According to adults from the San Carlos Apache Tribe, the River had never been so swift or deep. We live in the desert. Praying for enough water to hold baptisms is our typical request. Monsoon Season of 2014 was very long, and very wet. In spite of this, lessons from the Church Bus again, taught in greater detail about the act of obedience to Christ through baptism. Permission slips were distributed, and plans were made. We never know how many will actually make this decision, and this summer was no exception. As we gathered on the San Carlos River, twenty-one children and teens made this important decision! Táági was baptized two years ago. This young man is growing in the Lord in amazing ways! He came to help. Both Táági and a teen that was among the decision-makers of 2014 added their ARMs to the Church Bus Team’s so that those who ventured into the swift current were kept safe. Alea chose to be baptized as well. Another precious moment for us all, though, was when her little sister, Mayleah, insisted that Alea help baptize her. After the event, one ARM Team member shared with her, “you know, now that you have helped Mayleah, you will also help make sure she grows up choosing Jesus.” The look of pride was priceless. Oftentimes, the little details of what we do are important, but not shared because of the greater details we want you to hear about. God brings His children at critical moments. When the above-mentioned Baptism Celebration occurred, we needed a woman to ride along with Linda in our van, while Bill went the other direction in the Church Bus so that all of those needing transportation could come. Also, the Church Bus was scheduled to serve sno-cones as an end-of-summer treat during snack time the week before. Such a treat requires extra ARMs. For the third time in five years, God sent Melissa to help at the perfect time! Many are aware that we are constantly working to complete homes for those in tremendous need on the Reservation. When God sends visiting Short-Term Ministry teams, their fees cover a portion of the costs for these homes. When they are not here, the work continues, but the cost must be absorbed by ARM’s general funds. Families anxiously await the completion of these homes! Their ARMs often join ours in getting that task accomplished. In fact, as part of the application process, each agrees to provide 200 hours of labor on their home. Each home ARM has completed is still in good condition, because the families have worked on them as well. We truly believe that Arizona Reservation Ministries is ‘GOD’s ARMs Around the Reservation.’ God provides the laborers…and we trust GOD to provide for the funds needed, too.

Baptism Celebration!

Because of those the Lord sent through Short-Term Ministry Teams, we were able to hold several exciting events! We were able to host a Sports Camp and a Family Fun Day, both at a park in the most-traveled area of the Reservation and a Vacation Bible School at the Church of Calvary. Because of ARM’s faithful reputation, and deep relationships with those across the Reservation, the ARM Team was also invited to participate in two special events! One afternoon, our Church Bus provided activities directing many to Jesus Christ, and distributed over 1,000 sno-cones at the San Carlos Apache Tribe’s Independence Day celebration. We were also blessed to participate in many ways, including prayer, at the one-year-remembrance/Bike Rally in honor of Legend, a Church Bus child that passed away one year ago. At both of these events and the ones mentioned above, those that have grown up on their Church Bus assumed a great portion of the responsibilities in setting up, running stations and cleaning up. We are excited to watch as the next generation of Church Bus team members receive their training!

We thank God for all of those He sends to join their ARMs so that projects are completed more quickly, and both the ARM team and those of San Carlos are encouraged! As this is written, we have several teams planning to join before 2014 ends, but to date, groups have arrived from Forum Christian Church, Columbia MO; and First Christian Church, Yuma AZ. Already, groups are contacting us to serve alongside us in 2015. Please pray for the Lord to send many so that much can be accomplished.

Backpacks, pencils, water bottles and more arrived with great frequency as the deadline for such items arrived in mid-July. Funds and gift cards also arrived! We were overwhelmed by the generosity of many! Names were attached by pipe cleaner to backpacks for those that regularly attend their Church Bus. Those names were on special lists, and the logistics of their lines on Distribution Day remain the same each year. We then have other backpacks for any that show up during the week of “Days”. Their names are recorded so that we can track these children and teens as well, assuring that only one is given to each child/teen. After this week, we then distributed the remaining backpacks to Apache-led churches, and the Tribe’s Social Services to provide for as many students as possible. Over 956 backpacks were distributed by ARM in 2014! That is a miracle! Thank YOU for your part in this miracle! Our Christmas Stocking and Fleece Blanket Project is underway! Photos and stories will be posted on Facebook, and our website. Those photos will also be shared in our February, 2014 Issue of ARM’s Quarterly News.

As mentioned, ARM’s general funds have been also supplementing the costs of construction. In addition, until partners participate, the salaries of our Native Team also come from ARM’s general funds. This past summer, ARM’s general funds were incredibly challenged as high humidity made evaporative coolers ineffective. Our visiting work teams relied upon seven window air-conditioners to provide relief from the 100+ days. This resulted in the highest electric bills we have ever seen; over $1,200 in July and over $1,000 in August! The church building where these teams reside while with us has no attic insulation and needs a central cooling system. Although our offices do have an efficient cooling system, it also has no insulation in the attic. In order to control cooling costs in these buildings, we need your help! Please pray for the funds to insulate both buildings, and install a central cooling/heating system in the church building the Lord provided so long ago for $1.00. We can better use the funds spent on high electric bills for ministry with your help. We need to raise about $15,000 for this project. Please spread the word, and pray about a special year-end gift toward this practical provision.

ARM’s Financial Update As this News is composed, the General Funds of Arizona Reservation Ministries are low. Although the debt required to continue to create homes, pay our tremendous utility bills and ARM Team members has grown, that debt is much less than in the past few years. We are committed to wise stewardship, simply asking for your prayers regarding our current situation.
