Requests for permission to publish material from this collection should be addressed to the

Arizona Historical Society, Tucson, Archives Department.

PROCESSING

The collection was originally processed at the Historical Society and reorganized by William

Tackenberg in September 1998.

ARRANGEMENT

The collection is arranged in three series: Manuscripts, 1953-1973 (Three Subseries-Travel

Narratives and Trip Reports, Published and Unpublished Essays by Eckhart, and Manuscripts

by Others Collected by Eckhart); Eckhart Mission and Trip Photos, 1953-1971; and Frank

Eckhart’s Trip Photos in the Southwest, 1905/1926/1927.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

George B. Eckhart, author of books and pamphlets on Spanish missions, was born in Auburn,

Indiana on October 11, 1897. He attended DePauw University and transferred to Stanford

where he graduated in 1918. Moving to California Eckhart tried gold mining, a tour with the

Navy, and selling cars in San Jose, California. In 1936 he moved to Tucson to work in the

Page 2: ARIZONA HISTORICAL SOCIETY...Photo Album #3 Folders 31-34 Photo Album #4 Folders 35-39 All photos having no accession numbers represent images obtained from the photo notebook or the

baggage department of the Southern Pacific Railroad. He spent 31 years with the railroad and

retired in 1967. Eckhart served as Sheriff of the Tucson Corral in 1960 and worked on the

initial publication of the organization’s Smoke Signal. In 1956 Eckhart made his initial trip to

Mexico to visit Spanish missions in Sonora. Altogether he would visit Mexico three times and

took over 1,500 photos of missions, scenery, people, and churches. His visits to Sonora and

the American Southwest allowed him to become a recognized authority on Spanish Missions

from California to Texas and Sonora. Eckhart published his research in one book, Temples in

the Wilderness and several pamphlets including: ‘‘Spanish Missions of Texas, 1680-1800’’ and

‘‘A Guide to the History of the Missions of Sonora, 1614-1826.’’ In addition, he produced

numerous journal articles on his trips and observations of missions in Sonora, Arizona, New

Mexico, and California. George Eckhart died September 5, 1978 in Tucson.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The manuscripts and photos of George B. Eckhart represent numerous trips made to Sonora,

Mexico, Southern California, Arizona, and New Mexico in search of Spanish missions and

churches from 1953 to 1973. The manuscripts are in excellent condition with attached photos

depicting the various trips Eckhart conducted. The photos form a collection of images of

Spanish mission ruins as well as church facilities still in use at the time of his visit. These

photos and trips formed the basis for Eckhart’s publications on Spanish missions of the

Southwest. Almost all photos have identification of location, title of structure, photographer,

and date on the reverse side. The collection has been arranged into three series: Manuscripts,

1953-1973 (Three Subseries --- Travel Narratives and Trip Reports, Published and Unpublished

Essays by Eckhart, and Manuscripts by Others Collected by Eckhart); Eckhart Mission and

Trip Photos, 1953-1971; and Frank Eckhart’s (George’s father) Trip Photos in the Southwest,

1905/1926/1927.

During the original processing of the collection it was divided into separate photo and

manuscript collections. In 1998 a decision was made to merge the two collections since they

were intimately linked by subject, trip periods, and were received at the same time from the

donor. The integrity of the old photo collection albums has been maintained through a detailed

photo listing arranged by folders in Series II. Additional photos depicting mission ruins,

churches, and trip scenery were located in a fifth photo binder and two boxes. These photos

were mostly unaccessioned with no photo identification numbers. All photos have been

integrated into respective folders by the town locations identified on the back of the photos.

An additional two photo albums have also been incorporated into the collection representing

trips in the Southwest by George Eckhart’s father, Frank E. Eckhart, in 1905 and 1926/1927.

These photos depict scenery and prominent natural and man-made structures including Bryce

Canyon, Grand Canyon, Kaibab Forest, Zion Canyon Lodge, cliff dweller ruins, Monument

Valley, Roosevelt Dam, and street scenes in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Series I: Manuscripts, 1953-1973 (1.5 Boxes, 1.5 linear feet) Manuscripts are divided into

three subseries. Subseries 1 depicts travel plans and trip summaries, with photos, of Eckhart’s

journeys in Southwestern United States and Sonora Mexico from 1953 to 1973. Manuscripts

are generally in the form of travel logs maintained during trips by Eckhart. Folders have been

Page 3: ARIZONA HISTORICAL SOCIETY...Photo Album #3 Folders 31-34 Photo Album #4 Folders 35-39 All photos having no accession numbers represent images obtained from the photo notebook or the

arranged chronologically. Subseries 2 contains published and unpublished manuscripts by

Eckhart. Trips and photos provided the basis for all Eckhart’s published articles. Subseries 3

relates to journal articles and trip reports conducted by others dealing with Spanish missions of

related interest to Eckhart.

Series II: Eckhart Mission and Trip Photos (2 Boxes, 1.75 linear feet) Photos depict old

Spanish mission ruins, churches construction and architecture, and travel scenery. Many ruins

and village churches were located in remote areas of Sonora, Mexico and received infrequent

visitors. Photos have been arranged by town, village, or mission title. A detailed photo listing

attached to this finding aid and included with each folder identifies what photos were originally

contained in the old albums (photo albums 1-4). Photos include areas of California, Arizona,

New Mexico, and Sonora Mexico.

Series III: Frank Eckhart’s Trip Photos in the Southwest, 1905/1926/1927 (1 Box, 1 linear

foot) Folder #40 contains photos of a congressional visit to southern Arizona mining locations

in 1905. It is not apparent if Frank Eckhart was a member of this delegation, a photographer

on the trip, or simply came into possession of the photos. Photo albums depict two pleasure

trips conducted by George Eckhart’s father into scenic locations in southern Utah and northern

Arizona. Locations visited include Grand Canyon, Zion Canyon, and Monument Valley.

Additional photos depict scenery, street scenes and buildings in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and

lodging locations on the trips.
