Getting your driver license in Arkansas requires minimal preparation before embarking on the adventure. That is where we come in. We are here to help you know exactly what you need. Teen DriversIf you are a teenager on the brink of entering adulthood, chances are that you are currently dreaming of obtaining your driver’s license. In each step moving towards obtaining your license, we will outline and help you better understand each procedure you must complete.

Did you know that vehicle crashes are the biggest killer of teens in the United States? To avoid that, Arkansas has a Graduated Driver License (GDL) program. This means that you will need to hold a permit and two licenses before you get is important that

Instruction Permit

With this permit, you are allowed to practice driving while you are accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and sitting next to you. Intermediate License

The intermediate license is a restricted license that allows you to driver with the following restrictions for the first six months:

You cannot drive with more than one unrelated minor passenger, unless you are accompanied by a licensed driver 21 years of age or older.

You cannot driver from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m., unless you are accompanied by a person 21 years of age or older, or if you are driving to or from a school activity, church-related activity, job, or emergency.

You cannot use a cellphone or send text messages while driving.

Be 16 to 18 years old.

Have held a learner’s permit for six months.

Provide ONE proof of legal presence in the U.S. if you are not a citizen (U.S. Visa, U.S. passport).

TipIf you are married, have earned a high school diploma or a GED or are an active duty member of the U.S. military, you are allowed to directly apply for a full driver license even if you are under 18.



All DriversRemember that the roads aren’t always safe. Therefore, it is in your best interest to fully prepare for whatever may be on your way before you begin driving. When you become a driver, you not only take on the responsibility for your safety, but also for the safety your passengers vehicles around you and pedestrians. Consequently, in order to best prepare yourself for that huge responsibility, you must first hold an instruction permit to practice and enhance your driving skills. Regardless of your age, you must always pass a vision, knowledge and skills test before applying for a license. Let’s review them.

Vision Test

You must take a vision test and have a minimum visual acuity of 20/40—without glasses or contact lenses— to qualify for a regular driver’s license. You may apply for a restricted license if you have minimum visual acuity of 20/50 without glasses or contact lenses. This means that you will have to wear glasses or contact lenses to drive.

Written Knowledge Test

The written knowledge tests consist of 25 questions that will examine your knowledge on traffic and road rules. All the questions are taken from the Arkansas Driver License Study Guide. The test is administered by the Arkansas State Police.

Road Skills Test

The skills test will evaluate your ability safely drive a vehicle. The examiner will see if you are familiar with the controls, if you obey traffic laws and lookout for other vehicles and pedestrians. The suspension or revocation of your driver license is the consequence of traffic violations or numerous offenses on your record. Point SystemArkansas uses an Administrative Point System in which you will get points for different traffic violations. Three points are the minimum penalty for minor moving violations, which are those that occur while your vehicle is in motion. The maximum number of points that can be issued for a violation is 14 points. If you accumulate too many points, you may receive certain sanctions as follows:

10-13 points: Warning letter advising you that you may experience further sanctions if you accumulate any more points

14 or more points: Notice advising you of a proposed suspension action and that you may have a hearing to discuss the proposed action.

Driving Under the Influence (DUI)If you are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you can get your license suspended or revoked in addition to facing other penalties. The blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit is 0.08 percent for both breath and blood tests. You are legally required to take a BAC test if an officer requests it of you.
