Welcome to Night of the Open Door, Arizona State University’s annual open house

Listed in this program are the activities hosted by ASU’s colleges, schools, programs and student groups, providing guests with a sampling of the most innovative university in the nation.

There is something for everyone. Night of the Open Door is an opportunity for visitors of all ages to participate in hands-on activities, explore laboratories and innovative learning spaces, and speak directly to the faculty, staff and students that make ASU such a special place.

Earn your Junior Reporter Press Badge and learn how to interview people at this fun activity! The veteran journalists from the ASU Now team will teach students the basics of getting the facts and putting together a headline and intro, and then participants will get to test their new skills with a variety of ASU experts as their subjects. After their interview, students will write it up on vintage typewriters and an editor will give it the OK. If they meet their “deadline,” students will walk away with their official ASU Now press badge!

What do you get when you combine foam, glue, food coloring and liquid starch? Colorful foam! Participants will scientifically create the perfect concoction, deciding the color of their work, and more importantly have FUN PLAYING WITH FOAM! Hands-on learning is critical to students understanding scientific concepts. Research shows that hands-on projects help students learn better. This helps students understand complex concepts more readily and boosts their self-confidence.

Keep Your (Impaired) Eyes on the Prize!North Patio

The ASU Police Department will be present with Driving Under Influence (DUI) Simulation goggles. We will have a remote control car, where participants will be asked to manipulate

the course while wearing goggles that simulate a blood alcohol level over the legal limit. We will also have a fish bowl and ask the participants to shoot a ping pong ball into the bowl while wearing the same goggles. Simulated field sobriety tests will also be conducted, again while DUI impairment goggles are worn.

Participants will receive a Bio-dot which is a creative way to be aware of one’s emotions. Bio-dots monitor the stress a person experiences through the colors displayed on the dot placed on their hand. Wear the dot to monitor stress levels throughout the day. It also shows how your body reacts to different situations. Participants will learn relaxation skills to see how they can move from a state of being tense to calm.

Gumbo, a traditional stew originating in Louisiana amongst African Americans, means Okra, a must for any variety of good tasting, strongly flavored dishes. Usually a mixture of meat, chicken, or seafood with vegetables, there are as many recipes as there are great cooks in the kitchen. Join Dr. Duku Anokye as she demonstrates making her award-winning recipe. Come to see the ingredients, smell the aromas, and stay to enjoy the taste! .
