PLAYERS TALK
06 Arizona Gaming Guide | February 2018 | azgamingguide.com
Q: I love playing progressive machines. I’ve always loved the
Fort Knox slots so when they came out with the new one I was
really psyched! I also love Walking Dead, 88 Fortunes, well
basically any game that has a progressive. I think it’s exciting
and fun. I also love the idea of being able to win a lot of mon-
ey by hitting a top progressive! This idea keeps me risking my
money on these games. The problem is I’ve never won the top
progressive. Of all the years I’ve been playing, the biggest win
I’ve won (and it only happened once) was the Major Jackpot
on the game 88 Fortunes for $817. That was a great win, don’t
get me wrong, but it only happened once. All the other times I
play I always just get the very lowest jackpot. Is it just my
really bad luck picking? My husband says I shouldn’t play
those games because I get too frustrated. It’s true, I do. Is there
anything I can do to increase my chances of getting a higher
progressive rather than just the minimum all the time? Would
I get higher progressives if I played max bet or would I get a
chance for the progressives more often? I usually bet some-
where in the middle.
Helen Hill—Phoenix, AZ
A: Helen, all of us here at the Arizona Gaming Guide love playing
slot machines that are connected to progressives because we
feel, just like you, that the progressive wins are added bonuses
for us to anticipate and get excited about. However, you must,
must, must read the pay table rules before you start playing any
progressive game. Many players are drawn to the tempting
progressive values publicized on the top boxes and think they
can sit down and hit a big progressive win by playing less than
maximum bet. This may or may not be true. Some games don’t
even allow players to win the progressives unless they’re bet-
ting the maximum while other games make all the progressive
levels available besides the top progressive.
Fortunately, nowadays, more and more slot machine manufac-
turers are trying to appeal to the general public by designing
slots geared towards the average player who may not be finan-
cially able to play the maximum bet to qualify for the progres-
sives. So, increasingly more progressive machines are hitting
the casino floors that allow the less than maximum bet player to
have a chance at one or more of the progressives. However,
every slot game is different, so don’t assume what the rules
are—take a quick peek at the help screen.
Generally, you do not have to play the maximum bet to qualify
for randomly triggered progressives that occur in games such as
Fort Knox and 88 Fortunes. However, be forewarned that the
higher your bet is the more likely you are to get into the ran-
domly awarded progressives. These games are very frustrating
when you are sitting at a bank with several people betting more
than you. The progressives become very difficult, but not im-
possible, to hit. In spite of this, once you’re in, your luck deter-
mines the progressive level you will be awarded.
This brings me to my next point … do your picks in the progres-
sive bonuses (or any bonuses that involve picking objects) even
matter? Well, in some cases the game’s outcome is predeter-
mined and in other cases it’s not! Once you make your selection,
the key is to observe what happens afterwards. If the game re-
veals what is behind the other objects, then your pick does de-
termine the outcome of the bonus and if the other prizes are not
revealed, then the outcome is already predetermined.
Say, for instance, you pick one of four treasure chests for a bo-
nus win of 500 credits. If the other three values behind the treas-
ure chests are revealed to you, then you are picking for your
bonus win. Your 500 credit win is a direct result of your pick.
That’s the good news! The bad news is that the 5,000 credits
behind the other treasure chest you were actually contemplating
picking, but didn’t, could have been yours if you didn’t change
your mind.
On the other hand, if the game doesn’t show what was behind
the other three treasure chests, then the 500 credit win was ran-
domly chosen by the slot machine’s computer program for you.
In this situation, you don’t have to spend five minutes trying to
figure out which treasure chest to choose! And, you don’t have
to feel that you are a really bad or unlucky picker! As soon as
the bonus is triggered, the random number generator selects a
value from the available options and then waits for you to touch
the screen so that it can display your bonus win animation.
Helen, keep doing what you’re doing. Play the games you enjoy
playing because when you’re having fun that’s when you will
be the luckiest! And, yes, increasing your bet does tend to in-
crease your odds of triggering a progressive but don’t feel you
should play max bet to increase your chances of winning.
Choose the bet level you feel the most comfortable playing.
We’ve seen and received numerous stories from people playing
the minimum bet and winning life-changing progressives! One
of our fans was betting 50 cents while playing Lightening Link
and won the top jackpot award for over $20,000. Another reader
also sent us a great story about her win of over $10,000 on 88
Fortunes betting $1.76. Good luck and have fun! $

The Goonies Now At Hon-Dah & Desert Diamond Tucson
his month, long lost treasure awaits those that will be
able to master the booby traps and escape the Fratelli
family. The Goonies, from IGT, is a 40 line, 80 credit slot
game that includes four random base game features with the
potential for a multiplier of up to 25x!
In the Copperpot Key Feature, players select key slots to receive
wild reels. In The Goonies Wild Symbol Feature, players pick
three bone piano keys to reveal symbols that turn wild if their
selection matches other symbols in the reel. The Goonies Up-
grade Feature changes all major symbols to the highest paying
symbol. The Goonies Credit Feature pays players for every major
symbol that appears on the reels according to the current bet.
The top screen displays the multiplier values that can be ran-
domly applied to any base game feature win. The candle to the
left of the reels sparks when a multiplier will be awarded (a
multiplier of up to 25x can be randomly awarded)!
The Goonies Jackpot Bonus is randomly awarded during base
game play: The top screen displays gem pointers that light up as
the player bets up. When the bonus is initiated, the pirate wheel
slides out on the top screen and pointers move into place as an
animated sloth appears to spin the wheel. Players can win up to
two separate jackpots in addition to a credit value with max bet.
The Fratelli Free Games bonus is initiated when three bonus
symbols land on reels one, three and five in the base game. Play-
ers are awarded at least four spins to move through the four
bonus game levels determined by a wheel on the right side of
the reels.
One of the most exciting aspects of this new slot is the in-game
camera feature where players can be a part of the game by tak-
ing their photo with The Goonies group that later displays dur-
ing big win celebrations! For more information on this game
and other IGT products, visit IGT.com. $

graphics, while mid-air haptic technology gives players tactical feedback
as they interact with the game’s 3D graphics.
Just shortly after being installed last December, one lucky player at the
Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut won the Sphinx 4D top

ire up your jackpots at Mazatzal Casino with the Tabasco video slots from
IGT. These exciting new games feature five jackpot levels based on the
popular flavors of the Tabasco brand pepper sauces and a golden pepper. In
the jackpot bonus, which can be triggered through the base game and the free
spins bonus, players must choose from ten Tabasco peppers on a café table. After
selecting a winning pepper, a spinning carousel with Tabasco brand pepper sauc-
es and possibly the golden pepper appears. When the carousel stops, the item
facing forward will award its jackpot. This familiar game theme that has been
modernized is housed on IGT’s CrystalCore cabinet which features a 42 inch verti-
cal touch screen display, USB charging port and a digital player panel.
And, did you know that Mazatzal is one of the only casinos in Arizona to still
offer the classic version of Caveman Keno with the excellent pay table? You can

than setting that budget with the idea that you’ll double your
money and go home a winner every trip.
Sure, you might double up, but can you get out of the casino
with your winnings? For most players, it’s as tough to quit a
winner as to quit a loser. You just get more chances when you
are losing.
Truth Number Five
Chasing your losses is paramount to disaster. The best-known
gambler’s fallacy is that if something hasn’t happened for a long
time, or has happened less frequently than expected, it will hap-
pen more often, soon. In other words, if you’ve lost a lot of
hands, you’ll win a bunch real soon. Well, good luck with that!
The truth is that every hand is independent of the last. It doesn’t
matter whether you’ve won or lost ten in a row. The next hand
is the boss; you’ll have to wait for the outcome. Enjoy! $

By Al Moe
ccording to 80’s pop act Tears for Fears, “everybody
wants to rule the world.” And, gamblers want to rule
the world around their table game. The problem is that
no matter how well you know the game and how well you play,
sometimes you still lose. Of course, that’s the point, or it would-
n’t be gambling.
Truth Number One
There are five universal truths about gambling and the first one
is that in every player’s life there will come a time when you
play poorly, the cards will thump you like a jackhammer, and
you’ll lose more than you can afford. That’s when the light will
suddenly sear through your eyes and burn into your brain that
you are universally, perhaps even galactically screwed. Take
heart; you’re not alone. It happens. The point is to learn from
the experience, not repeat it.
Truth Number Two
The second truth is that sometimes even the best play will hurt.
Still, you need to make the correct move, even when it’s coun-
terintuitive. Like betting more to lose less. When you have a
pair of eights at blackjack, you should always split them. Why?
Because a hard 16 is a terrible hand. It’s even worse against a
dealer up card of 9, 10 or ace than doubling your bet and
splitting the eights. Need proof?
When you stand on that 16, you’ll lose about $52 out of every
$100 bet. When you split them, you’ll still wind up losing
against those high dealer cards, but on average you’ll only lose
about $43. So, choose to lose less by splitting.
Truth Number Three
When we lose, it’s easy to blame the dealer, the cards, the cycle
of the moon, or the other players in the game. The truth is sim-
pler: we are all responsible for ourselves. It doesn’t matter how
strong the tides are from the pull of the moon; you make your
own decisions. And, no matter how crazy that player is on third
base, in the long run, you’ll win and lose based on your play,
not theirs.
Truth Number Four
Money management is nearly as important as playing ability. I
know it’s boring, but the fact is, if you don’t manage your mon-
ey, you won’t have any to manage. Setting a gambling budget
with the idea that you are likely to lose it is much more practical

TOP FIVE TABLE GAME TRUTHS Smart Gamblers Know These Five Universal Truths About Gambling!
TABLE GAMES
at a table where they are getting destroyed. One of the keys to
playing a winning game of blackjack is to keep your emotions
out of the game. You must be able to look at a situation objec-
tively and make the appropriate decisions. If circumstances are
like the first table I played at, walk away. It's as simple as that. If
things are going south, more than likely they will continue in
that direction.
One thing I have learned in all my years of playing is that black-
jack is a very streaky game. I have seen both extremes. I have
seen players lose twenty hands in a row and keep playing
thinking that things would change....they didn't. I have also
played when the dealer could not make a hand. Three other
players and myself emptied the entire dealer chip tray of all of
the red, green, and black chips in a matter of two hours. The
only chips left were the purple chips. So, it can go both ways.
Remember hunches and gut feelings have no place in the game
of blackjack. Prayer does not work in blackjack. You must rely
on skill.
Being able to recognize a losing situation immediately will save
you a lot of money in the long run. Use my four hand rule; any-
time you lose four hands in a row, switch tables. After all, it's
easier to end up with a winning session if you only have to
make up a little rather than a large amount if you started your
day with a loss. Don't get caught up in the moment and, in the
heat of battle, lose all your money. Save your bankroll and just
walk away. Look for a better situation. $
Writer TJ Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over
20 years. He is well known for his tournament play and has beaten
some of the top tournament players in the world. He has also won
the World Series Of Blackjack. His book, “Beating The Casino At
Their Own Game” is available by email at: [email protected].
recently sat down to play some blackjack at one of our local
casinos last week. At the table I selected, the dealer had just
finished shuffling which is very important to me since I
need to see every card from the beginning of the shoe. The first
hand was dealt and I received an eleven against the dealer up
card of a six, so I doubled down and caught a two. The dealer
then proceeded to make twenty one. My next hand was a
twelve against a dealer ten, I hit and caught a ten busting the
hand. My third hand was a ten against a dealer six, I doubled
and caught a three, the dealer then made another twenty one.
The chances of a player losing three hands in a row is only 14%,
so this is never a good start. My fourth hand was an eighteen
that was beaten by a dealer twenty.
At this point I left the table for several reasons. First of all, my
running count was now negative seven, and with one deck
dealt in a six deck game it gave me a true count of over negative
one. You will cut your losses in half by not playing in a negative
count of -1 or greater. Second, if you lose four hands in a row
you will save yourself a lot of money in the long run by switch-
ing tables. When the cards are running like this, it is best to
leave the situation and find a better one. The other three players
at my table continued playing and were digging in their pockets
for more money as I excused myself. I watched for a while as
these players lost at least $100 each. You can be the very best
player in the world and lose in situations like this, so being able
to recognize the appropriate time to walk away can save you
hundreds of dollars.
I wandered around the casino and found another table with just
one player. This time, on my very first hand, I caught a black-
jack. On my second hand, I had a sixteen against a dealer up
card of a ten. I then hit and caught a five for a perfect twenty
one. My third hand was a pair of aces which I split and then
caught tens on both. I won the first twelve hands in a row, mak-
ing back what I lost at the other table and another $150 on top of
that. My point is that by leaving a losing situation I found a
table on the other side of the casino that had a completely oppo-
site flow of cards. I played for about one hour and left over $600
ahead. As I was leaving the casino, I walked by my original
table and the same three players were still digging in their pock-
ets! Who knows how much they were down at this point!
It is amazing to me how many players will go down with a
sinking ship, throwing more money at the money they have
already lost. Maybe it's ego that makes a player continue to play

WINNING WAYS By Mark Novak
WANT TO WIN MORE OFTEN? Play Higher Denomination Slots!
tay away from the penny slots and start playing the dol-
lar slots if you want to increase your chances of winning.
Generally, the higher the denomination is the higher the
payback percentage. Casinos do this to reward players that are
willing to place higher bets. Based on our team’s industry expe-
rience, this is a common breakdown of pay-back percentages for
slots by denomination: 1¢ 85-91%, 2¢ 87-91%, 5¢ 88-92%, 10¢ 89-
93%, 25¢ 92-95%, $1 93-96%, $2 94-96%, and $5 95-97%.
And, here’s another hint: If you generally play a 30 line penny
game at bet-per-line five for a total bet of $1.50, this is the same
as playing a 30 line nickel game at bet-per-line one for the same
wager! Playing the exact same slot game in a higher denomina-
tion can earn you a few extra percentage points! Try it and see if
you can feel a difference. The other added advantage you’ll be
getting by playing the higher denomination games is a boost in

your player’s card status.
And, did you know that the Arizona
casinos have some of the best payback
percentages? If you’ve ever played
your favorite slot machines outside of
Arizona and felt as though something
was off, it probably wasn’t your imagi-
nation! According to the gaming regu-
lations established in Nevada, slot
machine paybacks can be set as low as
75% and this includes Laughlin as
well! California doesn’t even have a
minimum! Here in Arizona, gaming
regulations don’t allow anything below 80% for slot machines!

and ETG manufacturer Interblock is driving that innovation
train.
Interblock is a worldwide leading developer and supplier of
luxury electronic table gaming products. They manufacture
ETGs, in automated, video and dealer assist format, and they
make them well. In fact, Interblock is the only ETG provider
solely focused on ETGs. From the quality of the hardware to the
cutting-edge technology in the software, Interblock machines

Stadiums create a fantastic focal point on any casino floor and
provide both a social and private experience for new and expe-
rienced players alike. For new players who have never played
table games or are intimated to try them, the Stadium has be-
come a great conduit to table games. It provides a low-stress
environment to learn or play table games without the intimida-
tion from other more experienced players and provides lower
limits to create a less expensive introduction to table games.
The Stadium also allows for a faster speed of play not only be-
cause the betting clock is fixed, but also because guests do not
need to wait for the dealer to count chips and award winnings.
Blake Katsnelson, Director of Casino Marketing at Gila River
Hotels and Casinos said, “ETG Stadium environments are the
perfect game to target the Millennial demographic. With this
new game, they are able to practice in the Stadium until they
learn the rules of the game and become comfortable enough to
play on one of our live tables.”
What’s more, each individual play station allows guests to man-
age their bankroll and betting electronically – providing excel-
lent privacy for guests. Play stations also offer a help and rules
menu that provides instructions on how to play each table game
and side bet as well as pay out information – it is all accessible
from any seat within the Stadium!
Within the Vee Quiva and Lone Butte Interblock Stadium, play-
ers can enjoy electronic versions of their favorite table games
such as Roulette, Multi-hand Blackjack and Craps. Roulette and
Craps games are automated, while Multi-hand Blackjack and
Baccarat are video versions.
Richard Strafella, Chief Operating Officer at GRGE said,
“Arizona hasn't seen anything like this! The Interblock Stadium
provides multiple game choices on one monitor. If you're play-
ing Roulette and a player next to you is on a roll at dice, just
switch your game and you can be part of the action!”

Interblock’s patented Multi-hand Blackjack game brings even
more excitement to the Stadium. Multi-hand Blackjack offers
players the ability to wager on up to three hands against the
dealer. For all participating players, six cards are dealt face up
as the initial cards of their three hands. The dealer receives two
cards, one face up as in traditional Blackjack. These cards, as
well as any dealer draw cards, will be common cards in the
dealer’s hand for all players.
Players can even hit, stand or double down on any hand in any
order they prefer. Wins and losses are determined by each play-
er’s decision. In addition, a strategy card for Blackjack is availa-
ble right at the players’ fingertips for their convenience.
The Wild Horse Pass Stadium, the latest addition in the wave of

nos, features Roulette, Multi-
hand Blackjack, Craps and
exclusively offers Baccarat.
Richard Strafella said, “In the
center of all the action at
Wild Horse Pass comes a 30-
seat Stadium arena that fea-
tures not just one but four
electronic table games from
Multi-hand Blackjack to Bac-
carat and Roulette to Craps.
The action is nonstop!”
Although Baccarat can seem
confusing and intimidating,
it is both simple and one of
the easiest card games to
learn, especially within the
Stadium environment. All the player must do is bet on three
possible outcomes: a player win, a banker win and a tie. The
dealer does the rest of the work in this game. After the wagers
are placed, the cards are dealt. Cards two through nine are
worth face value. A ten, jack, queen and king cards have a value
of zero and an ace is worth one.
Two cards for the player and banker are then dealt face up and
whichever hand totals closest to nine wins. If the player bet on
the player hand and the hand is closest to nine, winnings are
doubled. If the player bet on the banker hand and the banker
hand wins, the hand pays 95 percent of the wager.
If the cards dealt are greater than nine the two cards are added,
then the first digit is dropped to get the value. For example, if
the hand shows an eight and a nine card, the total of both cards
is 17. The first digit is dropped for a total value of seven.
If this seems like a lot of math, you are in luck. The player
screen does the math and the total value of each hand is visible
above the cards allowing the guest to focus on winning.
Gregg Levine, Account Executive at Interblock said, “We can
feel the momentum and evolution of gaming in the industry
and we are proud to be the leading ETG manufacturer of Stadi-
um gaming technology. We look forward to providing Gila Riv-
er Hotels & Casinos with even more innovations in the future to
bring more excitement and gaming options to its Stadiums.”
ETGs such as the Stadium have become the place where all the
different segments of gaming come together. For more infor-

rizona Lottery players will have a new way to win big
this spring as the Arizona Lottery introduces a new
family of instant games called Fast Play.
With the addition of Fast Play, players won’t have to choose
between their two favorite game categories anymore. Fast Play
combines the simplicity of playing jackpot games with the in-
stant gratification of Scratchers tickets. This new style of play has
something to offer for every type of player. Fast Play provides a
variety of individually-themed games at varying price points,
play styles and prize structures.
Players can purchase their Fast Play tickets through lottery ter-
minals and the four games give players a chance to win a cash
prize instantly, independent of any drawing. Price points range
from $1 to $5, making it the perfect game for any budget.
With Fast Play, players have a new and fast way to play and win
with the Arizona Lottery. The new category features four games
for players to choose from; Fast Play Piggy Bank Bucks, Fast Play
Crazy 8s, Fast Play Jackpot Party Progressive and Fast Play Cherry
Twist Progressive.
Alongside high odds of winning, the Fast Play Piggy Bank Bucks
NEW FAMILY OF INSTANT GAMES AZ Lottery Welcomes New Category Of Lottery Games With “Fast Play”
A and Fast Play Crazy 8s games generate a range of numbers to
identify whether a ticket is a winner of one or more instant priz-
es. These two tickets offer a combined $5.6 million prize pool.
Players can purchase Fast Play Piggy Bank Bucks for $1 and Fast
Play Crazy 8s for $5.
Fast Play Jackpot Party Progressive and Fast Play Cherry Twist Pro-
gressive offers players an added way to win with progressive
jackpots. Similar to Piggy Bank Bucks and Crazy 8s, these games
generate play symbols to determine if a ticket is an instant win-
ner of one or more prizes, but players also have the opportunity
to win a jackpot prize.
If the jackpot is not won, the games’ progressive jackpots in-
crease each time a ticket is sold. When a lucky player hits the
progressive jackpot, the jackpot for the next ticket is reset to
either $2,000 or $5,000 depending on the game. Players can pur-
chase Fast Play Jackpot Party Progressive for $2 and Fast Play Cher-

et’s face it, losing can already be infuriating enough, but
having other negative influences can create a really bad
gaming experience. Here are some tips to make your casi-
no visits in 2018 better, happier, and much less frustrating:
#1. Avoid Boredom. Don’t let the game bore you. If you are no
longer having fun, walk away and find a new game or just come
back on a different day. One of the first indicators is when your
eyes start to wander and you become focused on everything
and everyone else except what is happening with the game
you’re playing! Not good, because you’re now more likely to
become influenced by events around you rather than staying
focused on your game.
#2. Keep Smiling. The more you smile, the happier you are in the
moment and throughout life. If something begins to irritate you,
fight back with smiles and laughter.
#3. Don’t Chase. If you find yourself too focused on “winning

back” your bankroll, too focused on not hitting the bonus, too
focused on how everyone else is winning and you’re not, too
focused on how negative your experience is, walk away!
#4. Become a Foreigner. Here’s a trick one of our readers uses
when she’s not feeling social and just wants to concentrate on
her game. If the person next to her wants to socialize and she
doesn’t she smiles, shrugs and says, “No English” in whatever
accent comes to mind. She pretends not to understand English
and she’s left alone. If telling a little fib keeps you focused on
your game and distraction free then just do it! $
