LESSONS IN DESIGN RESEARCHVaulted Terminal | Fall 2013 | Critic: Mara Marcu
This terminal is an extension to the Henri Coanda Airport in Bucharest, Romania. The shape of the airport originates from the Romanian egg patterns taking into a program called Catia. The cell takes the form of vaults that get modulated forming the shape of the terminal.

These Arctic towns lack modern amenities from entertainment to products and services. In particular, the food is often expensive and hard to come by. This project aims to provide the Arctic inhabitants with a brief but memorable experience within this floating commercial city.

In the early 20th century, the temple served as a gathering place, an entertainment place, and an educational place. Now there are shopping malls, schools, and athletic facilities to serve those needs.
Thus, the temple loses importance in its everyday life with urban youth. The design strategy aims to reintegrate Buddhist teachings by spatially integrating elements of Buddhism into the everyday life of the youth.
This can be experienced through the three senses: touch, sight, and hearing. Through the experience of these three spaces, people will appreciate the teachings of Buddhism and will return them to the temple where it all began.

1.3 LIGHT The form of these three spaces is derived from the lotus flower. It is the understood symbol for
Buddhism and temples in Thailand. Sections of the lotus were taken and
elongated along an axis. The stages of the lotus blooming correspond to the
teaching of the particular space.

This project is a felt material exploration centered on the curtain competition at the University of Texas in Austin. Through laser cutting origami patterns and sewing together the folds, the felt becomes less rigid. This project explores, discovers, and pushes the limits of this material.

LESSONS IN FABRICATION TEDxUVA Stage Design | Spring 2014 Partner: Ben Lawson, Ellison Turpin, and Austin Walker
TEDxUVA is one of the independently organized talks inspired by the popular global conference TED talk with the slogan “Ideas Worth Spreading.”
The theme for TEDxUVA 2014 is Make Your Own Path, which is our underlying concept for the stage design. The cells were laser cut and sewn together with 3D printed supports to make it three dimensional.

Components: Each is made of 2 double head arrows and a support bar (exact shape to be determined).
Assembly of each “X”: Once pulled in tension in the larger frame the smaller support bars will slide in and provide the additional dimension to the wall. These support bars will be stitched in place as needed.
Components: 28 “X”s made of stretchy fabric, pipes to support each panel (exact diame-ter to be determined), thread, 28 support bars
Assembly of panel: Each X will be stictched together at the points and pulled in tension with the use of the larger frame.
