Oct 20. Full Day Soweto and Apartheid Museum B/L

Today you will be collected for your full day tour of Soweto, the largest town-ship in Southern Africa. (Soweto is an acronym for South West Township). Ex-perience the excitement and goodwill of the inhabitants of Soweto as they work towards creating a better South Africa; enjoy the sights and sounds of the typical African township. We visit the site of the June 16 1976 massacre that gave birth to the rise of the anti-apartheid era that would eventually see the downfall of the oppressive government regime of the apartheid (segregation) era. Our tour includes a visit to the Hector Pieterson Museum, a monument to a schoolboy shot by the police in 1976 and the only street which was once home to two No-bel Peace Prize winners, Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu. Entrance to Nelson Mandela House is included. Apartheid was dismantled more than a decade ago, but its full horror lives on, in a stark white building in Johannesburg. You will be taken on a fascinating, horrifying, humbling and ultimately inspiring journey from the dark days of ‘whites only’ privilege, through to Nelson Mandela’s historic release from pris-on. Documentary pieces of film, texts, sound clips and live accounts recapture life in the old South Africa. It’s a journey you’re unlikely to forget in a hurry.Lunch will be included at Sakhumzi’s Restaurant. Return to your hotel – evening at leisure.
