to write your own messages, and a button to send these

messages.

Page 17: ArkivDigital Online Userguide 20121107 Eng (1)

17

Explanations for the various boxes

1. ”All messages in the room”

In this box you can see what’s written by others and by yourself. All messages have a "sender" and a

time when the message was sent. Your own messages are marked with a different colour (blue) and

with your selected name in the chat.

If you enter (or paste) an AID a link, that the recipient can click to open the image directly into their

ArkivDigital online, is formed automatically. Thus exchange of information is facilitated and it could

be an easy way to ask for a solution to, for example, a reading or a translation problem.

2. ”Users in the room”

In this box you can see which ones are online on ArkivDigital online and have their chat turned on. If

you right-click on any of these, you’ll get more information about that person. This way it becomes

easier to find the person you want to chat with.

1. 2.

3.

4.

Page 18: ArkivDigital Online Userguide 20121107 Eng (1)

18

3. Search and add buddy / Remove selected buddy

You can search for a person whose e-mail address

you know or on the person's selected chat name.

The search results will show a more

comprehensive information on those persons

found to make sure to find the right person.

4. ”My chat Buddies”

This will create a list of people who want to chat with, without

having to write anything in the open message room. With your chat

buddies you can open your own chat room that nobody else sees.

Add a chat buddy:

Right-clicking a person on-line in the “room" will allow you to add

that person to your buddy list. That person will then receive a

request from the system to confirm that he/she wants to be your

chat buddy (and add them to your list).

Remove a buddy:

You can easily delete a person from your buddy list by doing the

following: Click the you want to remove from your friend list and

press the minus button just above the list.

Crossed out (red) buddy is off-line

Buddy with questionmark means pending permission to add

STATUSROW and AID-FIELD

application works correctly.

AID-field:

All images in our database have a unique identity code known as AID. The name “AID” represents

the international word for Help. The point is that all users of AID can use it to help find their way

back to certain information and also to help others finding information. How you want to use AID is

entirely up to each person. AID consists of information based on how we index our images and the

basic information is the Swedish National Archives NAD-codes.

Each image’s AID can be seen in the AID-box and can be copied in several ways:
