Essential Fashion, Music & Art News

Conscious Body, Conscious EarthEven though Earth Day has already passed, we want to make a habit of living an Earth Life. Here at Aritzia, we want our environmental footprint to be as light as possible. We’re the first to admit that we’re not perfect but being conscious is the first step. Little decisions can add up to make a difference.

Starting immediately, we will begin being even more eco-conscious than we already are. Our stores use low-energy lighting, earth-friendly paint and cleaners as well as wood-free shopping bags. We’re also very proud of our Community line, which uses fibres such as organic cotton, rayon and viscose from bamboo and renewable hemp.

We love the Earth, so now it’s time to treat it the way it deserves to be. Who knows what could happen if we don’t?

Easy on the eyes as well as easy on the Earth - we are trying. How about you?

What’s in store

little moon by wilfredWe’ve given you a little peek here and a little peek there but the time has finally come for us to officially unveil Little Moon by Wilfred in its entirety.

This new seasonal collection is our most luxurious to date and a labour of love from start to finish. Combining gorgeously sensual fabrics, delicate prints and an artisanal approach to design, Little Moon by Wilfred is, in a word, stunning. Named after its inspiration - the print on the vintage piece of fabric discovered in a Parisian flea market - this collection is part of an ongoing series thats name will change as the seasons evolve.

Available at all Aritzia locations.

‘Twas a night of dance, song and laughter through the old church halls of The Chapel on the eastside. Its purpose - to celebrate a new wave of emerging talent from Vancouver’s art scene. HERE IS NOW is a series of independent “pop-up” exhibitions that features the work of contemporary Vancouver artists shown within the unconventional space. Through this non-institutionally

a d m i n i s t e r e d approach we wish to create a movement that focuses on what Is Here Now.

Featured artist this season? S e l f - t a u g h t Graham Landin, who works in a multitude of

unorthodox mediums to compliment the traditional. By creating fun pieces that turn bad vibes into bright colors, he is chasing away the demons through creative affirmations and reminding you that it’s all in your head.

Basically, a good way to check out some awesome work, in a beautiful space - oh, did we mention drinks, dancing and music until after midnight?

Check out http://hereisnow.ca for more upcoming shows.

Winter Kate by Nicole RichieWe know it’s not wintertime anymore - actually, it’s getting closer and closer to summer. Regardless, this is a new line that we just can’t get enough of.

If anyone can be considered the face of the bohemian chic movement it would have to be Nicole Richie. Having already launched a highly desirable accessories line, it was only a matter of time before she would add ready-to-wear to her repetoire. Her debut collection, Winter Kate, perfectly channels her iconic mix of ethereal, vintage-inspired looks with modern, feminine silhouettes.

This collection is perfect for lounging in your apartment, shopping with your friends, or walking along the beach. Winter Kate Meadow Cami in Plume Winter Kate Meadow Cami in Plume

Hot Right Now: Bold Graphic DesignsIt’s hard to stand out from the crowd in places such as New York, Toronto, Vancouver, Seattle, Los Angeles...well, you get it. Cities well known for their sartorial experimentation and flair for fashion. Many people try to find the latest offerings from the hottest designers, hoping to follow the trend for a little while and catch a new trend before it catches on. But there’s a better way: why not pick graphic tees that transcend the trends and show of something unique about your personality and fashion sense?

Graphics are a great way to get out of the trend-chasing, designer-focused rat race. Since graphics are not part of the high fashion world, most of the designers focus on actually making things people want to wear (and be seen wearing!) rather than marketing themselves, hosting gigantic gala shows, and the like. This status outside the fashion elite but right in the middle of the mainstream means that graphic tees are almost always calibrated to be genuinely appealing. And since graphics are chosen based on how good they look, not how well they fit the current style, they’re timeless: it’s no accident that so many trends over the last few years have involved resurrecting trends from decades before.

In the end, the best thing about graphics is that they’re so diverse. For any casual, social situation, you can find the graphic shirt that fits it -- to a T.

Girl Crush: Julia Restoin-Roitfeld

Terence bridge jumping, no big deal.

By Terence BonseyBy Tara Miyake

My Girl Crush this month isn’t exactly a NEW crush but given all the gossip surrounding her mother, editor of French Vogue Carine Roitfeld (for getting blacklisted from the Balenciaga show!), it seems fitting to focus on a prettier truth about the fashion heiress...

Is Julia Restoin-Roitfeld beautiful or what!

Julia Restoin-Roitfeld graduated from Parsons Fashion School in New York, works as an Art Director and enjoys front row at all the top fashion shows in New York and Paris each season.

Her sense of style is most visible in her killer outfits which makes her a recurring subject of style photography. To say

that Julia’s beautiful lifestyle, clothes, and New York apartment are inspiring might be a bit of an understatement.

So basically, she is gorgeous, and I wish I could be her. That is all.

How to pull it offLots of times, we’ll have customers telling us they love our pieces but they’re not really sure how to pull it off.

The tough look this week? Cropped tops. Seeing as cropped tees, tanks and knits are as big this Spring as they were in the Fall ... we thought we’d show you a stellar example for some inspiration.

Other ways to wear it? High-waisted anything: skirts, jeans, or even shorts. You can even layer it over long shirts and dresses.

Sometimes, a picture really does speak a thousand words.

The LatestFavorite Photographers By Markie Lock

Cari Wayman is our featured artist for Spring 2010. You probably don’t recognize her name ... Until recently, we didn’t even know what her real name was; she was known to us only as “yyellowbird,” the young and talented Flickr user we stumbled upon last year.

Cari isn’t your average photographer, in fact, she doesn’t even consider herself to be a “photographer” - instead she says that she “takes pictures”. And though this may be an accurate statement, we think Cari is being very humble: her pictures have caught the attention of visual scavengers worldwide and have since been popping up all over the internet - posted on blogs, being flagged on ffffound, and favorited on Flickr.

We are very excited to be the first to take Cari’s work out of the virtual world by working with her as our Spring ‘10 featured artist.

Month of Music: Alicat By Lauren Ma

Alicat is the homegrown cutie from Toronto, lives in London where her main gig is rocking out on the regular as the front girl for her band.

Lauren: What’s the name of your band and what kind of music do you play?Alicat: I sing in a band called Ghostcat. We make a big pop racket.

L: What are you listening to these days?A: Funny enough, only fellow females at the moment…still rocking Gagas ‘The Fame Monster’, loads. Downloaded Amanda Blank’s ‘I Love you’ and Ke$ha’s ‘Animal’.

L: Words to live by?A: I constantly tell myself that “fortune favours the brave”, but consistently adhering to it is another thing altogether! I’ve been known to wuss out but I’m working on it.

Aritzia was born out of Vancouver’s upscale department store, Hill’s of Kerrisdale. Established in 1984, our boutiques are now featured in select cities across the US and Canada.

From Me to YouA letter from your editor

This season, we wanted to do something a little different. We decided to integrate the versatility of music, the unique elements of art, and the everlasting flare of fashion into one solid newsletter, better than ever before.

You’ll notice in this newsletter that every article was written so specifically and in keeping with the tone of Aritzia, while branching out into the other realms of our passions. We listened to what you had to say about our previous newsletters, and we took that to heart: from now on, we will focus our attention on what YOU want! Love, Amanda
