The All-Conference team and poll were releasedin conjunction with the league’s annual Sun BeltConference Media Days, which got underway

Tuesday using web-based video conferencing togive media members across the nation access tothe league’s head coaches. "Shay has had a tremendous career already,”said ASU head coach Brian Boyer. “She is al-ready moving up the all-time list for both scoringand rebounding here at Arkansas State. Shehas flirted with being a post-season all-confer-ence player the past three years and now it ap-pears that she is ready to become that player. She has had the best pre-season of her careerand I am confident that this will continue through-out the season."An All-SBC Tournament selection in her fresh-man season, Scott scored in double figures in22 games and pulled down double-digit re-bounds in eight others to average 12.7 pointsand 7.5 rebounds per game last year. Shenotched seven double-doubles on the season tobring her career total to 18 and led ASU with afield goal percentage of .478. I thinkmost coaches were probably not sure which di-rection to go with us. We graduated two playersthat had very good senior seasons in Ebonie Jef-ferson and Lyndsay Schlup, but I think they rec-ognize that we also have a strong group ofreturning players.”Arkansas State's season will get underway Nov.12 at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi IslanderTipoff, and the home opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff is scheduled for Nov. 15. Two exhibi-tion games are also on the schedule 2010-11.The Red Wolves will host Lyon College Nov. 1and Arkansas Monticello Nov. 9 in preparationfor the upcoming season. The Red Wolves return four starters and nine let-terwinners for the upcoming season, includingtwo of the three top scorers from the 2009-10season.

and Kieanna Wharton (Indianapolis, Ind.) haveall signed National Letters of Intent to continuetheir careers with the Red Wolves. Hunt, 6’2”, is currently averaging 13 points, 12rebounds and three blocked shots per game dur-ing her senior season at St. Pius X High School, while shooting just over 57 percent from the floor.“Jasmine is a post that is listed 6’2, but she playsmuch bigger than that,” said Boyer. “She playsbig and long in the post, which will be a greathelp for us defensively, and she fits our systembecause of her versatility. She handles the balland shoots it well from the perimeter and has thepotential to be an impact post player in the SunBelt Conference.”Hunt is the daughter of Julie Hunt and iscoached by Fernando Villasana at St. Pius X.She is also a member of the AAU HBA-TexasBlazers and is coached by Herbert LeDee.As a junior at Wagoner High School, Reel aver-aged 14 points and eight rebounds, while shoot-ing 51 percent from the field.“Laura can be one of the most physical postplayers that we have had during my time here atASU,” said Boyer. “She can be a physical pres-ence in the paint both on offense and defenseand has very good speed to compliment herstrength as well. “Reel, 6’2”, is the daughter of Ricky and HazelReel and plays AAU basketball for the OklahomaMustangs under head coach Ruben Diaz. Sheis coached at Wagoner by Shartese McHenry.Wharton, 6’1”, averaged seven points and fiverebounds, while shooting 47 percent from thefloor last year at Pike High School. “Kienna will bring good size to the forward posi-tion for us,” said Boyer. “She is a face-up for-ward with a very good shooting touch from theperimeter. Because of her size, I think she willcause some matchup problems with her abilityto step to the perimeter and shoot, in addition totaking advantage of post-up opportunities.”Wharton is the daughter of Gloria Wharton, playsfor Robert Anglea at Pike and plays AAU bas-ketball for the Indy Gym Rats under head coachJames Banks.“My staff did an outstanding job with this recruit-ing class,” added Boyer. “Going into the sum-mer, we had committed to signing three front-lineplayers, and this came during a year where there

were very few post prospects in our normal re-cruiting areas. Our staff had to stretch our re-cruiting base into different areas of the country, and I could not be happier with this signing class.Jasmine, Laura and Kieanna are each individu-ally talented but more importantly they comple-ment one another very well. Combine thesethree with the guards that we have sitting out thisseason and it makes for a strong freshmen classnext season.”

approaches, the pieces appear to be in place toreturn the Arkansas State women’s basketballteam to the winning ways that have become thestandard during Brian Boyer’s tenure as headcoach. Injuries and inexperience played a keyrole in the Red Wolves sub-.500 record a yearago, but this year’s team is healthy and builtaround a nucleus of veterans who are battle-tested in the Sun Belt Conference. The Red Wolves return three players whostarted more than 20 games a year ago, and thestarting lineup will be further strengthened by thereturn of veteran point guard Jazmine Taylor.Taylor will join senior forward Shay Scott, juniorguard NeNe Hurst and sophomore guard Quin-ishia McDowell as returning starters for the up-coming season.“We are looking forward to the upcoming sea-son, and one of the main reasons is because ofthe returners we have coming back that werechallenged and got a lot of playing time lastyear,” said Boyer. “We had several freshmenwho had to play valuable minutes last year, andthat will only help this team as we go through thisseason.“As a whole, I think we have the ability to scorebetter than we have in the past few years,”added Boyer. “Across the board, we shoot it bet-ter and our passing is better, so I think we aregoing to do a better job of scoring than we havein the past.”Taylor (Memphis, Tenn.) redshirted last season, but started in 61 of 62 games in the previous twoseasons and returns for her senior year with 197assists under her belt, ranking No. 14 all-time atASU. Taylor also has 132 steals to her credit torank 13th, and despite playing point guard, hasblocked 49 shots in her career to rank ninth inthe A-State record books.“Following the 2008-09 season, Jaz was votedas our team defensive MVP,” said Boyer. “Andto go along with that, she is a true point guardand a true leader on the floor. We struggled attimes last year with turning the ball over toooften, so we certainly expect her to help us withthat this season.”Taylor is joined by Scott (North Little Rock, Ark.),who has etched her name in the ASU recordbooks and has the potential to be one of the pre-miere post players in the Sun Belt Conference

this year. Scott was second in scoring and re-bounding for the Red Wolves a year ago, aver-aging 12.4 points and 7.3 rebounds. She scoredin double figures in 22 games a year ago andpulled double-digit rebounds in eight others, posting seven double-doubles along the way tobring her career total to 18. Scott will enter hersenior season at No. 8 on the ASU career re-bounding chart with 667, 22nd on the scoringchart with 963 career points and at No. 5 on thecareer blocked shots chart with 76.“I am really pleased with Shay heading into theseason,” Boyer said. “I think her conditioning isat a higher level than at any time since she hasbeen at Arkansas State. She is really locked inand has worked hard on her conditioning, know-ing that this is her senior year. We are going todepend on her an awful lot this year. She isgoing to have to be a big scorer for us as well asa big rebounder.”Hurst (St. Louis, Mo.) started in 29 games a yearago, and after being hampered by injuries in herfirst two seasons, appears ready to raise thelevel of her game this season. Hurst averaged11.5 points per game and scored a career-high20 points on the road at FIU and again in thequarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tour-nament against UALR. She led the Red Wolveswith 90 assists on the season and shot a team-high .795 from the free throw line. Hurst willenter her junior season at No. 20 on the ASU ca-reer steals chart with 105 and at No. 22 on theASU career assists chart with 152.“We all certainly hope that this is a healthy yearfor NeNe, because if it is, we are all going to seethe real NeNe Hurst come out. She has beenplagued with injuries throughout her career, butshe has the potential to be an all-conferenceplayer and we hope that she has the type of yearthat will allow her to do that.”McDowell (Monroe, La.) played in 29 games andstarted 19 as a freshman a year ago, averaging6.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists. Sheproved to be tough when the game was on theline, hitting the winning shot in the final secondsof ASU’s 77-76 win on the road at North Texas inmid-January. “’Q’ is the energy of this team,” said Boyer.“When she is on the floor, the speed and energylevel of our team increases, and she is a scorer.I think she compliments Jaz well in that she canplay either the point or off guard and at either ofthose positions, she gives us a scoring threat.”Senior guard/forward Breaunna Ellison is ex-pected to provide versatility and depth. Ellison(The Colony, Texas) played in 29 games a yearago after transferring to ASU from Lon MorrisCollege and averaged just over a point and a re-bound per outing.“Coming into this year, we had a hole to fill with

the loss of Ebonie Jefferson and what she gaveus defensively, her athleticism, her ability to getto the basket and her toughness and rebound-ing. That is the role that Bri will fill for us thisyear, so I am excited about her drive and desireand we look for her to replace some of what welost with Ebonie.”Junior guard Meghan Lewis started 10 games ayear ago and is a constant threat from beyondthe three-point arc. Lewis averaged 6.3 pointsand 23.2 minutes a year ago and scored a ca-reer-high 18 points on the road at Western Ken-tucky. The St. Louis, Mo. native knocked downfive three-pointers against the Hilltoppers, aver-aged just over a steal a game and blocked 13shots on the season.“We saw the strides that Meghan made from herfreshman season to her sophomore season, andshe is such a dangerous threat from behind thethree-point line.” Boyer continued. “I think wewill see a different level of maturity from her thisyear on the court, and she always has that po-tential to have a breakout game.”Sophomore guard Andi Watson (Jonesboro,Ark.) played in 23 games as a true freshman, with sophomore LaWanda Clayborn (Memphis,Tenn.) seeing time in 20 a year ago. Both areexpected to see increased playing time in the up-coming season, as will sophomore guard/for-ward Jasmine Taylor. Taylor (Memphis, Tenn.)played in 20 games last year and saw her play-ing time increase in the latter stages of the sea-son, logging 18 minutes per game inback-to-back February outings on the road atUALR and New Orleans. “These three players are a group that may makeor break our season,” said Boyer. “Each of themhave great potential. They all got valuable ex-perience last year, and I would consider them allas the most improved players on this team. ““Andi Watson has really improved and we expecther to be a difference-maker for us defensively,”said Boyer. “She is shooting the ball much bet-ter than I ever imagined she would. LaWandabrings immediate scoring to the team. She hasa knack for scoring. If the rest of her game, thedefense and toughness develops, she has achance to really help this team. Jasmine can re-ally be a benefit to our team because of hershooting ability and her overall understanding ofthe game of basketball. “Sophomore guard Lunden Roberts, whoprepped at Batesville Southside, will sit out theseason after transferring to ASU from WesternIllinois. Five true freshmen join the Red Wolves for the2010-11 slate, with forward Jane Morrill (ScottCity, Mo.) expected to challenge early for a spotin the starting lineup. Morrill averaged 13.3points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game

during her four years at Notre Dame High Schooland was named All-District, All-Conference andAll-State following her junior and senior seasons. “We need Jane to step in and help us immedi-ately,” Boyer said. “She has a lot of tools in thatshe can really shoot the ball, she is a good de-cision maker and she has the size to be a reallygood defender. In our system, she fits what weneed at forward because of her ability to passthe ball as well as score.”Forward Lexy Harris (Houston, Texas) averageda double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) andfive blocked shots per game during her careerat Dekaney High School, and was named Dis-trict MVP following her senior season.Guard/forward Mekena Randle (Madison, Al.)also put up double-double numbers each nightduring her senior season at Bob Jones HighSchool. Randle averaged 15 points and 12 re-bounds to go along with four assists and threesteals and played in the Mississippi-AlabamaHigh School All-Star game after earning All-Metro honors. “I’ve been very impressed with Lexy during thepreseason,” said Boyer. “She is a very athleticfront line player who will be very valuable for usas a compliment to Shay Scott. We will need herto be a spark for us at times, and athletically sheis very capable of coming in and being a verygood rebounder and defender.”“Mekena, even as a freshman, is probably thebest athlete on our team,” added Boyer. “Whatshe is capable of doing right away is being ableto beat people off the dribble. As the year goesalong, we look for her to improve her perimetershooting, and when she does, she is going to bevery effective for us offensively.”Freshman guards Hanna Qedan and Olivia Mad-dox will both redshirt this year after undergoingsurgery in the preseason. Qedan (Farmington,Ark.) averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds duringher senior season at Farmington, while Maddoxaveraged almost seven points and eight re-bounds while earning All-District and All-StateTournament accolades during her senior seasonat Millington (Tenn.) High School. As Boyer begins his 12th season at the helm ofthe ASU women’s basketball program, he hasthe opportunity to surpass all other ASU basket-ball coaches, both women’s and men’s, in careervictories. With 181 wins under his belt, Boyerneeds just 16 victories to take over first place asthe winningest basketball coach in A-State his-tory. Currently ranked fifth all-time in the SunBelt Conference for career wins, Boyer also hasthe opportunity to post his 100th SBC victory ashe enters the season with 96 league wins to hiscredit. To reach those goals, Boyer and the Red Wolveswill face a schedule that is challenging both in

and out of Sun Belt Conference play. Fourteenhome games, including matchups with six teamsthat advanced to post-season play following the2009-10 season, highlight the schedule. The Red Wolves open the regular season Nov.12-13 in Corpus Christi, Texas at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders Tip-Off Tournament.Arkansas State will take on host Texas A&M-Cor-pus Christi in the opening round before facingIowa or Southern in round two. ASU will face SMU in the opening round beforetaking on Akron or Georgia Southern in the sec-ond-round matchup.“I am very pleased with this year’s schedule,”said Boyer. “We will be a part of two tourna-ments that are set up to be very challenging, withevery possible opponent in both tournamentswinning at least 18 games last year. Our non-conference home schedule should be challeng-ing and very entertaining for our fans. St. Johnsis a potential top-25 team and both Charlotte andStephen F. Austin will most likely be post-seasonteams. Each of our non-conference road oppo-nents should really test us as we prepare for theSun Belt Conference.”The Red Wolves will host Henderson St. Nov. 30before road trips to Missouri State (Dec. 5) andLouisiana Tech (Dec. 15). Four consecutivehome games follow the Louisiana Tech matchup, including the final two non-conference games ofthe season. Charlotte and Stephen F. HEAD COACH BRIAN BOYER: Through 11seasons as head coach at Arkansas State Uni-versity, Brian Boyer’s name has become syn-onymous with success and the women’sbasketball program. Entering his 12th seasonas head coach at ASU, Boyer has climbed tosecond place on the ASU career win chart witha record of 181-153 and needs just 16 victoriesto take over first place as the all-time winningestbasketball coach in A-State history. UnderBoyer’s guidance, Arkansas State has reachedthe Women’s National Invitation Tournament fourtimes, including three of the past seven seasons. He led the Red Wolves to the 2003-04 Sun BeltEast Division Championship, the program hasproduced 18 All-Sun Belt Conference playerswith Boyer at the helm, and Boyer was namedSun Belt Conference Coach of the Year followingthe 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons. Although Arkansas State didfinish under .500 on the year and below the loftystandards that Boyer has maintained during histenure, the Red Wolves did advance to the quar-terfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournamentbefore falling late to the eventual tournamentchampions. The Red Wolves posted an 80-79overtime victory on the road against Big XIIpower Kansas State, and that overtime win, cou-pled with three other extra-period victories duringthe season, boosted Boyer’s overtime record toan impressive 11-1 in the regular season. Boyer directed the Red Wolves to yet anotherwinning season as he wrapped up his firstdecade as the program’s head coach in 2008-09. The Red Wolves finished the season at 16-14, posting victories over post-seasonparticipants Creighton and Arkansas-Little Rockalong the way.Although the 2007-08 season was expected bymany to be a rebuilding year, Boyer put forthwhat was arguably one of his finest coachingperformances, molding a group of unheraldedplayers into a team that produced yet another20-win season at Arkansas State. Faced withthe task of replacing three 1,000-point scorers, including the program’s all time leading shotblocker and rebounder, along with the all-timeassists leader, Boyer directed Arkansas State toa 20-12 record. ASU won a record 13 confer-ence games during the 2007-08 season, andreached the semifinals of the Sun Belt Confer-ence Tournament for the 13th time in 16 tries. The Red Wolves finished the season with thedistinction of being the only Division I programin the country with a winning record that did nothave a single player who averaged double fig-

The Red Wolves finished 2007 witha 6-7 record, but went on a tear in the New Year, closing out the season with a 14-5 finish and arun to the semifinals of the SBC Tournament forthe fourth consecutive season.Like always, the 2007-08 team was especiallytough at home, posting a 13-2 record at the ASUConvocation Center that included a 9-0 recordagainst Sun Belt Conference opponents. In the 2006-07 season the Red Wolves finished21-13, advanced to the second round of theWNIT before falling to eventual tournament run-ner-up Wisconsin, and continued to build on theiralready-impressive home record with a 14-2mark at the ASU Convocation Center. The RedWolves posted home victories over NCAA Tour-nament participants Oklahoma State andLouisiana-Lafayette, Southeastern Conferencemember Alabama, and WNIT participants SouthDakota State and Murray State. In all, 14 of theRed Wolves’ 34 games during the 2006-07 sea-son were against teams that played in the NCAAor WNIT tournaments. TheRed Wolves finished 19-10 overall and 10-4 inleague play, earning a share of the Sun Belt Eastdivision title as they posted one of the top turn-arounds in Division I, picking up seven morewins than the previous season. ASU’s 19 victo-ries that season were the most since the 1997-98 season, sparked in part by the best start inASU women’s basketball history – a seven gamewin streak to open the season. The strong startcarried over into Sun Belt play as the RedWolves held the top spot in the East division fromstart to finish. Davie earned honorable-mentionall-conference honors as a true freshman, andBoyer was rewarded with his first conferenceCoach of the Year Award. The 2002-03 season capped a pair of rebuildingyears and resulted in a strong finish and a trip tothe semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tour-nament.In his first season as head coach of the RedWolves, Boyer led ASU to its first-ever Top 25national ranking, 18 victories, and a trip to theWNIT Tournament.
